Face-Off: Battle of the PINK FLOYD Albums

Face-Off: Battle of the PINK FLOYD Albums - 05/28/06 04:34 AM

In previous elections, we've seen DeNiro prevail, Batman humiliate the Blue Bomber, Leno chin-strap poor Letterman, and now we must decide yet another time-tested intense debate.

Pink Floyd, arguably THE rock band of the 1970s, and easily one of the greatest and most influential for the genre, had a string of great hit albums before the group split up, and of which neither Roger Waters nor David Gilmour haven't done anything worth a damn since then, so ignore that fact.

Even then, despite ANIMALS and WISH YOU WERE HERE being some great albums, the debate among rock fans about which is Floyd's best work ultimately comes down to their two best-selling albums: 1973's legendary moody rock beat DARK SIDE OF THE MOON and 1979's ambitiously over-the-top THE WALL.

However, to quote the never-star material actor Christopher Lambert, "there can only be ONE!"

Fans, you have to decide, once and for all, will it be the album where such tunes as "Money", "Time", and "Brain Damage"/"Eclipse" definately became staple of zen-philosophy, or will it be the album full of piss and vinegar, where we hear the rants at schools in "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2", the anger at isolation in "Hey You", the anger at fascism in "Run Like Hell", or the anger at doctors and rats in general with "Comfortably Numb"?

The Wall is their best, IMO. While Dark Side of the Moon is close, I feel the former tells a much more personal story. Truly an emotional roller coaster, not to mention it may contain Gilmour's best solo work on "Comfortably Numb." And one of the best things on the album, Waters' isolating lyrics.

Out of the facist part of the album though, "Waiting For the Worms" is my favorite.

I've only listened to The Wall once, and it was a long time ago. I'd need to listen to it again to make a fair judgement.

Turi, oh well you know how its quoted right? I didn't get the thinly-disguised hidden French accent right?

Hell, I need to review that movie...and its god-awful sequels...for AndersonVision sometime.

You can check many sections of THE WALL album over at youtube, or other "means" of doing so.......

Then there is the movie of course....

I've always kind of had it out for these albums. they absorb all the attention, and take focus away from other great albums the band had achieved... My favorite will always be Meddle.

As for Darkside and The Wall, it's still a bitch for me to choose. I suppose The Wall is their greatest achievement, perhaps... But I kind of like the laid back psychedelic sounds of Darkside more than I like the hard rock sound they harvested for The Wall.

I can't decide.

A fair point LLC, but again to make for a comparison, its like Martin Scorsese. When pick usually his four best movies, its almost always TAXI DRIVER, RAGING BULL, GOODFELLAS, and MEAN STREETS.

Great pictures, but hell I prefer CASINO, AFTER HOURS, THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST over MEAN STREETS......

So ya, I understand you man.

Wish You Were Here is better than both.

Certainly a worthy point....."Welcome to the Machine" is actually my personal favorite of THAT album, and yes even over the title song itself, which is a classic on its own.

No it is not.

I voted for Dark Side of the Moon, mainly because that CD is so chill to listen to after a night of partying. That CD is godly. I love the Wall, but like Dark Side of the Moon a little more.

No it is not.[/b][/quote]You underestimate the power of Shine on You Crazy Diamond.

Although, I still stand by my earlier statements. I prefer the "underground" music the band released before Darkside, like Meddle and Atom Heart Mother.

Does anyone else feel guilty being a Darkside of the Moon fan? I hate the kids in my school who think they're cool because they wear DSOTM merchandise, due to the albums obvious status in drug culture. I will never wear a DSOTM shirt for this reason. I prefer my Animals shirt.

Oh, and from my expirience, the only song those stupid kids can name off the top of their heads is "Money".

LLC, Ya I know what you mean. Sure "Money" rules, but the best track(s) of that album is the grand finale that is "Brain Damage" followed by "Eclipse".

I do also admit that I quite enjoyed ATOMIC HEART MOTHER as well.

Good list and ratings, DV.

BTW, for those willing to watch something ugly, or see.....in my opinion, not much of a cover....of ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL by the heavy metal group KORN.

Ronnie, don't say Heavy Metal. I think that puts a stain on the genre. Call them the shitty Nu Metal band they are.

Anyway, my favorite DSOTM track is "Time." The lyrics have had a heavy impact on me for quite some time.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desparation is the English way
The time is gone
The song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

You're correct DV, and thank you for correcting my horrid mistake.

Besides, KORN sucks.

first time listening to that cover, i like the way they covered part 1 but part 2 is a little overdone.
