The foolish media and 80s NYC construction - 07/29/15 02:47 AM

Now that Donald Trump is running for president, he will undoubtedly be asked about his "mob" connections. This is stupid because you literally had to deal with the mob in one form or another when building in NYC in the 1980s when he created his empire. So I guess everybody who built real estate in NYC in the 80s is now "connected"...

And people will see this as "oh, trump is shady because he deals with the mob" ...well you kind of had to. I mean, did he really have a choice? Probably not.

I just read some bullshit article accusing Trump of being connected because he did "business" with the mob...An article from "the federalist" it has already begun. No, Donald Trump is not a mafia associate.

And that's not to mention that his father, Fred Trump, was one of the biggest affordable housing builders in the history of the 20th Century. He died worth 300 million. But if he had his son's media savvy and desire for more, he would have easily been a billionaire (no small feat back then).

Not to mention that when Donald went belly up in the late '80s/early '90s, his father ingeniously bought in for four million in chips at one of his son's casinos and handed the chips right over to Donald. Shady? Yes. Legal? Also yes.

@Extortion: A fair analogy to your point would be entertainers playing at places like the Copa or out in Vegas back in the day. You couldn't play without brushing up against some mob guys. It just wasn't possible.

Anyone planning on voting for Trump?

There have already been several articles bringing up Fat Tonys company doing the work on the Trump Plaza and him being "mobbed up."

To answer HandsomeStevie, it remains to be seen if Trumps popularity in the polls lasts but I would vote for him over Hillary in a heartbeat.

Character?
Donald trump is a moral and ethical void.
To say otherwise is factually not true.
EG On Sen John McCain

Business acumen?
Trump was left 300 million dollars to invest in Manhatten real estate in the late 1970's, early 80's. If youre not a billionaire now, there's something wrong with you.

Though to say that anybody could do it is not true. Most people could do it without going bankrupt FOUR times.

Greatest 'jobs' president? Donald trumps signiture line of clothing...is made in China.
So he would be a great jobs president. For the Chinese.

Foreign Policy?

DT: "I dont like foreign policy. It irratates me because it changes all the time."

Imagine Trump as President dealing with Foreign affairs.
Seriously.
Do it.

Rome would burn gentlemen.

But hey, Vote Trump!

Would never vote for him but the main positive for Trump IMO is he talks about subjects that most candidates wouldn't touch , but they might have to now

@Sonny

That's why I mentioned Fred Trump and how he bailed Donald out, one time with four million in casino chips, which is a nice no interest loan to Donald and a gambling write-off for Fred.

Point being, with all of his media exposure, he'd have you believe that he's self made, which is pure bullshit. The mob aspect doesn't even come into play, it's just the way things were back then.

I wouldn't vote for Trump or Clinton. And if that's the choice I''m left with, I'm moving to Australia to haunt Sonny on a daily basis. But call me a cockeyed optimist, I don't see either one of them on their respective tickets.

Crazy wins primaries and moderate wins elections. There's always some eccentric type gaining momentum in these early stages. Let's see what happens in the upcoming months. As for the mob stuff, hillbilly types might buy into it, but anyone who knows how construction happened back then will write that bullshit off.

End of the day they're all the same. The system itself never changes, the candidates 'do'.
Its all a moot exercise end of the day..

And by the time said candidates are part of the system, they've already been corrupted. I'm apolitical at this point in my life. I hate them all.

Hey, you better at least visit me asshole. I have *reaches in pocket* $0.25 AUD in royalties. It's a [BadWord] to post. grin

Really, I literally had to do a double take when I learned Trump was running. He's been saying it for so long, I simply didn't believe it. If Trump is voted in, I'd lose all faith i-...well, Australia voted in Abbot, so I'd STFU.
Of course any type of mud-raking is applicable in a political campaign.
