New mobsters vs old mobsters - 01/05/13 11:57 PM

What would you say that newer mobsters are doing different than the dee mobsters? It seems as though there are a lot more FBI informants today than ever. There is also a lot of mobsters today getting locked up. Are the newer guys talking too much? Are they too flashy? What is it that makes them seem so much less of a traditional mafioso?

Damn, your coming up with some great questions! Real quick I think the informants is a hybrid, has a lot to do with the time and penalties handed down since the "war on crime" and society today. There is very little honor anymore. However if you weren't looking at 35 years and your family in the street, life would be easy. Canada has very few rats. But up there you get community service for murder!

The newer mobsters face a better organized and equipped law enforcement than their predecessors did. They're also more assimilated into mainstream American society, and therefore, that much farther removed from old culture that kept their predecessors more loyal and better disciplined.

Agreed, as well as what Ivy pointed out. I stand by the fact that once RICO was embraced by law enforcement, they were given a huge weapon to use against OC. However, I firmly believe that this has made them sloppy and lazy, especially with regards to investigative rigor, use of unreliable "rats", and just using the "if you talk to any criminal you will be busted" statute that makes RICO formidable.

Not all young guys are complete idiots! A lot of them are just juiced up punks but some are smart.

No, they're certainly not all idiots. That would be an unfair description. But the Italian Americans today just don't grow up in the type of poverty that it takes to make a real gangster. That poverty bred a different mentality years ago. I think that's the major difference in the young vs. old debate.

I like you, Skinny. You've been a valuable addition here. But may I ask how old you are? I only ask because debates like this often turn into younger posters vs. older posters lol.

I seem to remember in the Old days. Not everyone gave up their childhood friends once they got pinched. I remember one guy that told his wife to forget about me think of me as dead. Never visit him in jail, and divorce him and get married again and start a new life.

Who would do that nowadays.

Hey pizza boy you with the Harlem Giglio guys? Why can't I find any CDs with the Giglio marches on them?

I have one made by tuddy in the 60s. On the old neighbor hood site they had 106 street march that was from my old record. My contribution to the site. Richie Brown

My father is 83 now. He's still on the committee. But he lives up in Eastchester now. I live in Throggs Neck. Whatever trips we make to the neighborhood today are pretty much nostalgic. There's really no one left. I took him to Mount Carmel for Christmas week. We still ate at Andy's once a week until they finally packed it in a few years ago. Things like that.

I'm not sure about the cds, but you can hear one of the marches on the intro to the website. Click below.

You know every time I talk to people about Harlem I make it sound we lived in Disney land. In my mind now I did. But back then it was a little different.

Remember the football games we had in Jefferson park?

The two hand touch games was interesting. We block traffic until the play was over. Once a guy kept blowing his car horn at us. Next thing you know we are cursing at the guy. Then he makes tge mistake of telling us he is going home to get his gun. Once we heard that we could not let him go home and get his gun.

They're not even Guidos, LCN1987.

I'm 53, and believe me, the '70s were full of Guidos too (as embarrassing as that is to admit). But these kids look more like metrosexuals. I'll bet they shave their pubes.

The new mobsters don't have the fire anymore to stay quiet. You get a fed in their face telling them they are going away for the rest of their life and they shake in their shoes.

The old school mobsters would have laughed in the feds face and told them to go fuck themselves.

Re: New mobsters vs old mobsters - 01/08/13 07:36 PM

The new mobsters values have changed. They care about the mob until they caught doing something and then they turn on it.

If they had to spend any certain time in prison they would do anything to save their own ass. The mafia code of silence is not taken seriously anymore.

They want the fame and fortune but to go away to prison for 15-20 years is not worth it to them. So once they get caught they turn into a rat.

The old school mobsters are proud to know that they have served their time honoring the promise they kept when they were made. Its an honor to them to have spent years in prison over something they feel so strongly about. Plus remember, the Witness protection program caused many mobsters to turn rats. It wasn't created until 1970. So what do they do? The feds offer them a new name, a new house, protection for them and their family, and a new job if they give up their own people when they are caught with a crime that will send them away for years and years.

The old school mobsters in the 40's, 50's, and 60's never had the opportunity of the Witness protection program, so they kept their mouths shut and did their sentence.

Times are different now. Its the same thing as the guy in Charlie and the Chocolate factory who offers Charlie a better life to get inside information about Willy Wonka.

Re: New mobsters vs old mobsters - 01/08/13 08:16 PM

Back on a se se se serious note in regards to this, I really don't thin there are "new vs old mobsters" these days people get elected by putting guys away. Before a boss could get you thousands of votes in areas. And you don't think that gave them power, a thousand times over the "I put you here in office, now keep me out of jail" speech happened. And politicians appoint judges, cops etc. Alao back then you could have a Cop look the other way for a box of donuts and $20, today those guys all want to play a hero and keep thier ridiculas pension. And the Govt has teeth to take everything you've ever bought, even the clippers you shave your most grateful Italian gift with. Imagine your wife and kids getting thrown in the street? That would make a lot of tough guys weak! For me throw me away I don't give a shit about myself! I just want to make sure my wife and kids are safe and taken care of. That's an additional part, there use to be funds put aside to take care of a guys legal bills and family if they went away! Today it's rare if at all. These guys know your gone forever so what's the point! There is very little sense of brotherhood! Unless that guy puts cash in your pocket! Then he's your brother, when that stops your a memory!
