I've seen at least ten different spellings of that one here.

Drives me crazy.

Although, I usually only use this term at work, I always, always have to think when I type, "In lieu of" or is it "In leiu of?" I before E except after C and then I forgot the rest.

Another: Commitment/committment?

My achilles' heal word is "accommodate." I always get tripped up if there are supposed to be 1 or 2 Ms.

My pet peeves for misspellings are:

INCORRECT vs. CORRECT
definately - definitely

judgement - judgment (this is spelled wrong frequently. I get so annoyed when I see it spelled incorrectly on television. There is no excuse on tv)

misspelt - misspelled

My pet peeves are the 2 more simple ones (and I'm sure they've been covered in other threads):

"your" for "you are" ("you're)
"there" for "their" (or even for "they're," i.e., "they are")

The ones that make me have to hesitate and think about the spelling are words like desperate, environment, occasion, and portrayal.

Actually mine are more typos. Strange but true, I make more mistakes in Italian than in English, maybe 'cause I pay more attention to what I'm typing. In Italian I often happen to type "coniglio" instead of "consiglio". Consider that "coniglio" means "rabbit" and "consiglio" means "council". Believe me, "General rabbit" instead of "general council" can be a deadly embarassing typo!!!!

I think that's French, so it's definitely 'in lieu of'.

You're right, it makes me crazy about they're, their, there, your, you're, or people who use apostrophe s improperly. I used to be a prrofreader and it really drives me crazy.

FCUK

Significant or Signifigant.

In the world of Telephone Engineering we place cable in the air, on poles of course or in the ground - buried. Many people in the industry spell it - burried. I would ask them if that is like the cookies - Burry's.
