No order, but do solo artists count? I'll exclude Lennon's solo career.
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Doors
Bob Dylan
HONORS (no order) (two best from each decade, with two solo artists from the 80's, with several people pre-80's)
------------
Neil Young
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Rolling Stones
Black Sabbath
The Cure (80's)
The Velvet Underground
The Clash
The Ramones
Nirvana (90's)
Radiohead (90's)
Metallica (Kill 'Em All-Black Album) (80's)
Steve Vai (80's solo)
Yngwie Malmsteen (80's solo)
Queen
The Sex Pistols
I was gonna add The Pixies and REM but I need to branch out further into their material.

Re: Top 5 Rock bands ever - 12/28/05 06:59 AM
Jimi Hendrix Experience
The Who
Beatles
Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
(I need to mention that only a very few Fifties R&R artists played with their own bands, and none benefited from the electronics and studio techniques that boosted the above bands. The best of the Fifties bands: Little Richard, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Duane Eddy, all of whom toured with their own bands.)

4.) the rolling stones
5.) the velvet underground
