DeCavalcante Crime Family: 1970-1990? - 01/20/15 09:11 PM

Is there any information on this family in that 20 year period. Stories, etc? It seems to be very void imo.

Yeah, wasn't John Riggi the boss at the time? Most info you can find on them is about Ralph Gaurino and the WTC heist, Vinny Ocean and the hit Gotti ordered and some other crap. Oh and don't forget that damn wiretap where they're discussing The Sopranos.. every, fucking, time!

A good read about Jersey, the author compares the Sopranos with the mobsters they were based on.

Sclafani and other members of his Borgata were also taped discussing The Sopranos, which they believed was about them (to an extent it was; David Chase likely based some characters and story lines on people and incidents that were reported to have really happened in the small New Jersey-homegrown family.)

Four members were secretly taped by the feds in the winter of 1999 as they were driving to a mob sit-down. As reported by Jerry Capeci in his online column ganglandnews.com, the men's conversation eventually turned to The Sopranos.

"Hey, what's this fucking thing, Sopranos?" soldier Sclafani asked. "What the fuck are they... Is this supposed to be us?"

"You are in there," capo Anthony Rotondo replied. "They mentioned your name in there." Apparently Rotondo was a big fan. [Not likely; it is highly doubtful the show was specifically referring to Tin Ear, though the name "Sclafani" may have been spoken.]

"Yeah? What did they say?" Sclafani asked.

A third wiseguy identified in the FBI transcripts only as "Billy" answered. "Watch out for that guy, they said. Watch that guy." Billy was apparently joking because the fourth man in the car started laughing. He was the one wearing the concealed wire.

"Every show you watch, more and more you pick up somebody. Every show," Rotondo said.

"Yeah, but it's not me," Sclafani said. "I'm not even existing over there."

Chase confirmed that The Soprano's are more based on the Boiardo crew than the DeCalvacante family. Seems a lot more reasonable when you actually compare the characters with the real men.

Yes I heard that the Boiardos were who the sopranos characters were based upon.

The 1970's were the beginning of the war, what war? I know next to nothing about the Decavalcante's. According to Jr. he moved out of Jersey at the request of his father to ensure his protection. From who? From what?

Makes me wanna read In the Godfather's Garden since I never started it. I know almost nothing about Richie's crew... anybody knows specifically which character is based on who?

I just can't seem to get through that book which I've been reading off and on for a year now. It's slightly boring but filled with great info about what went on during prohibition and when the mob was in its hey day and then some. Good maybe you can post a summary so I don't have to finish it. lol

Ok sounds good. It's a book that you need to read and then take notes. There are too many names and ranks to remember. I enjoyed the chapter on The Longy War. Read that chapter it's really interesting.

You know what was interesting...says that it was Boiardo who was the one to take over the Augie-Yale gang after Yale was clipped.

I'm trying to figure out how this could be. Every source states that Yale's men and territory were split between Profaci and Masseria. There's no mention of Boiardo.

Can anyone elaborate on what this paragraph is trying to say?
I want to know how Acceturo and Tacetta fit into Bruno murder?
How did they exploit?

It was on Wiki: (I know wiki is bad for facts but they are right most of the time I think)

Here is post:
On March 12, 1980, the boss of the Philadelphia crime family Angelo "Gentle Don" Bruno was shot to death, in the aftermath of which the double dealing Funzi Tieri of the Genovese LCN had "The Commission" support the murder of all those involved in the Bruno murder (though they had been encouraged to do the same by Tieri). After this, Philip Testa found himself boss, but was killed by his underboss Pete Casella. Consigliere Nicodemo Scarfo, then fighting the remnants of the Casella faction to maintain control of the Philadelphia family. When Accetturo heard of this, he ordered Taccetta to establish a new crew of the Lucchese crime family, under Taccetta's control. Because of the bad relations between the two factions in Philadelphia's crime family, and Taccetta and Accetturo exploiting the situation, the relationship between Philadelphia and the Five Families worsened.

New Jersey actually has 7 families operating within its borders. All 5 NY families, the DeCavalcantes, and Philly has both South Jersey and Newark area based crews.

I'm going to try to figure this out...

Tony Soprano is based on Tony Boy Boiardo. Richie The Boot's kid. Not only are their backgrounds and names similar, both guys being named Tony and being the kids of well respected Mafiosi. But Tony Boy is said to have saw a psychiatrist during his day as a mob figure, it's said he had some agita. It led to other health problems and he died unexpectedly of a heart attack in like '78 I think.

Big Pussy is based on Anthony "Little Pussy" Russo, younger brother to John "Big Pussy" Russo. While the fictional Big Pussy was killed for being an informant, Little Pussy was killed most believe for being too talkative, and for "The Barn" wiretaps. Both were murdered by their former friends.

Don't know about any other characters, but Chase admits that he based the show on his experiences growing up in Jersey during the 60's, and says these guys were his inspiration behind the Sopranos and various police reports from the time gave birth to most of the action in the Soprano's.

Never heard of the Boiardo's. Remember Vito though? The DC family wacked one of their members on suspicions of being a homo as well. I'm sure it's not only solely based on the Boiardo's...

Re: DeCavalcante Crime Family: 1970-1990? - 01/27/15 01:41 AM

It isn't totally based on their lives and all their actions, but in terms of the inspiration behind the Soprano's, factually it's Boiardo's not the DeCalvacante's. If we're going by Chase himself.
