Good tool for demographics in certain areas - 10/29/13 09:26 PM

This website has an interesting tool where you can type in a certain city or neighborhood of that city and can see the demographics of that area. You can see the demographics of specific countries (Irish,Polish,Italian,Greek, ect).
Some places that were insteresting-
South Philly have places as high as 85% percent of Italians
Morris Park in the Bronx still has areas over 60% Italian
Woodlawn Bronx and Canaryville Chicago of course have a high percentage of Irish
Bensonhurst still has areas well over 50% Italian.
And nonose, not trying to call you out but the demographics for Bridgeport says 20-40% Italian.
Here is the website http://www.city-data.com/

If Morris Park is still 60 percent Italian, then I'm the King of England. I'm there almost every day and it's not even close to sixty percent. The apartment buildings around Morris Park Avenue, Williamsbridge Road, Boston Road, Bronxdale Avenue, yada yada yada, are majority Latino and Black today. And there are A LOT of buildings in that area.

I'm not picking on you, Nicky. But if they made a mistake that big with an area as easy to read as Morris Park, then the site's credibility has to be questioned all together.

Not overall, it breaks it down to certain areas in Morris Park. Just type in Morris Park and then choose Italian to see.

I've posted this in the past also for demographic use. It is a zoomable block-level map of the city and outlying areas. Color coded. Also, left click on a block for specific numbers.

City data is good.

Same with North Jersey. Looks like many Italians moved from Manhattan/The Bronx to North Jersey, Staten Island, and Long Island.

You are looking at the data for a certain block. For Bridgeport as a whole, it looks to be about 3 percent.

A few of the eastern blocks have upwards of 30 percent, though, and the area around the freeway about 40 percent. So, that is interesting.

Yeah that's what I've always said. Everything east of halsted and west of the Dan Ryan, and starting from Pershing to 26th is mainly Italian. Which is a good chunk of Bridgeport. Chicago is a very segregated city.

There is not even a single area that is "mainly Italian;" the population peaks at 40 percent near the chunk of the freeway.

That means even that block/chunk is 60 percent something else.

Who cares anyway.

40% is a pretty big number for an Italian neighborhood today. Probably 20% Irish in that area as well.

And Polish, and Lithuanian, and most are probably mixed.

I agree. There is a big Lithuanian church in Bridgeport. Where are the Greeks at in Chicago? I know there's a pretty big population here of Greeks but don't know of any neighborhoods. There was greektown but that's just restaurants now.

Probably up north, if there are any left.

You can still see old Greeks playing cards and stuff at some of the bakeries in Greektown.

There's a Greek church downtown.

But I'm not really aware of any heavily Greek residential neighborhood.

The only really legitimate Caucasian ethnic enclaves left in the city is Belmont Cragin for Poles, many of whom are leaving, Canaryville (crazy) and, as we've discussed before, arguably Beverly an Mount Greenwood for Irish. And, to a very small degree, a few Italian enclaves.

But in terms of neighborhoods that are legitimately ethnic Caucasian the way, say, Little Village is Mexican, or Humboldt Park is Puerto Rican, it's really just Cragin and Canaryville IMO. Everything else is kind of a stretch.

Yeah Belmont Cragins polish. What about on Milwaukee avenue?
Agree with all the Irish ones.
We'll have to agree to disagree about Bridgeport being an Italian enclave.
What about the heart if Italy on 24 and Oakley?
