Mobsters who never served a prison sentence - 08/08/15 11:41 PM

I believe Carlo Gambino never did a prison stretch, neither did Tommy if I remember correctly.

I also believe but am open to correction that Santo Trafficante Sr never served a prison sentence. The son Santo Jr spent time incarcerated in Cuba but I don't think he ever did time in the US. I believe the one conviction he had in Florida was overturned on appeal before he had to turn himself in.

Just to clarify I mean a person getting convicted and sentenced to a prison term, not people spending days in jail awaiting trial etc.

Tommy got five years on the '93 case. He went in around '95 or '96 and I think he did the full Federal ride. Meaning he probably came home around the year 2000.

Gambino did about 20 or 22 months in all, as I read in a New York Times archive, but it wasn't explained whether it was all preventive custody or short sentences combined.

Isn't one of Tony Accardo's claims to fame was never doing any time?

He did most of the time, Dwalin. But he kept appealing and appealing, so he didn't go in until around '96. And he went straight to Allenwood, which is the Cadillac of wiseguy Federal prisons. Very easy time.

Accardo never did any time. He may have spent the night on one or two occasions but he never spent any significant amount behind bars.

Big Paul did a short stint in his youth for robbery.

Accardo never even spent a night in jail. According to Bill Roemer, the time he was arrested for income tax evasion they woke up the judge in the middle of the night to set bail for him.

I'm sure plenty of the guys way back then didn't do prison time. The cops didn't even know who many of them were.

Al Tornabene didn't even have a criminal record. Most people didn't even know he existed until the Family Secrets Trial

Torrio served a little less than a year for illegal alcohol in the 20s (did even turn himself in earlier than he was supposed to because Moran's gang was out to get him), and a couple of years for taxt evasion in the 30s.
