The Sicilian...is it canon?

I know that Michael appears in The Sicilian when he was in exile but is that an alternate story or did Michael actually do those things in The Godfather continuity when he was there?

I would say that since The Sicilian was written by Mario Puzo that yes it can be considered canon.
