2005 Gangster Convention

2005 Gangster Convention - 01/18/05 03:58 AM

Just got an e-mail from the show promoter. Apparently he's been trying real hard to find a Hotel in NYC that would accomadate a Gangster convention. Unfortunately many of the hotels within Manhatten would not cut him a fair deal in regards to discount room rates for convention attendees, etc. So he has informed me that he is working on the possibility of holding it in New Jersey, and has Atlantic City in mind. He assured me that he is gung ho on holding this second annual convention, and is working diligently in finding a convenient but popular location for it. I will let you know more as I know more. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Atlantic City hu?? Never been there, but sounds like my kind of town. Are they still talking September???

I've taken more trips this past year or two, than I ever have, so I'll have to see if I can work it out. Please continue to keep us posted on the details DC.

Thanks

Atlantic City has a storied connection with underworld. Might be a very appropriate location.

Re: 2005 Gangster Convention - 01/18/05 02:54 PM

I can't believe that after all of the "come back to NYC" hype we heard after Sept. 11th, no hotel wants to work with him. Perhaps he can try some of the suburbs of NY, like White Plains, which is much less expensive and is a 20 minute train ride to Manhattan. There are a good number of nice hotels there within walking distance to the train station. Although I have heard that Atlantic City is very accomodating because they can't wait to get their hands on all of those potential gamblers (I hear that it's one of the least expensive places to have a wedding reception for that very reason).

Don't know if this question should go on the Vegas thread or this one, but I hear AC isn't as big (not as many casinos) as Vegas. For anyone who's been to both places, how do they compare? Are rooms as reasonable in AC as they usually are in Vegas? And more importantly, are there good buffets? :p I hear too that it's not as safe walking down the street in AC as in Vegas.

The AC streets get kind of scuzzy after dark (hookers, low-lifes, etc.).

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of this convention happening in AC. Can you imagine our group down there? LOTS of places in which to get bombed!!!

Re: 2005 Gangster Convention - 01/18/05 03:16 PM

I've never been to Vegas, but I've been to A/C twice. I've heard it's not as big as Vegas, and I'd believe it. A/C isn't exactly a gambling mecca.

As far as walking there at night, I know I wouldn't. The area around the casinos does not look that safe.

Re: 2005 Gangster Convention - 01/18/05 06:25 PM

AC is not as big as Las Vegas by any means whatsoever. But it still is a fun place where once inside the Casino's you could easily think that you are in a Vegas Casino. As for the outskirts of the Hotels, it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Not saying that I would wonder 4 or 5 blocks away from the Casino at 1:00 in the morning, but then again there is no reason to wonder outside the casinos late at night anyway! As far as having it on the outskirts of Manhatten, that is up to him. But the more I think of it the better it sounds to have it in a place like AC! Oh, and TIS, don't you worry, we'll get you there somehow! I don't know exactly when he is planning to have it being that he hit a snag with the manhatten hotels, but I promise that I will let you know when I know.

Ok, just got an e-mail from my contact in Atlantic City that the Show Promoter has just received a request from the Atlantic City Hotel people asking that he submit a proposal. So at least they are talking.

Re: 2005 Gangster Convention - 01/22/05 05:18 PM

Not yet making any commitments, and just thinking ahead: What airport would I fly into if I were to go to AC??? Newark/JFK/LaGuardia??? I only know that Geoff took the subway to NYC, when I was there (and he lives in Jersey) and Jersey/NCY are very close?????

Geography was never my strong point. :p

Re: 2005 Gangster Convention - 01/22/05 06:20 PM

I would recommend Newark. You would be in Jersey already and you would just jump on the parkway and be there in about 2 hours. You also would not have to fight to get out of NYC.

Re: 2005 Gangster Convention - 01/22/05 06:35 PM

TIS - If you can't fly directly into AC the next best bet would be Philadelphia.

Yes TIS, SC is correct. Philadelphia airport would be the next best thing to flying into AC airport. I don;t know if major airlines fly into AC directly. So Philly is the move. I'll drive the taxi if you need one!

I actually took a bus into the city, and would then usually walk to my destination unless it was bad weather, then I'd take the subway w/in the city itself.

SC is right, fly right into AC if you can. Philly or Newark if not...

Re: 2005 Gangster Convention - 01/22/05 07:44 PM

Well, it's way to early for me to even plan this, not to mention the fact that it's not even definite on this convention (although we could make our own convention I suppose) .

However, that would be my next question. What form of transportation to AC and how far is AC from PA should I fly there?? Since I like to play around a lot on my computer I quickly checked fares and from Ontario, CA to AC I don't see any nonstops, but all two stops for about $100 more than if I flew into Philly.

As time goes on, and if I do go, I'll bombard you guys with tons of questions I'm sure. :p

TIS

Yo!!! Maybe I can see Rocky while I'm in Philly!!

Re: 2005 Gangster Convention - 01/22/05 07:51 PM

TIS, there are plenty of busses from Philly and NYC to AC -- AC wants everyone to come and spend their money!

The converstaion went something like this :

"Hey mang, chu gonna drive a little fasta mang? Cause if chu don't mang, den I gona kick chu out of da door an move ova and take da wheel mang, so chu betta drive a little fasta mang!" { laughing sounds coming from the back seat of the cab } "Wha route chu taking mang, by way of cuba mang?" { now I can hear Geoff laughing his ass off! } "Chu betta get me back to da hotel mang before da focking weekend is ova chu chubato!" { now Goeff & LDV don't know if I am kidding or am serious! But Mikey Montana knows me well and is laughing so hard that tears are rolling down his face! } .....As we FINALLY pull up to the Hotel....." Chu lucky mang, I let chu live anotha day know mang!" { even the cabbie is laughing now. }

I still have nightmares from that loooong ride! I still have NOT gotten into a cab since that trip!

Wish I was born in America (only on this point then!!! Proud to be Dutch, no doubt)...I'm too young to move to this convention...I would like to meet some of you people but that's not possible for me...of course I don't have the money to fly to America and secondly...America is more expensive then Holland....but when I'm older and have money....(and hope that this board still excists) Ill come too!

But for now....drink one beer more for me!

We should have our own over here, but I'm far to unorganised to plan it. And instead of a Gangster convention we could have a Fish n Chips convention at my local, celebrating our best food and drinking plenty of lager.

That is remarkably accurate. The guy WAS LOOKING AT A MAP!!! HIS EYES WERE NEVER EVEN ON THE ROAD!!!!!! Oy. I'm thinking how DOES this guy get his cab around the city? I think we were all HOPING Don Cardi would take over the wheel...

"laughing sounds" from the back seat? Oh, you mean the singing? Or the bad sex jokes and innuendo? You know - Yours Truly, Geoff and um, that OTHER guy...yeah, what was his name again?????

Thankfully, no next of kin had to be notified. I think we came really close, though....close to the butt of the bus!

He was looking at the map, and I was just STARING at him, coldly! . But with the laughing coming from the back seat and the bits and pieces that I caught of the dirty jokes, it was kind of hard for me to keep a straight face with the driver. You, Mikey Montana ( yes, that's his name! ) and Geoff were worried about coming close to the butt of the bus? Chit mang, I waz da one sitting in da front seat and waz closer to it! Chu tree in da back mang were havin a party back dere, all at my espense mang!
How about the Dinner the night before! Do you remember the bus boy who said to you " Are you going to eat that whole steak?
I promise, the next convention we go to, no cab rides, limos only! And I am telling you ALL right here and now, all those who were in Chicago BETTER be at the next Gangster BB get together! NO DAMN EXCUSES! And all those who missed the last one, get your asses there, we'll have a ball!

Considering the weakness of the US dollar vs. the Euro, MM, you probably could get to Atlantic City for next to nothing.
DC and SC are right about Atlantic City: It's no Vegas. But you can still have fun there, if you're careful. One thing to be concerned about: there's a big shortage of hotel rooms in AC. It has only a fraction of the casino-hotels of Vegas, and almost half the rooms are comped for high rollers.

The show promoter contacted me today. Unfortunately no progress has been made with any of the potential hotels. He is still trying to solidify something, but right now it does not look good. He says that unless something breaks in the next few weeks, he may have to scrap the idea and work on something for 2006!

Ok Don Malta, it may be time for you to get to work here and put together our own little Gangster BB convention! What do you think my friend? Possible?
