the Clifton Powell thread - 04/03/17 01:05 AM

When it comes to crime films, Powell is the COLDEST actor. So good at capturing the essence of bad guys that he's typecast as that.

The first time I remember seeing him was as the neighborhood crime boss on the tv show Roc.
In this scene, he's developed a bit of a conscience..and the good people in the neighborhood have convinced him to go talk to a young guy who just got sent up for killing another young guy from the neighborhood.

Pinky is definitely up there, this is a cold ass scene if there ever was one

Rollin,

oh yeah. Cutty was ice cold in that scene.

SPOILERS
CASINO & Goodfellas

When we watch films, we make jokes about the films being connected. When Frank Vincent switched sides on Joe Pesci in Casino, we said that it was Billy Batts' revenge.

Dead Presidents & Menace 2 Society

So in the scene you posted, we used to say that Clifton beat up Odog for handing Kane the gun that he used to pistol whip him with in Menace. smile
It's what happens when you drink as much Private Stock and ice beer as we used to drink.

CP has one of the worst stage names EVER though.

When he first came out, we used to call him Big Daddy Kane's brother because nobody knew his name.

Lmaoooo he does bare a resemblance for sure. Too bad they're prob around the same age, a BDK biopic would actually be dope.

Gets, have you heard the "Mogul" podcast about the life of Chris Lighty? I'm a couple episodes in and it's pretty good. Then again, I can't get enough of 90's hip hop stories so I might be biased.

Rollin,

You just put me on to it, thanks. Since Taxstone went down for the count...haven't checked out too many podcasts. Downloading now and will binge listen tomorrow.

Gets, I don't know how far you are in the Chris Lighty podcast but I just finished. I'll leave out details since idk how much you've heard, but all i can say is damn. This guy was really in a tight spot financially and in other ways. I know people have their doubts if he really killed himself or not, and before I heard the whole story I wondered too, but man after hearing all the shit going on in his life at the time I'm leaning towards him doing it to himself. He was definitely right about to experience a spectacular fall from grace and I guess he just didn't think he would be able to handle it, let alone bounce back.

Rollin,

thanks for putting me on the Mogul podcast and for letting me know it's completed. Was never able to download it and did catch the first episode on spotify. 10 minutes into it,I knew that this is something I'm going to keep in the archives.Great, great idea and execution.

Love the part where they are talking about wanting to look fresh but risking your life wearing certain things.Getting flashback memories and laughing while hearing this.

When I find a way to download and listen to the series, gonna bump this thread to discuss it with you. Thanks again

Re: the Clifton Powell thread - 07/18/17 07:15 AM

PODCAST is EXCELLENT!!!!

2 more episodes to go. Chris was mentioned a bunch of times in the Prodigy auto bio, so I was hoping that Mobb Deep was mentioned in the series but that's the only gripe. Mogul is really great stuff.

When people used to shout him out in songs, I thought he was some soft guy..Baby Chris. wrong!

Re: the Clifton Powell thread - 07/20/17 01:41 AM

Gets, glad you like it. I feel you on the Mobb Deep thing, I especially wanted to hear a couple stories about the Tunnel club cause according to Prodigy in his book, Chris Lighty was the guy to know and the only one who could really guarantee that you get in. I also remember Prodigy saying he would give Chris bookbags full of weapons to bring in. Guys were getting buck fifty'd left and right in those days.

I assume if the podcast came out after Prodigy died there would be more about them but I wouldn't want it to stray too far from Chris' story anyway. The best is yet to come with that podcast, I wish they stretched it out for a couple more episodes but regardless, it gets heavy.
