Who do you think was the most feared of the Westies Coonan or featherstone? I mean i know featherstone is known to be the psycho with a screw loose because ofhis Vietnam experiences. But I think Coonan was just as bad if not worse. his whole obsession with Spillane, carrying severed heads and showing them at bars, and even mixing with the italians was pretty crazy

How insane was that crew? Roy Demeo was put in charge of them by Big Paul. That's like the lunatics taking over the isylum!

ya in the 70's the Gambinos were the most feared and powerful thanks in part to those two crews

I don't know about the most powerful, I'm pretty sure the Genovese's have always had the top spot in terms of power with the Gambino's matching and possibly surpassing them in size for a time.

wasn't paul the boss of bosses? I know the genovese were in the top 2 but i thought in the 70's early 80's the gambinos were the top family and then once gotti took over the genovese became the number one family

Thats a tough one, Coonan and featherstone were both killers, both unpredictable...featherstone was always drunk or coked up too...thats not a good combo for someone like him. I know it's hard to believe a lot of what dominick montiglio says but he was quoted saying "Featherstone was probably the most feared of any of the westies"

Are they fully defunct now? Most people seem to say so...

From the late 1960's to the early 1990's, or about 25 years, the Gambinos rivaled the Genovese within New York. But I don't think they ever supplanted them.

The "boss of bosses" is not an actual title in LCN.

I agree with Ivy in that, though they are at times underrated, I dont believe they were ever the "stronger" Family. I think the confusion comes from how much more visible the Gambino's seem to have been over the decades.

As for the most feared, I have to say Featherstone. The guy had quite a rep in Hells Kitchen.

And just think, Featherstone is walking the streets after cooperating! He could be your next door neighbor or the guy you flip this morning on your way to work! he was a very bad man!

Eddie Cumminsky gets my vote as he was a really violent man and it was him apparently that taught Coonan to dismember and NOT Roy DeMeo as you might think.

ya i heard Coonan wasn't too knowledgeable with the dismembering process. I think Ruby Stein's body was recovered and it nearly got the westies killed.

Ruby was found after his torso washed up on a beach and identified coonan forgot to pop the lungs,featherstone was dangerous in terms of shooting people,but coonan was a pyscho in terms of waiting for a body to bleed out for 40 minutes then chopping it up.
