Re: Mob and Organised Crime Movies-THE LIST - 02/17/12 11:02 PM

Yes i think you are right, but i think it shows the real robin hood sindrome that clashes with the mobs interests.

Re: Mob and Organised Crime Movies-THE LIST - 02/18/12 07:35 PM

I think it was in his Booknotes interview for Underboss that Peter Maas said that The Valachi Papers was one of the worst movies ever.

Anyone seen it?

My opinion is that the only mistake in the movie is Charles Bronson(no disrespect)...everything else is perfect!

You said it!
Just awful.

An unsung winner: "Honor Thy Father," a TV film starring Joseph Bologna, Raf Vallone, Richard Castellano and Brenda Vaccaro. Very good.

Witness to the Mob
Chicago Overcoat

Re: Mob and Organised Crime Movies-THE LIST - 02/22/12 03:20 PM

yes "witness to the mob"...last time i saw it was long time ago but i prefer "Gotti"
Posted By: Scorsese

Re: Mob and Organised Crime Movies-THE LIST - 02/22/12 06:32 PM

out of both films gotti and witness to the mob. i think that hbo should have produced the latter. Gotti seemed to pro gotti and made him out tobe some kind of hero. Witness was alot more darker and gritty but was on some shitty channel that didnt allow swearing and graphic violence, Gravano wasnt made out to be a hero in that.

Re: Mob and Organised Crime Movies-THE LIST - 02/23/12 05:38 PM

yes i think you're right but i also think that in "witness to the mob" they made Gravano look a little bit innocent in the story..like he had to do it...it was he's only exit!

Re: Mob and Organised Crime Movies-THE LIST - 02/23/12 06:04 PM

I saw "Chicago Overcoat" on cable. Definitely worth a look but I would not have rented it out right. Frank Vincent is the perfect mobster - not too many actors have "mafioso" written all over their face!

True, though the impression the film leaves at the end is that gravano is a remorceless killer. In Gotti they tried to make it out like gotti was disgusted with gravanos violent ways and that he was some sort of robin hood character, when in reality gravano played an integral part in his rise and also his survival through that time with the threat of getting killed and the car bombing.

3.Empire
4.The Cotton Club
5.Harlem Nights
6.True Romance

Re: Mob and Organised Crime Movies-THE LIST - 02/23/12 07:48 PM

Your right Scorsese, the producers of the movies always add some fiction in their work of their own view or someone elses,as for gotti and gravano...the thing is they betrayed each other.

Re: Mob and Organized Crime Movies-THE LIST - 04/03/12 09:04 AM

1) Snatch
2) Lock, Stock and two Smoking Barrels
3) Layer Cake
4) Rock 'n' Rolla
5) Bank Job (Based on a true story)
6) Rise of the foot soldier (Based on a true story)

All fairly recent British films and all brilliant, the oldest is Lock Stock which I think is probably knocking on for 10 years now (Possibly older?). Bank Job is a great film, a true story about some photographs of the English royal's which were stolen and Rise of the foot soldier charters to story of the 'Essex Boys' who were murdered in a gangland execution back in 1995.

interesting movie called "The Public Eye" from 1992 with Joe Pesci...almost forgoth that it ever existed. Its about a photographer from back in the 40's,took pictures from gangsters dead bodies even before the police arrived and he caught him self in the middle of a mob turf war...nice story

"Billy Bathgate"---> Great book, horrible movie. Seeing Nicole Kidman naked is the only redeeming feature.

"Thief"-->Saw it again recently, a great early Michael Mann flick. Can see some early elements that he used in HEAT. Good realistic potrayal, and loved the heist scenes. Supposedly, Mann employed real safecrackers as technical advisors to make it look more realistic. A true gem, IMO Caan was his usual bad-ass self.

1. The Pope of Greenwich Village. This is what it is like being an Italian-American growing up in NYC. They pinned it. Also a great Book.

2. There are two movies 'The Thief'; I prefered the
latter w/Alex Baldwin in the starring role. Sonny Caen was in the earlier film.

3.On the Waterfront. How could anyone forget it. It is The Mob Movie.

4. Joe Montagna lovers-- 'Things Change' w/Don Ameche.

5. Reaching way back-- Public Enemy w/James Cagny-- The best gangster role ever.

6. Little Ceaser w/Edward G. Robinson. Another knock yer socks off older film.

Bogart, Robinson & Cagny made dozens of organized crime films back in the 1930s thru the 1950s. Also Richard Widmark made a big splash into the genre, though by that time it was being called film noir. Also the French have made alotta gangster films. See 'Breathless', the French film not the Hollywood version. It's the French 'Goodfellas', giving a background of the life of a French criminal Foot Soldier. whistle

I hate to nitpick, but for number 2 its ALEC Baldwin and the films you refer to are Thief (1981) and Thick as Thieves (1999). Dont mind me tongue

And another thing, YOU LIKED THICK AS THIEVES MORE THAN THE MASTERPIECE THAT IS THIEF? I am astonished and heart broken that such an opinion exists.

LOL, first time I laffed all day. Thanx.

I just finished watching 'The Enforcer' w/Joe Pesce co-starring. Also has Frank Vincent in a smaller role, But the kicker was Martin Scorcese's parents were in it. Father is a face in the crowd but Mom has a small speaking role. It's on YouTube. The name is The Enforcer or Mob Enforcer from 1976. Good movie on its own.
