John Gotti beaten up in prison
John Gotti was beaten up by a black inmate named Walter Johnson while in Marion Federal Prison in Marion, IL. Classified as a supermax facility designed to house the most dangerous offenders, Marion is the place for the worst of the worst. Gotti's housing area in the prison housed 20 inmates (10 upstairs and 10 downstairs) and all of the inmates in this housing area lived in one man cells. The inmates were on 23 hour a day lockdown and the only time the other inmates saw Gotti during the day is when he came out for his 1 hour of free time, with 4 other inmates, who were allowed to watch the TV in the recreation area or call their loved ones by phone. The fight was over a TV. Gotti basically controlled the TV and housing area. Gotti asked Johnson to change the channel on the TV, but Johnson refused, so Gotti called him a racial slur and they both got into each others faces. At that point Gotti punched him and Johnson grabbed him and slammed his head against a wall, then punched Gotti multiple times until Gotti hit the floor. The prison staff moved Johnson to another housing area for a month and then to another prison for his safety. Gotti paid the Aryan Brotherhood to murder the inmate, but the hit never happened. In prison, the prison gangs run the show and sometimes mobsters pay them for protection. In East Coast prisons they mostly pay the Aryan Brotherhood, same in prisons that are in the south or mid west. On the west coast they mostly pay La Eme or Nuestra Familia, which are both dangerous Chicano organized crime groups that were started as just prison gangs.
