Another Mafia Hit in Montreal - 01/23/13 05:12 AM

Another player in the Montreal organized crime world has met an early demise. The latest victim has been id'd as 69-year-old Gaétan Gosselin, is the the brother-in-law of Raynald Desjardins apparently. More below...

-------------------------------------------------------

MONTREAL - A man was gunned down Tuesday near Langelier Blvd., at the intersection of Jean Tavernier and Pierre Gaulin Sts., as he was getting out of his car.

One or more men approached the victim, a man in his late 60s, at about 6:15 p.m. and fled after allegedly firing at him. He was shot in the upper body.

While police wouldn’t say if the homicide had an underworld connection, La Presse reported on Tuesday night that the victim was the brother-in-law and associate of Raynald Desjardins, the former right-hand man of reputed mob boss Vito Rizzuto. The newspaper reported it was Gaétan Gosselin, 69, who was almost home when he was gunned down.

Two men were later arrested in on Brunet Ave. in Montreal North in connection with the incident, according to Montreal police. Investigators were still trying to link them to the murder on Tuesday night.

It was the fifth homicide in Montreal this year.

Neighbours heard the shots and called 911. The man was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Desjardins fought a subpoena sent to him by the Charbonneau Commission last fall. He is expected to take the stand soon.

Here is more detailed French article regarding the hit on Gaetan Gosselin. A translation is below with a link to the original story...

-------------------------------------------------

The murder of a close associate of Raynald Desjardins and committed Tuesday night in the Mercier of Montreal has all the appearance of another attack against the powerful boss detained for the murder of an aspiring mobster.

And, a rare thing in this kind of well-planned murder, suspects were arrested a few hours after the crime.

At 18:15, Gaetan Gosselin, 69, was returning from the grocery store and was practically in front of him, Jean-Tavernier, near rue Pierre Gaulin. One or gunmen then arose and fired several gun shots, hitting the upper body and head. Nurse a neighbor and his wife tried to revive him, to no avail.

The man was transported to the Santa Cabrini Hospital, where he was pronounced his death later.

A few hours later, the Montreal police went on the street Brunet in Montreal-Nord, where they arrested two men after erecting a large security perimeter. Men will be interviewed to determine if they played a role in the assassination.

Gaetan Gosselin was little known. He had no criminal record. However, it has already attended a sister Raynald Desjardins.

Gosselin lived in a duplex located near the site of the tragedy, which belongs to the daughter of Raynald Desjardins, Vanessa. And was previously owned by Raynald Desjardins itself.

Gaetan Gosselin was little known and had no criminal record.

His name, however, was mentioned last fall Charbonneau commission. He was named among the business relationships Domenico Arcuri, a former close to Vito Rizzuto, who is now at loggerheads with the family since the beginning of the bloody power struggle that animates the criminal Italian since the arrest and incarceration of the sponsor in the United States.

At the Commission, the profile Arcuri was filed, among others, as president of decontamination carbon neutral company in which Raynald Desjardins was involved.

Gosselin was a shareholder of carbon neutral, as President of the Family Trust Buzio - the main shareholder of a numbered company (9183-5371 Québec), itself the first shareholder of the International Society for carbon neutral.

Originally from outside Montreal, Gosselin, who was a heavy equipment operator, arrived in the city in the early 1970s. He began to attend the sister Raynald Desjardins, and the latter has gradually involved in criminal activities.

By the mid 1980s, the name Gosselin already appeared alongside that of the boss in organization of the police. It was then considered the letter from Desjardins. Subsequently, Gosselin was involved in the collection and money lending, including casino, has given us a trustworthy source. Over the past 30 years, he was the right-hand man and trusted Raynald Desjardins, and occupied much of the family of the latter. According to our information, he also occupied a part of his master's affairs since the arrest of the latter, in December 2011, for the murder of Salvatore Montagna aspiring sponsor.

Cleaning rule

This murder is obviously a direct attack against the organization of Raynald Desjardins - especially since it was committed in the heart of the family feud. According to our sources, it also sends a clear message announcing a cleaning rule and a ruthless vengeance, in a context where individuals have recently been advised by the police or by their lawyer that their lives were in danger.

Members of the organization Desjardins and that of its allies, Giuseppe De Vito, aka Ponytail, would essentially be affected by this wave of attacks. She reportedly began dramatically at the beginning of November, when another brother Raynald Desjardins, Joe Di Maulo was killed in Blainville. It accelerated thereafter with a series of murders and attempted murder in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville and a coffee Rivière-des-Prairies.

According to our sources, a resumption of control by Sicilian mafia, decimated after a failed putsch in 2009-2010, is behind this series of murders and attempted murders. Recall that the godfather of the Montreal Mafia, Vito Rizzuto, who was released from prison last October, is currently in the Dominican Republic.

I'm guessing the authorities of the US aren't working closely with those of Canada, at the moment. From what I've read, the Mafia still have quite the presence in Montreal. Especially with the recent murders.

To me it seems it's kind of an power struggle, first of Vito's son and father get murdered. Now others get murdered, but Vito hasn't been touched.

Mercier murder: no charges against the suspects today

Investigators Montreal police have not interviewed and do not plan to file charges against today the two men arrested Tuesday in connection with the murder of Gaétan Gosselin, a former partner and brother of the powerful Mafia Raynald Desjardins.

Men 29 and 34 years were arrested shortly after 21h street Brunet in Montreal-Nord borough, less than three hours after the crime. They would have vainly tried to flee the scene. The police refused to say where the information that led investigators to the men so quickly, and to confirm the exact role that the duo have played in the murder appears to be yet another attack against the clan Desjardins.

"They will be examined later in the evening. Investigators have plenty of work on the crime scene, and on the street where there Brunet to conduct a search," said agent Daniel Lacoursière, spokesman SPVM.

If men appear before a judge, it should be Thursday.

This type of murder in organized crime is usually thoroughly prepared. Also, few arrests at these regulations authorized account in high places, especially so soon after a crime.

The investigators hope that their luck will advance further investigations of unsolved murders in the middle of the mafia. According to our sources, the arrests should give cold sweats to several players the power struggle that decimated troops Mafia in Montreal in recent years.

Vito Rizzuto he resumed his title sponsor of the Montreal Mafia? The question arises that since the murder of the old mafia Joe Di Maulo, November 4 in Blainville, the dead and wounded accumulate in the camp of his enemies.

The latest Gaetan Gosselin, killed with automatic weapons Tuesday night, was not a major player. But it is what it symbolized that matters. He was the breadwinner of Raynald Desjardins, suspected by police of being involved in the failed putsch against the Sicilians in 2009-2010. Even if it is not proved that the shadow of Vito Rizzuto behind this series of flat-settling is what many of our sources' argument, both in the media and police and criminal justice.

"Vito, everyone loves," told us a person well grounded in the criminal underworld. "He has taken his place and he is surrounded," said a policeman. "He is very strong. And his vengeance does not stop there, "predicted a lawyer.

Already considered criminals in the heyday of his reign, Vito Rizzuto has probably earned respect in serving his sentence without saying anything, unlike the leaders of the Bonanno clan, who are at the table. In its strongholds of Little Italy or Saint-Léonard, nobody sees, but everyone talks about it, we respectfully nicknamed Zio (uncle in Italian), like his father.

Immediately after his release, on October 5, Vito Rizzuto stayed in Toronto to measure its support and get green lights, they said. But could it be that it is rather to announce that he would take his place, he and some of our sources not considered as the godfather of the Italian Mafia in Montreal, but as the leader of the entire mafia Canada? Can we go further reflection and wonder if he even lost his only title during his long detention?

In Ontario, the Calabrian mafia is primarily, although it is mostly Sicilian Montreal. Vito Rizzuto, who was re-established in the metropolitan area, is therefore strong support who waited patiently for his return, in the shade, especially during and after the fall of the clan, sealed by the death of the patriarch Nicolo under eyes of his wife and daughter, two years ago. It is the swing of the pendulum, and the hour of revenge has come.

Since his return, major players in the mafia and organized crime have rallied to him, while others were forced to retire and sell their "activities", our sources have told us. "The more time passes, the stronger it gets," we were told.

These informants imagine evil or simply Vito Rizzuto went sunbathing in the Dominican Republic, where it would be easy for him to meet and further strengthen its position.

But if Vito Rizzuto is on track to regain his title, his situation is still fragile. According to our sources, some of his enemies were advised by police or lawyers that their lives were in danger, but they still have enough strength and support for cons-attack. The blood should flow even in Montreal. We know whether Vito Rizzuto will be officially wound in the saddle when the citizens of Little Italy and Saint-Léonard cross in the street, calling Zio.

4 arrested in Gosselin homicide ‘working for the Mafia’: Police

Slain man had links with Raynald Desjardins

MONTREAL - At least one of four men arrested Wednesday in connection with the shooting death of Gaétan Gosselin had well-established ties to Montreal’s Bo-Gars street gang.

Gosselin, a business associate of reputed mobster Raynald Desjardins, was gunned down outside his St-Léonard home on Jan. 22. At the time, a police source told The Gazette the hit may have been carried out on behalf of a rival faction within Montreal’s mafia, to send a message to Desjardins.

Montreal police commander Ian Lafrenière said Wednesday that the murder suspects are high-ranking street gang members believed to be contracted by the Italian mob. The killing is almost certainly part of an ongoing feud within the city’s criminal underworld, in which mobsters have increasingly enlisted the help of street gangs to do their bidding.

Edrick Antoine, 34, was arrested Wednesday for his alleged role in the Gosselin homicide and has ties to former Bo-Gars chief Chenier Dupuy. Antoine and Dupuy were both charged with trafficking cocaine in Montreal North nearly 17 years ago, according to court documents.

Dupuis himself fell victim to a gangland hit last summer when he was shot to death outside a steak house in the city’s east end. Experts speculated the killing may have been retaliation for the Bo-Gars’ alleged role in helping a group of gangsters attempt to seize control of the Montreal mafia after reputed boss Vito Rizutto was jailed in 2006.

Antoine will likely appear in Montreal’s superior court Thursday where he will be charged alongside Olivier Guay, 30, Standley Minuty, 29, and 29-year-old Kevin Tate. The suspects have lengthy rap sheets, which include charges for drug trafficking, weapons possession, assault and uttering death threats.

Two of the four men were arrested shortly after the Gosselin killing but released without being charged, according to Lafrenière. The police commander credited an intense investigation — along with tips received from the public — for the arrests.

They will face charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy in connection with the Gosselin killing.

Gosselin was just one of the Desjardins associates gunned down in the past 18 months. Desjardins’ brother-in-law and veteran mafioso Joseph Di Maulo, 70, was killed outside his Blainville home last November. Antonio Pietrantonio, 49, was shot and critically wounded outside a restaurant on Jarry St. E. in December. Pietrantonio — also known as “Tony Suzuki” — survived the shooting.

Police say the Desjardins associates belonged to a faction of the mob that attempted to fill the void left by Rizzuto while he served a 10-year prison sentence in the United States. Salvatore “The Ironworker” Montagna was also said to be a part of that group. He was murdered while fleeing a house on Île Vaudry on Nov. 24, 2011. Police subsequently arrested and charged Desjardins for allegedly ordering the killing.

Lafrenière said more arrests could be made in connection to the January murder. He also asked for information from the public detailing any possible sightings of men resembling the suspects aboard two vehicles.

One is a 2002-model, navy-blue Chrysler Caravan. The other is a 2000 Mazda Protégé, described as beige or gold.

“These were vehicles that were seen close to the house of the victim,” Lafrenière said. “We believe the suspects have been using those vehicles.”

Its going to be very interesting to see how this all unfolds. So many different groups getting involved in this war to prove and advance themselves. Rizzuto really kept everyone in check and he predicted this would all happen when they were extraditing him. I can't wait to see who ends up on top when the dust settles.
