Wolf Creek - 11/16/05 06:11 AM

Hey all,
I went and saw this last night, worth watching for those of you who like gory horror, and was wondering if anyone knew what true events it was actually based on? It all sounds rather Peter Falconio to me, but Ivan Milat is the famous backpacker murderer. Anybody have any ideas?

Wolf Creek
2005, McLean, Australia

Three backpackers, an Australian male and two English tourists, are stranded in the Outback, and take the offered help of a seemingly genuine local.
Effective, confident piece of filmmaking; taking measured turns in subtlety and hard-hitting violence, it is a fine blend of past horrors, while also managing to stand on its own as a psychological and aesthetic treat.

One of the year's best films. McLean's debut feature offers a film-lover's treat of homage, reference, and revitalisation of a genre long in need of some renovation. Like his Asian counterparts, he's showing Hollywood up. Though, unlike the makers of Ringu and Ju-on, he will thankfully avoid being remade, as this isn't subtitled.

How you keeping, Liz? Glad to see you're still around.

Thanks,
Mick

By the way, I've copied and pasted the following paragraph from Sight and Sound's November review of the film:

Quote:
Absurdly, the film claims that it is "based on actual events". In recent years, there have been several extensively reported cases of travellers coming to grief in the Australian outback. One incident McLean has specifically referred to is the death in 2001 of the British backpacker Peter Falconio. His body was never recovered.
The review's author is Geoffrey Macnab.

Thanks,
Mick

I'm keeping really well Capo, thanks for asking. I've finished my degree and taking some time off before I start looking for a journalism related job.
So it is Peter Falconio then. I don't get why they changed the story to two female backpackers. His story is pretty interesting too. I suppose that explains why Ben and Liz kiss for no real apparent reason, maybe it was a hint as to to who the story was really about.
