How Are things with the Gambino's Now?? - 11/16/11 01:44 PM

It was interesting that recently the family elected a new boss and consigliere, no more ruling panels and acting bosses. So have there been any whispers about what is happening with the family since? What do you guys predict in the coming few years? A more stable family?

Also do you think its likely that Cefalu has inducted new members given his new power?

It was surprised that they elected to install guys in an official, i.e. permanent, position. Given the high turnover due to indictments, it just makes more sense to do things with acting bosses or ruling panels so there is less clear lines of reporting the feds can identify.

I don't know if that, in an of itself, signifies a more stable family. But the Gambinos have stabilized to a degree since the 1990's. They continue to be the 2nd strongest family in the U.S. A lot of people wrote them off after the chaos from the Gotti days. But they are too big of a family to just disappear over night. Or even over several years.

I wonder how long Cefalu will last when it takes the US authorities only a couple of weeks to figure out who´s at top. As soon as prosecutors feel they´ve got a solid Rico case, Cefalu will be charged.
Gone are the days when Bonanno, Profaci, Lucchese, Gambino, Magaddino and other powerhouses back in the days ruled for 20, 30 and even 40 yaers!

Normally, when a boss is made, he makes people to stabilize his power within the Family. Soldiers are usually made capos and other capos are bumped down to soldiers when a boss is made.
So probably, Cefalu has made new recruits and rearrenged the Family´s structure a little bit.

Didn't a year ago, they said Jackie Nose was the official boss? Another media speculation perhaps?

Yeah the media had that wrong, at most he was on a ruling panel of captains. It appears that Cefalu is definitely the official boss, Capeci and Law enforcement have commented on this as being true.

D'Amico was the acting boss. He was indicted as such in the February 2008 bust. At that time, Cefalu was acting underboss and Jo Jo Corozzo was the consigliere. After that, it was a 3 man ruling panel of Danny Marino, John Gambino, and Bobby Vernace. After Marino and Vernace were indicted in 2010, Cefalu became official boss, replacing Peter Gotti. Arnold Squitieri still the underboss and is due to be released from prison soon. And Vernace replaced Corozzo as consigliere.

Ivy, I am pretty sure the media named Jackie Nose as the new boss (not acting boss) in 2009 or 2010. I can't find the article since it is old news.

Always go with an indictment over some press article. Peter Gotti was still the recognized official boss at that point.

At various times relevant to this Indictment–, the defendant JOHN D’AMICO, also known as “Jackie the Nose” and “Jackie,” was a solidar, captain and acting boss in the Gambino family.

Ivy, same goes for Amuso and Persico? Sources still say the are the official bosses. But i wonder what the word is on the street, members of those families may have an official boss without knowledge of the feds?

Yes, Amuso and Persico are still recognized as the official bosses. I don't think either will be officially replaced until they die. Certainly not Carmine. There's no need to. And if it happened, it would leak out eventually.

I was wondering if Amuso and Persico will still get a large chunk of the crew's earnings like if they were out on the street? I mean if they held little sway with the Family, it's only logical to assume captains would not give their dues to the boss.

The most recent Gangland article mentions that Scarfo Jr. and co. were still kicking up a taste the way of "Uncle Vic".

It probably suits the acting boss if law enforcement have an official boss to focus on who is in prison. I think they would give the money to their wives, children etc.

Exactly what Nicky said. Anyway, you can never have too much money.

A more intriguing question would be how much less kickups they would get from their crews. I know wiseguys in the can were pretty much left on their own device and nobody took care of them. I know things would be different for Amuso and Persico since they are bosses. Let's take into consideration that there is a great probability that these bosses are just figureheads and a 'lightning rod' for guys on the street, and they held little or no say to the affairs of their respective Families.

Re: How Are things with the Gambino's Now?? - 11/19/11 01:04 PM

Amuso and Persico apparently still get their cut. Or their families anyway. Obviously Persico has still had a lot of his own family on the street to see after his interests. People write off Amuso but he's still has influence from prison. DeFede flipped because Amuso suspected him of holding out on him when later acting bosses like Crea and Daidone were kicking up more to him. And obviously Nicky Jr. was kicking up to him as well. Though there is probably a more personal connection there, since Amuso and his father were friends and it was Amuso who got Nicky made in the family for his protection.

And while it's true that the guys on the street are content to have the official boss behind bars, that doesn't mean the official boss is powerless. They are not in a position to run things day to day but they often still have a great deal of clout.

Re: How Are things with the Gambino's Now?? - 11/19/11 01:26 PM

You are right on the money on the difference between the two bosses. Also, I will be the first to put my hand up about writing off Amuso. Some even suggested he was a puppet for Casso when they were out on the street.

As for these bosses still having a say on the street, I somewhat doubt it considering any contact with them would be watched by the authority. Although, I did recalled the Genovese, supposedly the most sophisticated of the Five Families, went to Barney, their acting boss who was in prison at the time, to sort out some table issue in Rao's. Needless to say Barney was furious.

Re: How Are things with the Gambino's Now?? - 11/19/11 01:34 PM

Well, as I pointed out, Amuso still carries a certain amount of clout as evidenced by the fact that he still gets his money and has influence with the guys running things on the street. And he was never really a puppet for Casso. He was just a somewhat hands off boss who was content to let Casso run things directly. But it was Amuso who ultimately stripped Casso of his rank towards the end.

Bosses in prison are able to pass messages via their lawyers or family members. Gotti did it through his brother Peter and his son. Gigante did it through his son.

Re: How Are things with the Gambino's Now?? - 11/19/11 02:07 PM

That's why the Gambino loved Jojo Corozzo's kid.

On the subject of Vic and Gas, didn't Casso passed up on promotion both as captain to Christie Tick's crew and the big seat of the Lucchese Borgata to Vic? If that is the case, I would assume Gaspipe would have more clout than Vic.

Although, I am not convinced Amuso was just a puppet as some suggested.

I would think that the fact that these guys have done nothing to curb their sentences should warrant them receiving some tribute -or at least their families should receive the tribute. Very few doing substantial prison time can say that - Amuso, Persico, Graziano, Franzese, who else...?
