Interesting, Gary. Thanks for posting. I'd like to hear what our friends in Boston have to say about this book.

Which one of the 2 is better in your opinion?

I don't usually read the books that take place outside of New York. But I think I'll give this one a shot.

What an asshole. If you do what they tell you to do and stay in whatever jerkwater town they stick you in you'll be fine. But this moron went looking to make friends with guys from Southie, and it got him killed. Stupid bastard.

Barboza could not leave that life. That was is undoing. Had he just followed the witness protection program, he would still be alive. I heard Aladena Frattiano tipped off the Boston guy, but Barboza became friends with an associate of Vito Bruno, who then started to ask around about this guy who no one knows about. I heard that the contract was going to be given to Vince "Barrise" Barrisa, but in the end the guys from Boston did Joe in.

He went looking to make friends with guys from Southie? Where did you come up with that? Joe ran with Buddy Mclean, the man who started Winter Hill. Joe didnt have friends in Southie, he knew who the criminals were in Southie, but never ran with them. He had his own crew of guys from Eastie and during the gang war worked with the Somerville side and killed a bunch of men for Buddy. And he got killed cause he threatened Partriarca and decided to rat and they found him and did away with him. Didnt have anything to do with trying to make friends with Southie guys. This was during the 60s and at that time Southie had its own gang wars going on and they had nothing to do with the big Irish gang war, or the other factions around Boston. Southie didnt get invloved until Howie Winter, Joe Russo, Whitey Bulger and Pat Nee had a sitdown and came to an agreement that Southie would join together with the Hill and that goes with the saying, Whitey ran South Boston and Howie ran Whitey. Joe Barboza was not even a factor during this and it was also after Buddy died. Buddy and Joe had a strong connection cause Buddy was an Irishman, but raised by a Portuguese family. He would have done anything Buddy asked. Thats just a false statement, wondering where you got that from.

I'm a Bronx Italian American guy, buddy. I don't pretend to know anything about the Boston Irish. If I got the Southie part wrong, I got it wrong. But he was still looking to hook up with Boston based guys after he went into the program, and that did him in. Am I wrong about that?

I know I read somewhere that he hooked up with that Chalmas guy and it didn't do him any favors. My point was, if he stayed away from those guys the Patriarcas never would have found him. That's all.

Re: New Book About Mob Killer / Informer - 07/27/14 04:23 PM

In my opinion it was an idiotic move from the "headlines" point of view when he framed Tameleo, Limone and others when he could have testified that Patriarca sanctioned the hit, which was true. He wouldn't even have had to lie on the stand. Putting Patriarca (boss) in jail for life would have made bigger headlines than putting Tameleo (underboss) in jail.
What a stupid irony by the way, Tameleo would have died in jail anyway if he got what he deserved for the Marfeo/Melei hit. Instead, he got only 3 or 5 years for what he really did and a life sentence for what he didn't do.

The only guys he was looking to hook up with, were members of his old crew from Eastie. The guy that set him to be killed was a rat too. Barboza was already drawing heat from the feds and other criminals for killing a man while San Fran. Your right tho if he just stayed in the program and kept his mouth shut, they most likely would have never got to him.

Agreed. That was honestly the only point I was trying to make.

Boston was so fucking polluted with corrupt feds, politicians, other law enforcement, it was a joke. That bastard fed Rico dictated the terms to the Deegan murder, he knew the whole time who really did it, but set up the Italians, which was garbage. Some say the Italians had evidence of Rico and Hoover and the other pickles in the FBI who liked to play with eachother and would blackmail the shit out of him. So Rico had a personal grudge and wanted to take down all the LCN members he could. He set up a few guys for Winter Hill to kill during the Irish gang war also. He was a true piece of shit, fucking scumbag. He loved Buddy Mclean, and it was probably cause he wanted a piece of Buddys hollywood looks

Really interesting thread. I just finished reading "My Life in the Mafia" by Vincent Teresa which features Barboza a good deal.
