Zips in Oregon, IL in the 80s - 03/12/14 09:30 PM

Arm,

Were you living in Rockford in the 80's when Pietro Alfano was operating a pizzeria in Oregon,IL? Alfano was Gaetano Badalamenti's nephew. Did Rockford get a cut of that? Did Elmwood Park? How was the relationship between Rockford and the Zips? Thanks.

I remember this very well. This was part of The Pizza Connection case that the feds busted in the mid eighties. They were shipping heroine from Sicily in pizza sauce cans to connected pizza parlors in the states. Nobody could believe what happened in tiny Oregon, Illinois at that time. The small town that I went to high school in had a pizza place owned by the same guys. After the pizzeria was busted in Oregon, the one I went to closed over night. We didn't know why at the time but rumors were flying!

I was living in Upstate NY at the time but I remeber this well...Alfano's operation was 100% Rockford, but the Outfit got a cut becuse it was frankly too big for Rockford to handle alone. This was a small part of a HUGE operation accross the country involving at least 8 families. Utica, which is where I was living, had it's own Pizza connection at the time.
These small towns are now and have always been useful to Rockford. This was a heroin operation hiding in plain sight. Today there is a Rockford suburb in which the majority of the commercial and rental property is owned by one Rockford associate(soon to be made according to some)and there are cash businessses in this twon of 3000 that have bneen washing Rockford and outfit money for years.

A little bit off topic...Belive it or not, some sources say that the Outfit was one of the first crime families that made the narcotics connection with the Italians from EU,way before Luciano or guys like from the Detriot mob.Jim Emery and Dominic Roberto for example, from the Chicago Heights...

I dont really remember when Dominic went(deported?) to Italy but i think it was before Luciano

That's true. It was The Arm's great-grandfather who made the connection. They called him Paco because he looked like one of those San Jose Pueblos. But boy, was he tough as nails.
