I read it at the bookstore ( I was too cheap to buy it) and found it informative. There's a lot of good info in there about the Gotti brothers and about the Gambino family. Charles Carneg speaks highly of his brother John; Charles sounds like a typical younger brother who idolized his older brother. He also says that Gene and John Gotti were two of the tougher guys in the neighborhood growing up. He says that they were pretty good with their fists and that they kept themselves in good shape and didn't smoke or drink much.
It's interesting to read that Charles, although he could be brutal and psycopathic, was a loving, caring son who looked after (and lived with) his elderly mother before his last arrest.

Decent mob book. Worth at least skimming through.

Pretty complete story about old Charlie...has a good section on his claim of using acid to dissolve bodies and torture people...he had a reputation and because his brother was John Carneglia he survived at a time when some people in the life might have wasted him.

Just finished it. It's OK. I think the Capeci/Mustain books are significantly better than DeStefano's books. Although DeStefano does include some facts that you can't get just anywhere - like the fact that Charles changed his mother's diapers.

destefano's book on massino is hands down one of the best LCN books ever written.

Ditto!

DeStefano really hit it out of the park with that book. "Mob Killer" may not have been as good, but it was better than 90% of the other mob books currently on the market (Philip Carlo, anyone?).

I don't care for Philip Carlo books. I thought some of the way Charles Carneglia was described in the book made him sound like an outsider weirdo or some strange hermit. Maybe he was!!

even though carlo is dead. his writing is like a crack pot believing any lies any pshycho killer was willing to tell him. the sad thing is some publishing company thought it would be a good idea to market his books as non fiction.

peter maas was the author of underboss. carlo did write about some gangsters, and wannabe gangsters. but it seems he was just more interested in any psycho path. too bad he didn't get to pete the greek! the greek's story was embelished but it was more interesting than iceman or the night stalker. as for the butcher and casso they were ok. but i have a hard time believing anything that comes outta casso's mouth. talk about a true nutjob. what makes anyone think hes gonna tell the truth to an author? he couldnt even be honest with the federal goverment when he snitched!

underboss was an awesome book i must say even though i am sure sammy took his own viewpoint of the truth on some stuff

i actually enjoyed casso's book, i made my own conclusions based on other stuff but all in all i was very happy to read something on casso as he is one of the most interesting lcn guys to me
