In the book Gaspipe one of Casso's proud boasts is that his voice was never recorded. In other words the authorities never managed to get any recorded evidence against him.
I think I'm right in saying Chin was not only never recorded himself, he banned others from even using his name.
Opposite to this of course you have people like John Gotti who recorded more stuff than Bruce Springsteen.
Was it dumb to not pick up that you were going to be subject to recording activities and react accordingly or would they get anyone eventually.
Do mobsters still get recorded? Is it even needed now?
Maybe the cops just find out whats going on from Facebook?

In Gotti's case, once again, his ego overrode his judgement. As far as the Bergen or the Ravenite were concerned,he knew that the Feds probably had devices in place,so he went for "walk-talks" to discuss serious mob business.

After a while,Gotti didn't feel like going outside in the snow and rain,so he came up with the idea of using the upstairs apartment belonging to the widow of one of his soldiers (Mickey Cerilli,I believe).

Gotti wrongly believed that since the old lady wasn't a criminal associate of the Gambinos, the cops could never cite probable cause to bug the place. Also, the woman hardly ever went out ,so Gotti also figured that there would be no opportunity for a bug to be placed.

He honestly believed that he was smarter than the Feds, and as a result, the tapes recorded in that apartment came back to haunt him.

What surprises me is that Big Paulie let himself be recorded in his house. I can't speak for some of the other old school guys who got caught on tape, but this was a guy who was groomed by Carlo Gambino, who basically wrote the book on avoiding wiretaps or bugs.

Why Big Paulie couldn't just step outside and talk to his guys is beyond me.

As long as you have Mob guys who are too lazy, egotistical,or stupid to take basic precautions, you will continue to see cases made by bugs.

Chin was recorded, there was a bug in his mistress's house but I don't believe he ever divulged anything incriminating.

micky 2 the comment about using Facebook was not intended as a serious suggestion that modern gangsters use it to organize their criminal activities. It was a flippant attempt at being light hearted. But thanks for pointing out that it would be dumb if they were to do that I wouldn't have been able to work that out for myself.

Hypothetically yes but I'm sure if you're involved in that sort of thing you would assume that you are being observed, there are wiretaps, and you are being recorded both via phone and in your home or hypothetically an office or place you go regularly.

That is what I'm getting at cornuto, With so many cases having been made are the people involved so savvy that they don't get caught any more.

Plus if people into that sort of thing use the internet, cellphones, email/text, etc. they can hypothetically get charges of using a network for criminal activity on top of other charges.

He also got caught talking with his mistress on a cellphone and that was some of the evidence the prosecutor layed out to proof that he wasn't crazy. He was talking all normally and was giving her kisses and what not trough the phone. I never understood how a guy that went trough all that trouble making himself look crazy could talk that open on a phone and not think that he might get recorded

Yes in college I read about students or people who lived in the area who got caught selling drugs get charged with that since they had used a cellphone either call or texting/email, university computers/university email, or sites like myspace/facebook to communicate with people they thought were legit but were really undercover narcos.
