Fine movie, hoisted by great performances, starting with Pacino and Cazale, as well as the great Charles Durning. Tons of dark humor, too. Real New York stuff. But, as Tony noted, a Godfather it ain't.

Excellent film. My son bought it for me for Christmas (I gave him a little help choosing it as he's only 6!). Typical, it seems every time I buy a movie they show it on TV a week or two later. The same thing happened when I bought "Leon" (titled "The Professional" in the US).

I got it on video. Definitely entertaining. One of Al Pacino's best performances (and one of the films which I thought deserved an Oscar). Anybody see the trailor of John Q (Denzel W., Ed Woods, etc) and Swordfish (John T., Halle B). It really looks familiar huh, hehehe.

I know the same thing happens to me. THough it's usually i'll RENT movies, and they'll be on 2 days later. I asked my library if they had the Godfather Novel, they said no. I went out an dbought the novel, next day, i go to library to pick up Gf3, they RECOMMEND i read the book, and hand me the hardcover The Godfather fom 1969. I thoguht "you bastards, i was here yesterday, and you'd never ehard of it, and now i find out you had it for 30 years!" But the paperback 30th addition is awesome, and it was only 7.99, so it's all good.

Leon, or "The Professional" whatever its referred to is an awesome movie.

I bought this last night on DVD and I watched most of it last night. It's really good. I think I have about 15 more minutes left in the movie, which I'll watch when I get home from work.

Good for you. Hope you enjoy the ending I like the beginning and the part where he knew about the banks trick to call cops (a device used).

I finished watching this movie. It was a really good flick. I was hoping to get more dialogue from John Cazale, though.

It says this was based on a true story. For those of you old enough to have been around when it happened, do you know how accurate the story was?

"Dog Day Afternoon" is indeed based on a real life incident. On August 22, 1972, John Wojtowicz ("Sonny Wortzig" in the movie)) held up a Bay Ridge, Brooklyn branch of the Chase Manhattan bank in order to get money for his lover's sex change operation. Part of the hoopla surrounding the robbery and hostage-taking was carried live on TV. My understanding is that he's out of jail and is now living on welfare in Brooklyn with his mother.

Wow great info. Thanks for the update. Makes you realize how accurate the film portrayed the incident.
