Brazil and Argentina - 09/30/12 07:57 PM

Why don't we hear of homegrown mafia in these countries? Several million Italians emigrated to these countries. Over a million (many Sicilians) went to Brazil and a couple million Italians emigrated to Argentina. Occasionally we read of fugitives or maybe a retired gangster but nothing major like in other countries. Is it assimilation or some other reason? Outside Europe, most of the activity we read about occurs in anglo saxon countries (US, Canada and Australia). Thoughts?

i don't think so, in the 1880-1970 period the sicilians emigrated abroad were about 2.000.000, half of them in the states
the majority of people in south america have north and central italian descent, that's one reason because probably the mafia doesn't develop as a domestic crime group so much
but it's also true that the latin and african countries absorbed italians quickly compared to anglosaxon ones

You are correct about Brazil. According to wiki article, of the 1.2 million who emigrated there, only 44k are from Sicily. I thought it was a greater percentage. Overall, about half a million are from south Italy. Three presidents had Italian ancestry.

Yeah but that's different compared to South America. Spain is much closer and they started getting there more recently...def not the early 1900's.

Costa Del Sol speaks Neapolitan, has been for a while.
They buy condos, restaurants, clubs, laundering their money.
