how does underboss and consigliere get paid? - 09/18/13 11:41 AM

Hey all, I have been wondering this for a while. I know the boss of the family gets kickups from all of his captains, but how does the consig and the underboss get paid? Do they get kickups from all of the captains too or how does it work? Thanks in advance.

Usually, the underboss or the consigliere (and the same goes with the boss by the way) have one or two guys direct with them, managing whatever rackets they are involved with. These guys are not however allowed to have crews and are only kicking up to the underboss/consigliere. Sometimes the boss split his rackets between the three of them but generally it all depends on what the arraignment is.

oh okay, that makes sense. so the guys kicking up to the consig and u.b dont have crews? im assuming they are captains right? they must have to be really good earners if they are not getting kickups from a crew right? who would want to have that position though? if you dont have a crew to kickup to you whats the point of being in a leadership position? or did you mean that the consig and u.b cant have crews?

The point is that these guys, who are direct with the administration, is closer to the power. Some of them are captains, others hold the ordinary rank of a soldier but in many ways they are far more powerful than any other captain/soldier in a Family because they are close with the administration. An underboss or consigliere are not allowed to have crews in case of a split within the family. A boss would never allow them to have crews. It´s common sense, it protects his power and grip of the Family.

Before running the family with Vic Amuso, Gaspipe reported directly to Christy Tick (consigliere). It was written that he requested this arrangement. He didn't want to the headaches of having a crew and just wanted to focus on his own drug empire.

Everybody in the administration - boss, underboss, and consigliere - are all entitled to tribute from the entire family. Not just the boss. So, the underboss and consigliere get that same general tribute the same way the boss does.

We've seen both arraignments being used. Sometimes the administration has no direct contact with rackets and just cut up the money being kicked up from captains. Other times, the consig and UB, keep their old crews and don't get any of the kickup money. However since their positions make them so much more influential and powerful, they rake in more money than other crew leaders.

When Castellano took over the Gambino family, he supposedly gave Neil a sweetheart deal to appease him. What was his deal and why was it unique?

I guess it was money based, where he made more money than your typical UB. I figure he didn't have a crew as that would have been too dangerous.

I'm a little sceptical about that. See, Paul was greedy in general and he stepped on a lot more toes than those of Neil with his later greed. If he was smart enough to understand that he had to appease Neil by giving him more money I think it's likely he was smart enough to understand that his greed would get him popped.

Greed didnt get him popped.

John Gotti under fear of death through his crew moving H did.

His greed simply limited the urge for reprisal.

That's true, but I think his greed, if John Gotti didn't pop him might have popped him in the future due to growing discontent among the ranks. I should have clarified this and this is me speculating.

Wasn't the sweetheart deal that Neil kept all the "blue collar" (hijacking, protection, gambling) crews and Paul kept the "white collar" (unions, construction, garbage, garments, etc) crews.

That's what most of the stuff I read says.

Correct me if I´m wrong, but the only true source of a "deal" made by Castellano and Dellacroce comes from Montiglio. He said sometthing to the effect of "Castellano told Dellacroce ´Anything you had with Carlo you keep. Anything else you want, we´ll talk´ And that´s how we made Paulie the boss." Now, what does that mean exactly? I´m sure it had nothing to do with dividing up white collar/blue collar rackets. Because Dellacroce had members of his faction involved with legitimate businesses and Castellano certainly had members of his faction involved with "traditional" rackets like loansharking, extortion, drug dealing etc that sometimes required "dirty work". I understand Montiglio´s words to mean that whatever mutual interest Dellacroce may have had with Gambino, for example a gambling operation (or whatever), he was allowed to keep for himself. That is if Montiglio told the truth of course.

They receive a 1099 for being independent contractors.

Found this while searching for other information concerning the Castellano/Dellacroce "deal":

Quote:
In 1966, Mr. Dellacroce was arrested in a police raid of the La Stella restaurant in Queens, where, the Joint Legislative Committee on Crime later charged, he and other Mafia leaders were plotting to depose Mr. Gambino.

It is from the New York Times article on Dellacroce's death. I found it interesting because I had never heard anything concerning this before.

It confirms what I had suspected earlier, that Gambino was at La Stella so he had knowledge of this supposed coup? I can't imagine anyone confronting Gambino, arguably the most powerful don at this time, and requesting that he step down.

La Stella was known as Little Apalachin too, right? Or am I confusing this with something else...?

Don't know if it was deal as in they sat down negotiated nd shook hands, but a deal as in "what's the deal?". You know what each side of the table ended up with, so to speak.

I don´t know the details or the exact date, but Dellacroce was sometime in the late 1960s, a victim of an assassination attempt. If I remember correctly, someone fired multiple shots into the Ravenite Social Club. It´s not clear who exactly the plotters were, but it looks like they were members of the Gambino faction. Around 1970, an interesting article appeared saying that Dellacroce was trying to gather support from other bosses around the country in an attempt to remove Gambino from power. If the article was telling the truth, Dellacroce either could not muster enough support for a coup or his attempt simply petered out due to legal troubles Dellacroce was having at the time.

LaStella was actually not the place of the supposed Commission meeting. The Commission would never have met in a public place like that during lunch time. I can´t imagine that anything of importance was being discussed there. The LaStella incident was most likely a break up of a lunch, some of the meeting attendees decided to go to.
