infamous Gemini Lounge - 06/07/11 08:51 AM

It’s a former Mafia slaughterhouse where God — and not the Godfather — calls the shots now.

A Brooklyn building that once housed the infamous Gemini Lounge — where Gambino crime-family soldiers carried out countless, unspeakable mob murders — has become the Flatlands Church of God, drawing faithful every Sunday to sing praises to the Almighty.

Donald Williams, pastor of the mob killing-field-turned-Pentecostal church at Flatlands and Troy avenues, said he didn’t know his church site’s gruesome history before paying $220,000 for it in 1997.

The two-story brick building is where Gambino soldier Roy DeMeo and his crew of Mafia psychopaths whacked and dismembered anywhere from 70 to 200 victims in the 1970s and early ’80s, according to prosecutors.

But Williams said he doesn’t regret buying the property -- even as the church now struggles years later to stay afloat and raise money for necessary repairs.

"I think God sent us here for a reason," Williams said. "After we opened, many of our neighbors said our coming was a sigh of relief. They said if a church is here, God is here, and they could finally sleep at night."

The pastor also said he believes the church’s presence has saved souls of people murdered there.

The church’s altar and seating area for its 100 members was once a smoke-filled dance floor at the old lounge.

An elevated stage, now used for a public address system, is where DeMeo usually sat and kept a safe to stash loan-shark money, guns and other valuables.

And a side apartment, now used for church offices, was where unsuspecting victims were lured and killed in an execution style dubbed the "Gemini Method."

The system was designed to eliminate messiness, prosecutors say.

Someone would shoot the victim once in the head and then wrap a towel around his wound like a turban to stem blood flow. Another person would then stab the victim in the chest to divert more blood from pumping out of the gunshot wound.

Before being tossed in bags and boxes and dropped at a local dump, the corpse would be chopped up in a basement room the church has since converted into a computer room and some bathrooms.

It was “an assembly line procedure,” said Walter Mack Jr., a former federal prosecutor who tried and helped convict some of DeMeo’s crew.

“People went to the Gemini Lounge and never returned.”

The pastor and his wife, Sarah, said they learned many of the building’s gruesome details after reading the 1993 book, "Murder Machine," by Gene Mustain and Jerry Capeci. It documents the tales of DeMeo, who is believed to have been whacked himself in 1983.

"I read most of it, but not all — it’s too gory," Williams said.

Capeci, who operates ganglandnews.com, said he’s glad to see a more peaceful use of the site.

“No matter how evil or corrupt a place is, it’s never too late to start anew,” he said.

You don't want to have a church there do you?

Definitely the worst place in New York to have a church... lol

wonder if its haunted my by chris rosenburg?

Re: infamous Gemini Lounge - 06/07/11 08:16 PM

Do any of you believe in hauntings? Seriously? The only reason why I wouldn't wanna live there is because I wouldn't wanna be associated with people like that. It's probably got DeMeo's DNA in there. The place is probably fine though. Maybe the best to raise a family. I don't know the schools there.

I don't believe in hauntings. But the thought of a church build on this ground? Well, that's not a fine idea too me.

i don't either but i really think that its odd to have a church on a mafia assembly line of death.

For anyone who doesnt know....

Type this into google maps

4021 Flatlands Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11234-3013, United States

you can get a street view of the church/old Gemini lounge.

Its the door at the side next to the fan grate that gives me the creeps - thats the entrance to Cousin Joe's (Dracula) old apartment where the "action" took place.

Does anyone know of any photos of Danny Grillo?
It would be nice to know what the dude looked like thats all.

Just imagine it, they would bring the bodies into the shower of this building and bleed them dry. Guy's like Chris Rosenberg and ted" Iceman" klasinski would chop them up. Roy Demao would show his appreciation by getting pizza for them afterwards.

ya grillo is one that would be interesting. didn't he help kill mickey spillane?

Re: infamous Gemini Lounge - 06/12/11 07:32 PM

DeMeo shot Spillane but Grillo was with him.
Roy actually met the Westies through Danny GRillo.

It was Grillo who shot Genovese loanshark Ruby Stein, Jimmy Coonan then dismembered the body.
It was mean of DeMeo to tun on Grillo but Grillo certainly wasnt a innocent man.
I'd just like to know what he looked like.

I forget Grillo was killed for stealing money or something right?

Re: infamous Gemini Lounge - 06/12/11 07:39 PM

Grillo was a hopeless and reckless gambler.
He was in debt to both Coonan and DeMeo and infact at one mob poker night, Dom Montiglio actually ripped up a $50,000 debt that Danny had ran up that night.
(Dom was attempting to help Danny).
DeMeo finally had enough of Grillo's debt and his inability to pay it back and so Danny fell victim to the infamous Gemini method!

Re: infamous Gemini Lounge - 06/12/11 07:44 PM

Ya I read he knew he was gonna get killed so he said goodbye to his family and went to his death like a man. Not a lot of mobsters have the guts to do that esecially since he knew exactly what would happen
Posted By: GaryH

Re: infamous Gemini Lounge - 06/12/11 07:49 PM

It really shows the brutal side of organised crime.

Grillo introduced Demeo to Coonan and the Westies.
His alliance with the Westies is what actually got Demeo made.

Roy forgot all that however when Grillo was late paying him what he owed.
Its bad enough killing and dismembering a stranger but to do it to a guy that you have been friends with...........

Awful!

Re: infamous Gemini Lounge - 06/12/11 07:52 PM

Ya but in a way it's hard to feel bad for any of these guys. I mean grillo was involved in murders and probably helped dismembered the bodies. so in a way it's kind of like you live by the sword you die by the sword

Ya thats DeMeo's old house! Btw at the end of Murder Machine it says that in the early 90s there was a news report which showed the public the inside of Dracula's old apartment on TV, has anyone seen this/know where to look to find it?

Re: infamous Gemini Lounge - 11/26/13 01:18 PM

According to Montiglio, Grillo came to him after loosing something like 250K one night. Montiglio interceded and the debt was paid by Gaggi/DeMeo. But Grillo lost big again and when he came back to Montiglio for help again Montiglio told Nino that he'd washed his hands of him.

When Grillo's wife kept calling Montiglio's house looking for him, Montiglio went over to the Gemini to see if there was any news. He spotted Rosenberg and asked him if he'd seen or heard anything. Rosenberg smiled said, "No one's going to be seeing him again."

Re: infamous Gemini Lounge - 11/26/13 04:18 PM

Montiglo also without permission wiped out 50k in markers to nino that grillo piled up at a casino night.

I doubt it. I get the impression that some of these shows are quite cheaply made. And much of the footage is put in for effect only.

For instance, the narrator is describing a murder while it shows footage of a carter driving down a narrow back alley, with large buildings on each side. Canarsie has few large buildings, (some warehouses but not tall). It is mostly single and two family homes, and those housing projects near Belt Pkwy.

FYI: the area surrounding the Gemini is entirely West Indian. I had two good friends who lived there in the 90's (jewish and italian). Area was almost completely transformed by then.

Re: infamous Gemini Lounge - 12/19/13 05:35 AM

I saw a Documentary where the Pastor of the church/Gemini lounge, after he was told by people in the neighborhood about what had occurred there, looked at it a sign from God. That it was a good thing that there is a church in such a horrible place.

Great attitude. I would have ran the fuck out.

Hahaha!...i liked the parts when they did the killing and then chopped the guy up. That was pretty funny shit.

The other scenes like in the car and in the backyard definitely needed something more.....but since it's the first episode i'll cut you some slack on that.

Put in a good soundtrack....Like Marty does. Can't go wrong with some good tunes in the backround.

Thanks for the feedback. It was an experiment that grew over time. I used original music because I don't have the budget that Marty has to pay for the rights. You might like this then, it's a trailer I made for this series and I was straight up trying to be like Marty.

If you have the privilege of being invited into a current mob social club that has been around for decades, you know for a fact that you are standing inside a place where some bad shit went down over the years.

Some still exist and some do not such as the Gemini. Anyone here know of the ones still in existence in New York that were around 30-40 years ago? I would imagine there has to be one still standing and in operation even though the days of murders and mayhem taking place inside are more than likely over. Just a place where connected guys go to be left alone and live out their golden years to socialize and have some drinks together.

An interesting note:

My friend Eric was co-owner of the Gemini Lounge after it was no longer the Gemini Lounge. eek

Yep, this is absolutely true.

He and another man had the place for a couple of years back circa 1990. I can't remember the partner's name, but he had a wonky eye and always had either a parrot or a large iguana on his shoulder. (I can't remember precisely.) The bar had been renamed Justin's Pub (after Eric's infant son) and the late Signora V. (the First) and I went there for a Halloween bash in 1990. I won first prize, dressed as Beetlejuice (see photo below), lip-synching "Monster Mash." Won a bottle of champagne. Signora V. dressed as a Lady Vampire.

At that time, Eric and I had been friends for around nine years, and he absolutely hated it when people came in looking for traces of the bar's Mafia roots. He claimed he didn't know anything about the place's history, and he and his partner ran a clean, Mob-free establishment.

They only had the place a couple of years, at most. He later relocated and, last I heard, became a prison guard in another state (I will not divulge where). Haven't seen him or heard from him in many years. Probably retired.

Anyway, I can actually claim to have been in the Gemini Lounge - albeit after all the notoriety!

We came out alive.

Did you ever enter the rear apartment on the 1st floor? Would you be able to draw a general Floorplan of the 1st floor? I've been there also.

I never thought the Gemini was a social club, I thought it was a bar. It was open to the public, anyone could drink there, or s I thought. The back room was kept off limits as far as I have seen, used by DeMeo.

The back of that bar was an exception, few clubs had acts committed in them, Gravano's was one place where killing took place. For the most part any "Murder and Mayhem" took place on the streets or isolated areas. There was lily planning of a lot of killings in certain clubs.

I'll have to wrack my brain about this one. Remember, I'm talking around 32 years ago, and I can't guarantee my memories of the layout will be 100% accurate. And, again, I was never in there when it was the Gemini Lounge, so I don't know if my friend and his partner did any major renovations.

But, I will give it a try.

As far as seeing other areas - the apartment, for example - no, I didn't see anything except the bar area itself. I did see my friend's partner go through a door which I assumed led to a private office area, but I did not go into that area, nor did I ask. Since my friend absolutely did not encourage curiosity-seekers and Mob-wannabes, I didn't even broach the subject. Also, he could handle himself - his nose had been broken boxing in the Golden Gloves. We were friends, but I respected the fact that the bar was his territory and he was doing his best to make an honest living from it. I wasn't interested in stirring the pot.

Signor V.

Any information you could provide would be extremely appreciated. Can you provide any info about this image inside the building. I think its from one the side doors with the diamond windows looking in.
