does anyone know the history of the mafia? was it a particular sicilian phenomenon, or also in other parts of italy? what were the roots of this organisation? when was it formed?

reading this article, i wonder why the mafia is so "popular" and the camorra is allmost unknown. are there any books or movies about the camorra?
