Who were Trafficante Jr's bulldogs? - 11/30/14 01:50 PM

There is a list a mile long of NY guys for each of the 5 families. There are books written about many of them but, I always read about how powerful Santo was but, don't know 1 feared capo or soldier who was under him?

No Florida legends?
Why is that?

It's the same thing with New Orleans. Few people out of the area can name influential capos or soldiers and only know the head names like Marcello and Trafficante.

Personally I believe NY and Chicago gets so much attention because they were more involved in a wider spread of things accompanied with the amount of people involved. You have guys getting into altercations from different factions and families where as New Orleans and Tampa were smaller and unified. You throw in another family or two in our two smaller cities and there would have been more names mentioned when paths were crossed.

We have to take into account that both families probably had no more than 40-50 made guys at it's peak, if that. These guys were probably a lot closer with blood ties and detailed planning than say a family with 200-300 made guys where not everyone is familiar with each other.

Like I said from the variety of rackets aside from illicit gambling and narcotics importation that was very big on the gulf coast, the union infiltration is virtually non existent in Louisiana. To my knowledge there is no huge garment industry or Fish market in Louisiana to send guys to get your hooks into.

Bid rigging for certain projects wasn't uncommon, but given how the south was I think it was more of Marcello himself using the politicians to say "hey help this guy out with this contract". I assume it was the same with Trafficante.

Here in the South you have to realize things are different. You have more cops, etc. on the take, crap even judges were on the take here more commonly than up in NYC and other big cities because it is easier to corrupt small towns with big bucks. Things are done in the open more, but you are also dealing with small families to begin with and with hardly any media attention compared to places like NYC.

Like LaLou said when you add all this into a very small family the names will not be as common as the gangsters were in NYC.

Both the NO and Tampa Families were very small. But both Mafia groups had a pretty large group of non Italians as associates. Trafficante for example, had plenty of Cubans working for him and kicking up. I´m sure ScottD can provide further info on this.

In 1967, the FBI listed following names as members of the NO Family (some of these were considered suspected members):

CARLOS MARCELLO (boss)
JOSEPH MARCELLO (underboss)
VINCENZO CAMPO (consigliere)
CHRIS ALBANO
SALVADOR ANTHONY BOEMIA
ANGELO BENJAMIN CONFORTO
JEROME JOSEPH CONFORTO
ANTHONY S CAROLLO
SAM SALVADORE DI PIAZZO
FELICE GOLINO
GUISEPPE GAGLIANO (an uncle of Fat Dom Alongi of NY)
JOSEPH ANTHONY MATASSA
FRANK OCCHIPINTI
ROSARIO FRANK OCCHIPINTI
ONOFIO PECORA also known as NOFIO PECORA
JOSEPH ALBERT PORETTO
MARIO PRESTA
FRANK SAM RUFFINO
VICTOR EMILE SALADINO
FRANK VINCENT TIMPHONY

Tampa Family (some of these were considered suspected members):

SANTO TRAFFICANTE Jr (boss)
ANGELO BEDAMI
CIRO BEDAMI
GUISEPPE BEDAMI
JAMES GUIDO BRUNO
FRANK DIECIDUE
DOMINICK FURCI
AUGUSTINE PRIMO LAZZARA
JAMES COSTA LONGO
SALVATORE JOSEPH LORENZO
NICK SCAGLIONE
HENRY TRAFFICANTE
SALVATORE CACCIATORE TRAFFICANTE

Marcello may have had members based in Dallas too. And Trafficante may have had members based in Miami too.

If this is the right Documentary, then they should mention some of Santo's hitmen back when he raged war on Charlie Waltz, and when the family was hit with a rash of indictments they pretty much killed off every loose end. There isn't much about this written on Wikpedia, they mostly focus on the Castro and Kennedy murder attempts.

That is what I assumed IS, Trafficante's power came from huge political connections and tons of corruption.

Gotta read my books to find out!

Some of the big names under Trafficante were his longtime underboss Frank "Daddy Frank" Diecidue, Salvatore Scaglione, Primo Lazzara, Jimmy Longo (Santo Jr.'s bodyguard), Vincent LoScalzo (alleged successor).

Back further guys like Ralph Reina, Sal Italiano, Jimmy Lumia ,and the Anitnoris were big powers.
