What was he thinking?!

I had a question regarding Willie Boy Johnson, a Gambino associate and close friend of John Gotti who worked as an informant for years before he was gunned down in 1988.

From what I read from various sources, Willie Boy Johnson was exposed as an secret informant around the time John Gotti ascended to the title of Gambino boss. Johnson was offered witness protection, but chose to stay in Brooklyn instead, until he was murdered.

Was he crazy?! Given the notoriety of Gotti and the Mafia as a whole, I couldn't imagine why any LCN turncoat would want to stay in New York. I would of been begging the F.B.I to hide me away, not stay where I could get killed!
