Boston Armored Car/ Bank Crews - 04/19/14 07:10 AM

Was wondering if there are any other places like Charlestown around the country that have crews that are dedicated to hitting banks and trucks? Also how accurate was the movie "The Town"?

FBI Agents Raid West Philly Home Believed To Be Involved In Armored Car Heist

By Jan Carabeo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Sources tell CBS3 that authorities know who they’re looking for.

They’ve been watching these men since the Halloween heist at the Wells Fargo Bank.

So, when this latest robbery happened here at the TD Bank, law enforcement started to revisit locations associated with the suspects including one spot in West Philadelphia.

Only CBS3 cameras were rolling during a late-morning raid in West Philadelphia.

The dramatic scene unfolded on the corner of 42nd and Pennsgrove Streets.

Once police and FBI made their way in and searched, they eventually came out carrying bags of evidence.

Sources say this was the spot where those armored car robbers split up the money after their brazen heist at the Mayfair TD Bank. (See Previous Story)

Janet Cleary of Mayfair says, “People are desperate. It’s a shame they have to rob banks, but people are desperate.”

Today, there is a clearer picture of what happened.

After ditching this first getaway vehicle on Tackawanna Street, sources say investigators found the second vehicle yesterday at the West Philadelphia location.

As that white Cadillac escalade left, law enforcement followed, but lost it before the expressway.

Police ran the plates, which led them to a car dealership.

Turns out, one suspect didn’t own this escalade. He told the dealership that he’d pay today when he had the funds.

The dealership installed a GPS just in case and that’s how police tracked the SUV to the Henry Avenue apartments in Roxborough.

Authorities searched the car and a third story apartment, where sources say they found a bag of cash.

But today, TD Bank got back to business with a routine exchange, just 24 hours after the chaos that’s left this community on edge.

The suspects are still on the run. Also today, investigators took a woman in for questioning. It’s unclear if she’s a witness or if she was somehow involved in the heist.

Was the armoured car robbery that happen in the movie Heat really happen?

There was a armoured car that was robbed in NYC over 40 yrs ago. It happen at a new shopping center that had just opened. The truck drove up to a loading dock and collected money from their stores and the banks that were there.

When they got back to the loading dock they were robbed.they got away clean.

Now the armoured truck waits on the street and not on the, loading dock ramp.

I think the characters in The Town were portrayed realistically along with the culture. There definitely was a flower shop in Charlestown that fronted for various activity in real life. And there was definitely a culture where bank robbery was a legitimate career option. I don't think there was a guy actually from Ireland that was in charge though. The real life crews were legit hard guys and definitely did a lot of planning for some of the jobs.

But robbing Fenway Park in broad daylight? All Hollywood. And nobody started dating the bank teller after they robbed her either.

there are better articles but this was with a quick search. Joe was a good friend of my dad and uncle and he was a neighborhood legend. (Knickerbocker Village Lower East Side) The money was never recovered and Joe did some time but got out and was able to enjoy life a little before he died. My uncle once said that "Joe, now he was tough". Coming from my uncle that meant he was bona fide.

Re: Boston Armored Car/ Bank Crews - 05/14/14 03:34 PM

picture has me shook

I missed/avoided being in a bank that was robbed by about 3 hours one day. What surprised me was that I remember the bank guard STARING at me as though I was banging his wife the entire time I was there. I couldn't believe that bank robbers would be able to get the drop on a security guy who was so "alert" . They turned out to be white guys...Eastern european sounding names in article when suspects were caught. Guess the guard wasn't actually that alert, just eyeballing Black guys.

Wouldn't have been shocked if the bank robbers cased the joint...and sent a Black buddy in there 3 minutes before they walked in to distract the guard.

Re: Boston Armored Car/ Bank Crews - 05/15/14 05:37 PM

lmao!! getthesenets, do you happen to have the article that shows where they caught the guys? it almost makes sense that they would be eastern European. it's a harsh life in parts of Europe... in the bigger cities like New York and LA it's hard not to feel a quiet sense of dread when you see a business being taken over by the eastern Europeans... they have a whole different hustle... towing cars for nothing, like in front of somebodies own freakin house... valet theft... you name it loll!!!

Thanks Mike68, although the films credits said based a actual events you have to wonder how much is real and fiction. The attention to detail that some these real life crews put into a heist is amazing.
