Yes, it is great. I think it didn't get all the credit it deserves.

While I personally was a little disappointed, the film really is a fantastic epic portraying friendship spanning over decades, and the undying love which they held for each other. Don't expect a film at which you can laugh like Goodfellas, as I think (Sergio) Leone has created perhaps the most chilling gangster flick you could ever see. And expect to be shocked by one of the (IMO) most distrbing rape scenes ever. My not liking it is strictly personal, not business; it's a cracking tale and I highly recommend it!

Once Upon A Time In America is one of my favorite gangster movies if not my favorite. If you get the unedited version its definately worth seeing, don't bother with a short version, though. The continuity sucks and it does not appear to be in depth. I liked this movie so much i paid $30 bones for the Brazillian copy of it on dvd. I didn't think they'd ever release it in the states.

That kinda put me off too, but the movie itself was good.

The rape scene added to the mood of the film, and showed the vulnerability of Noodles, through his moral imperfections; it made the movie itself more realistic.

Luca- Yes, if you like good movies and Robert DeNiro, yes.

Jimmy- The brazilian DVD copy.. Is in English and good quality?

i believe Noodles was desperately in-love with the girl that's why he did that. that's his last resort, IMO.

That's true, but I still don't like watching that scene.

Great movie, really good. Disturbing rape scene as has been discussed already, but, excellent film.

Yes, the Brazilian copy is really good. It has a bunch of extra features but all the text is in Portuguese. The film itself is in English, because it was originally filmed that way, but it has Portuguese subtitles. The quality is also very good. From my understanding Brazil was the only country publishing that film on dvd. If they make an American Version, I'll still buy it.

i have this on Bootleg dvd. it looks like they copied it from laser disk and put it on dvd format. most of the subtitles are wrong spelling, like "Noodles" they put "Nuro" on the subtitle. but its better than buying a vcd(if they have one) and very much worth for the price equivalent to $2.

Already ordered it on play.com, I think it is the region 1, only £15.99.

Can't wait. I've only ever seen bits before, never managing to capture it on video.

I'll be pre-ordering Narc soon, too.

Geordie, email on way tomorrow (Monday) mate!

I picked it up today...probably won't get the chance to watch it for another week or so...especially since it's almost FOUR HOURS long!

Re: Once Apon a Time in America 6/10/03 - 06/12/03 10:00 PM

I just went by Best Buy for the hell of it and they had it, so I scooped it up. It was 19.99 plus tax and its on two discs. I think the Brazilian version i have is the entire film that this version brags about never being shown in North America. The cover looks cooler, though. I said I'd buy it anyway.

Re: Once Apon a Time in America 6/10/03 - 06/20/03 09:37 PM

Its awesome. I just wish they wouldn't have split it on two separate discs. The second disc should've just been the bonus materials. My Brazillian copy is the whole film on one disc. Though the American version has a better layout, sound, and color. Not to mention more features like the interviews and stuff. Plus various subtitles.
