Running Cigarettes - 09/06/12 07:33 PM

Virginia now seems to be the state alot of people are going to get the cheapest cigarette's and run them up the coast to Ny and other places cigarette's are taxed heavily. It used to be North Carolina but the article says Virginia has the second lowest tax on smokes. They're claiming that running the ciggies up the coast is more profitable then ever.

If you're asking about New York, I see them for @12/pack. It wasn't that long ago when I used to pay $12 for a whole carton!

The taxes on cigarettes (especially in places like NY) is creating the market for bootleg (buttleg?) ciggies. The gangs dealing with this market stand to make big bucks (relative to the punishment if caught).

Thankfully i gave up smoking years ago. Used to be a pack a day Marlboro Red box guy myself. It took me a few try's but i finally kicked them.

Are bootleg cigarette's a big problem in NY these days? The article makes it sound like just running the real ones up the coast is pretty profitable.

I don't smoke anymore but when i did i smoked mayfair it's ridiculous how much they go up in price. When i started (4 and a half years ago) it was £.1.99 for 10 i saw the other day they're now £.3.46 for 10 i know it's been a while but that's ridiculous imo.

Ova here i buy my cig's for 2eur,i smoke two packs a day so i spend 4 euro's a day, there used to be a lot of bootleg cigs ova here,a lot of crime bosses were connected with eastern europe and tons of cigs were goin in and out,but right now the companies took over, but the quality is the same, shitty as always. The last good Marlboro cig i tried was in Monte Carlo,it costed 5 euro a pack, and when i opened the pack the smell was....paradise wink cool

On a fictional note. Moltisanti went on a run down to Winston-Salem NC to smuggle some cigs. Hooked up with a group of bikers down there IIRC.

And if it happened in the Sopranos it must be true!

From the Article

"Because Virginia's tax is $3 on a 10-pack carton and the tax is $58.50 in New York City, an automobile load can net a profit in tens of thousands of dollars while a full U-Haul trailer could net $670,000."

I'm not sure about the numbers they're using. A $670,000 profit from one load? But even if the true profit is a quarter of that it still is a nice chunk of change to make for 1 run.

Here in Arizona you could buy them on one of the Indian reservations and bring them to California and be a very rich man.

What I can say is this, If it is costing more for a pack of Cigs or some Drink then the Mob will get involved for cheaper. More customers they get then more profit they earn.

New York is getting rid of the RYO stores, but if you have half a brain and don't mind smoking a rollie, it's not exactly rocket science to find a little shithole that'll roll you up a carton. And there's always online.

Re: Running Cigarettes - 11/16/12 01:49 PM

it seems like things go full circle. The more the U.S. tries to put the squeeze on the selling of cigarettes, it will recreate the business opportunities for the mob by trying to price them and tax them out of consumers' hands. but people will still want to smoke so do you think they want to pay the markup? As Winston ads state, "At least you can still smoke in your house..."

And what do you mean by this and how do I reference myself as an "Expert". The Mob is a term for every American criminal organization "La Cosa Nostra/Mafia". You understand what I mean so why become an Idiot with me? The Chicago Outfit, The Genovese Family ETC.. would more than likely be involved. If the government keep putting up prices, Less customers shops will get. The Mob will sell them and earn FAST.
