Senator Declares War On Gangster Disciples

They don’t call it the underworld for nothing. It's hidden beneath a shadow. Gangsters hate the limelight. It’s bad for business. The less people know about your business, the better. Once your name hits the newspapers you can start counting down the days until the FBI comes knocking down your door. It’s usually not the most vicious, dangerous, or powerful criminals that get caught, but the ones who simply are “known”.

For decades, American law enforcement has focused on the Italian Mafia, La Cosa Nostra. After prohibition, the Italian gangs grew into large and influential ‘families’, which had the power to make or break the most prominent politicians in the United States. They were a clear and present danger to the government and were dealt with accordingly. Numerous prosecutions weakened the Mafia until it posed no more danger to leading politicians.

But despite losing much of their power and influence La Cosa Nostra still managed to make or break careers in law enforcement. Thanks to Hollywood productions like The Godfather and Goodfellas and later HBO’s The Sopranos, the mob made plenty of headlines. And headlines make careers. FBI directors and prosecutors alike presented each big bust as being bigger than the one before and the media happily brought its viewers and readers the mob story they have grown accustomed to.

As the mob’s threat diminished, the threat that street gangs, drug cartels, and other organizations posed increased. Law enforcement, it seemed, had little interest in these groups. Their names did not sell newspapers or make careers like the names Gotti and Capone did. Until now.

This past year, the Gangster Disciples have made quite a few headlines. The Chicago street gang has had a very public beef with rapper Rick Ross. Ross used the name of Larry Hoover (right), the founder and imprisoned leader of the Gangster Disciples, in his hit record B.M.F. (Blowing Money Fast) and refused to give back to the gang in any way, shape, or form. This caused them to threaten the rapper in various YouTube videos and resulted in Ross canceling two shows of his nationwide tour. Hip hop websites, magazines, and blogs publicized heavily about the beef and it quickly hit the mainstream media as well.

Then there was the murder of 15-year-old honor student Hadiya Pendleton, close to President Obama's South Side home, just one week after she performed at events for Obama’s second inauguration. First Lady Michelle Obama attended Pendleton’s funeral.

The murder shocked the whole country. Pendleton was standing with a group of friends when they were seen as a rival gang by two young men who decided to shoot their guns at them. It is now believed that these men were affiliated with the Gangster Disciples.

Founded by David Barksdale and Larry Hoover in Chicago in the late 1960s, the Gangster Disciples gang has grown into an army of thousands of members across the United States. With these recent incidents the group has finally gotten the attention of the U.S. government.

“I would like to crush them, because they shot Hadiya,” Illinois Senator Mark Kirk (right) bluntly told Fox32 in Chicago. “We have that Al Capone image”, Kirk said as he explained people’s reaction when he told them about being from Chicago. The Senator thinks it is time to clean up the streets. As a member of the Senate’s Appropriations Committee he has the power to shift millions of dollars in funds to Chicago law enforcement in order to do just that.

“My top priority is to arrest the Gangster Disciple gang, which is 18,000 people. I would like to do a mass pickup of them and put them all in the Thomson Correctional Facility,” Kirk told Fox32. “I will be proposing this to the assembled federal law enforcement: ATF, DEA and FBI.”

As any Italian-American mobster will tell you: “Fuggedaboutit, this is the beginning of the end.” http://gangstersinc.ning.com/profiles/blogs/senator-declares-war-on-gangster-disciples

Alot of different sides of the GDS threatened Ross for instance here's youtube videos of the Colorado - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBX2LHDRGis and NC - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WIhZ0FA8fg. There's plenty of other vids from all over the US basically saying the same thing.

I agree on the publicity stunt. There was a "War on Gangs" back in the 70s and really didn't make things different. And the whole beef with rapper ross is due to some agreement between him and gd members that wasn't kept. Larry Hoover started the group back around 63/64 as originally the Supreme Gangsters.

Here's an interesting article i read on the GD'S a while ago - http://www.ngcrc.com/bdprofile.html warning it's quite long and comes with a cheesy gang prayer at the end lol

That's the Black Disciples not GDs.

read an FBI file on the Black Gangster Disciples in memphis. Some interesting stuff on them, they started popping up around 86 and allied themselves with the crips. Also had strong ties to chicago.Alot of the names and information was heavily redacted but their was some disturbing information given by an informant about the Black Disciples initiation methods at the time. This informant told authorities that to initiate new members they would have to drive around at night with their lights off and the first person to flash them would be followed home and killed. This might not have been true and the guy might have been lying for whatever reason but all urban legends come from somewhere.

Wow interesting group but the author is right, the authorities tend to go for the ones with the fame. They make headlines news and puts the prosecutors in the headlines making them local house hold names or heroes. Prompting them more opportunities to further their career. But how organized is the gangsters disciples, I have no clue about them except for the fact that I know their name. You think the threats are being ordered from the upper echeleon or high ranking members or just your average gangster disciple looking to put his gangs on the map even further/seeking fame or notoriety? But damn 18,000 members is a lot but I bet they are spread out into different nothern states, Illinois being the main state that helds a large percentage of it's members.

Hey Bordertownresident, where you from? The GDs structure have broken down into various crews/factions. From the 80s until the late 90s they had a fortune 500 corporate structure but it's presently are more akin to independent firms. Yes they are in most Midwestern and southern states, some west coast/east coast cities as well. Now there membership estimates varies but there are the largest street gang in the chi and largest black gang in America.

I'm from the bordertown of Laredo, Texas man. I live right next to Mexico lol but yeah I've seen the Gangster's Disciple "documentary" from Gangland. I have always thought that the Chicago gangs were more organized than the west coast gangs, it seems most people think all street gangs operate the same way as Calfiornian gangs for some reason.

Re: senator declares war on the gangster disciples - 06/03/13 10:37 AM

Under the original bunch of leaders there were alot less factions, but i think that when any gang reaches over 10,000 members it will probably splinter off. I think blackfamily has more of an insight into the structures of west coast gangs, but i did find this article about crop gang in omaha that goes into it.

http://www.omaha.com/article/20130601/NEWS/706019895

Quote:
All 10 men are older than typical gang members, who are usually in their teens or early 20s. Eight of the men named in warrants this week are in their 30s, and the two others are in their late 20s.

Bruce Ferrell, a retired Omaha police officer and chairman of the Midwest Gang Investigators Association, said Friday that he knows most of the men involved, including Liggins. He's watched them rise in the ranks, though he said street gangs have no formal hierarchy.

Instead, Liggins and his counterparts gained power and notoriety because of the many crimes they've committed and subsequent prison terms they've served.

The younger gang members look up to them, and their neighbors, meanwhile, fear them.

“They aren't elected, but because they've done 'work' for the gang, they get a status,” Ferrell said. “Respect from gang members means fear and intimidation, and their reputations horrify people.”

Even though the men have grown older, they're not retired, Ferrell said.

“They may not be out doing the shootings every day, but they are committing crimes in conjunction with their gangs' activities,” he said.
How the living is like being that close to the border? GDs are in Texas as well and that's true about one of the main difference between chi town gangs and L.A gangs. Generally speaking chi gangs outside Illinois are usually more subtle as well.

Not the west coast gangs but the Midwest gangs. Due to location.

Sen. Mark Kirk Retreats On Mass Gang Arrest Plan, Concedes Idea Is 'Not All That Practical'
Posted: 07/20/2013 12:15 pm EDT | Updated: 07/20/2013 12:15 pm EDT

Illinois U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is taking a step back from his proposal to make sweeping arrests of the 18,000 members of the Gangster Disciples, one of Chicago's most notorious and violent street gangs.

The plan drew sharp criticism from Illinois Congressman Bobby Rush who blasted Kirk's idea as an "upper-middle-class, elitist white boy solution to a problem he knows nothing about."

After Rush unloaded his harsh words, the two met to discuss solutions to Chicago's rampant gang violence problem, and in a Thursday interview with WBEZ, Kirk conceded, “Bobby Rush has been somewhat correct in his criticism of me that a mass arrest all at once is not actually that practical."

Kirk first called the idea his"top priority" in May when he told Fox Chicago he'd like to "crush" the city's gangs.

"I would like to a mass pickup of them and put them all in the Thomson Correctional Facility, I will be proposing this to the assembled federal law enforcement: ATF, DEA and FBI."

Kirk told WBEZ, the city's NPR affiliate, that he was outraged following the death of slain inaugural performer, Hadiya Pendleton.

Though he's abandoned the mass arrest strategy, Kirk said he still plans to target the city's gang problem by pushing for $500 million in extra federal spending on law http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/20/mark-kirk-gang-arrests_n_3628524.html

Whenever the murder/violence rate in Chicago goes back down to a more "normal" level; the pols will forget that the Gangster Disciples exist. Ask California politicians how they wiped out the bloods, crips, nortenos and surenos...oh wait still working on that.

All that talk about mass arrest was more of a publicity stunt.
