differences between 'Ndrangheta, and Camorra? - 06/07/14 11:46 AM

Can someone tell me the differences between the 'Ndrangheta, and Camorra?

Do they work closely together, both with each other and the Sicilians?

Are there any good books about both the 'Ndrangheta and Camorra?

Obviously there are regional differences: 'Ndrangheta are Calabrians, Camorra are Neapolitans. Huge differences also in clannishness. Ndrangheta groups are primarily composed of people related by blood and/or marriage. Camorra on the other hand has more of a gang-like structure and is less clannish.

Thanks for the information. How long have both been around for? Centuries?

Yeah, the Camorra has been called the most "porous" of the Italian syndicates. Probably why it's also the most violent and unstable.

The author John Dickie is you're man for information on the three main Italian groups. I think he states that Cosa Nostra and the Camorra emerged out of the prison system in the 1860s and the Ndrangehta in the 1880s. All though all three claim to have been around for much longer.

Definitely the most violent. The Sicilians have historically had prolonged violent power struggles and Ndrangheta clans have their feuds from time to time, but gang wars between Camorra groups seem to be neverending.

Did people who were involved with the 'Ndrangheta, and Camorra in Italy set stuff like that up in the United States when they emigrated here in the 1800s?

Or is that what the "black hand" was along with the first Sicilian mafia in the United States?

Thanks for the author recommendation.

the first written document about the existence of the sicilian mafia was in 1838 when south italy was under bourbouns... the camorra emerged in 1820 and it was called 'bella società riformata', the 'ndrangheta emerged a bit later in 1880s

I know wikipedia is not always relilable or factual but I did find this.

Anyone know which PA mining towns they are? That's a rather vague statement as there are mining towns up north by Scranton, and out west by PGH.

What is Naples Italy like? I have heard different things about it, and they are conflicting.

A former roommate of mine who does not really enjoy large cities said that it's large, very dirty, and something not nice about it. He said that for an American or person who is not Italian going Naples is akin to someone that's Italian or not American going to Detroit, North Philadelphia/Camden NJ, or the most dangerous parts of NYC. He also is Italian and said that most people if or when they can leave Naples.

Another friend of mine who has a heritage from Naples said that the city is large and it's beautiful there. She also said like any large city there are good places and bad places.

OK why do they hate people from other provinces or areas in the South of Italy that you mentioned like Calabria and Sicily?

Do Northern Italians dislike people from Basilicata and Puglia too?

I have a friend that is part Southern Italian, and she said when she, and her family including her Italian father who was from Naples went to central or Northern Italy it was no big deal at all that she and her father were Southern Italian. Nobody thought her father did not speak Italian correctly. But her father was born in Naples and then his parents moved to NYC, and then he moved to another country where his wife was from.
