2018 Dead Pool - 12/30/17 07:09 PM

The 2018 Dead Pool

GOAL: Predict which notable* figures will die on/between January 1 and December 31, 2018, Eastern Time.

Produce a maximum of 50 names, to be PM'ed to me (NOT posted here) before the ball drops in Times Square (NYC) at midnight on New Years (i.e., 12AM ET, January 1, 2018). The BB's default timestamp will determine entry time, but I often post after midnight so the west coast has a little extra time.

*It's assumed that all notable figures will have an entry, or be mentioned in an entry, at Google, Wikipedia or another legit source which you may have to prove.

Rules:

1) PLEASE alphabetize your list of 50 names by LAST name (regardless of profession), either in the form of FIRSTNAME LASTNAME -or- LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME, in *1* column of names.

2) If it's not obvious who the person is for most people, after the name please add why they're notable. For example: "Douglas Fraser, trade unionist" (Sorry, he's already dead). In addition, you may or may not choose to include the person's current age; for example: "Douglas Fraser, trade unionist (91)"

3) If you submit your list days before Midnight, January 1st, 2018, and someone on your list dies before 2018, you should substitute the person with another and resubmit your list (by the deadline). If you do not resubmit your list, and the person died in 2017, the person will obviously NOT count for 2018.

4) a) Thou Shalt Not Kill (anyone on your list); b) criminals subject to the Death Penalty or anyone kidnapped or held hostage in 2017 won't count -- unless they die of natural causes; c) "Dead" means permanently dead, not later revived, nor put in animated suspension, or any induced or natural coma starting before 2018 begins; d) do not edit Wikipedia with false death information.

Everyone's lists will be updated unofficially throughout the year, but year-end audits should be performed to determine the final winner sometime shortly after December 31, 2018. YOU are responsible for your own audit at years' end.

Prize: Bragging Rights for 12 months.

Past Winners:
2017 - Don Marco (15)
2016 - SC (17)
2015 - Sr Vitelli (12)

I honestly forgot that he had a brother. Well, with the recent passing's of his two friends/co-stars last year, and now his brother, he might have a decline in health this year. RIP to Jerry though

Yes, a good pick.

Re: 2018 Dead Pool - 01/09/18 02:42 AM

Sadly, another good pick of mine seems to be declining more. Loretta Lynn who suffered a stroke last year, had a nasty fall recently and fractured her hip. Family says that she is doing well, but that really is not a good sign at the start of the year.

Re: 2018 Dead Pool - 01/11/18 06:32 PM

It's a bummer as he was the last surviving (in this case "surviving" is appropriate) member of the classic line-up of one of my favorite bands - Fast Eddie Clarke has passed...

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/jan/11/fast-eddie-clarke-motorhead-guitarist-dies

I had the privilege of seeing various incarnations of Motorhead about 30 times over 33 years. It all started for me in June of 1982 when Lemmy. Philthy and Fast Eddie played the Old Waldorf. Then Eddie was out of the band but came back with Fastway the following year and played the Cow Palace with Iron Maiden and Saxon. Both shows were outstanding as Motorhead were at one of their peak periods at the time and Fastway had a huge buzz in the metal scene as it was guitar shredder Fast Eddie teaming up with Pete Way from UFO on bass. Unfortunately Pete had left the band early on to form Waysted but the excitement carried on as Fastway's debut album was a scorcher.

Now the classic line up is reunited and along with Wurzel they're making incredible noise on the other side.

I don't have a list but David Attenborough is 91 years old. He seems healthy enough for his age. I don't know how I'd deal with his death. It'd probably involve whisky and some Planet Earth.

I'll throw Robert Wagner in there. I'm betting he checks out pretty quick here before they put together murder charges against him.

In the '60s, Marty Allen was partnered with Steve Rossi (Allen & Rossi). I know after they broke up (and before their subsequent re-teaming), he worked with others, but I don't think any of those pairings were as well known as Allen & Rossi.

Here's an interview from not too long ago that pretty much tells the whole story:

Russell Solomon, founder of Tower Records passed away yesterday. We had a bunch of them here in the Bay Area. The things I liked best were the import section and that they allowed buyers at each store to stock whatever they wanted in addition "big" releases, You could visit three different locations and walk out with different records unique to that location which reflected the buyers taste and what was going on in the local music community.

Well on the subject of Hoover. Herbert Hoover, and Richard Nixon are the former presidents to outlive their wives. Not sure how long Herbert lasted after his wife's passing, but Richard only lasted like 8-10 months after Pat's death. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see George Sr to pass sometime this year.

Bruno Sammartino, an Italian immigrant who would become one of the world’s strongest men and one of wrestling’s most popular figures, has died at the age of 82. Sammartino died in his adoptive hometown of Pittsburgh following an illness, surrounded by family.

Born in Pizzoferrato, Italy, in 1935, Sammartino spent much of his early childhood hiding from Nazi invasion until his mother could get him and his family out of Europe and into the United States. Sammartino set a world record in 1959 by bench-pressing 565 pounds. As WWE noted in its obituary, that put him on the world’s radar, and Vincent J. McMahon Sr. invited him to join what was then known as the World Wide Wrestling Federation.

I so remember growing up in Pittsburgh and watching studio wrestling and all the legendary greats. Bruno was my favorite of course.

I also remember crusher Lisowski, Johnny Valentine, The Mongol, Apollo, Baba the Giant, and Fritz Von Erich. More than a couple of decades later I got to meet Fritz Von Erich when I became the City Administrator of a small Texas city that we lived near. It seems that quite a few relatively young people are dying under circumstances that prompt me to wonder if there's something in the air or water. I wonder if any of those deaths are due to a legacy of drug use when they were much younger.

Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Charles Krauthammer has died, The Washington Post confirmed Thursday. He was 68.

The announcement came nearly two weeks after the columnist and Fox News personality revealed in a Washington Post column that he only had weeks left to live. For most of the last year, he wrote, he’d been recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his abdomen. Though the procedure was initially thought to be successful, the cancer returned and began spreading rapidly.

“This is the final verdict,” he wrote. “My fight is over.”

This was one of the most intelligent people that I ever heard or read. I so enjoyed his comments on Bret Bier's All stars panel M-F especially during the election campaign. He was so cogent and made alot of sense.

‘Old Man’ From Pawn Stars Richard Harrison Dies Aged 77
Posted By: OakAsFan

Re: 2018 Dead Pool - 06/25/18 05:06 PM

It's kind of sad that 77 really isn't that old by today's standards. He'd been calling himself "Old Man" since the show premiered, almost a decade ago, when he was in his late 60's. Just goes to show that attitude and a sedentary lifestyle can be as much of a factor in an untimely death as drug use in the younger years would be, the latter having likely played a role in Anthony Bourdain's suicide.

If I may go back to Aretha for a moment. I read a story that she did NOT leave a will. Isn't that odd for someone with big money? confused Article said she was worth 80 million. Also said she had a special needs child (I assume an adult) who will need help the rest of his life. However, usually the assets are divided among the children first, so I don't think there'd be a problem. Yet I assume relatives could come out of the woodwork right? I'm just amazed that someone that wealthy didn't have a will.

Driving while doing that crap is a bunch of BS. I have seen a number of near accidents involving that, and a few accidents as well. You can't blame just the millennials, but seniors as well. I have seen elderly women involved in car accidents, one on her phone ignoring the red light that changed at an intersection, when North and South lanes started to go already. The other one not paying attention to a right away crossroad, and ran into a refrigeration van.

Heck, I'm old enough to remember when myself and ladies from the office during our lunch break went looking for a copy of the Cosmopolitan, just to see the centerfold of Burt. lolAnyone remember that? We went to a couple different drugstores/stores and they sold out right away. We got to buy one at least. Ha ha. RIP I really haven't followed his career tho in a long time.

Comedian/impressionist Will Jordan has died at age 91. In the 1950s through the 1970's, Jordan was one of the very best mimics to be seen on television, and was particularly noted for having "invented" the impression of variety-show host Ed Sullivan (see photo) that was copied by others, much to Jordan's chagrin.

Willie McCovey has passed. Growing up in SF during the 70s Stretch was a favorite. The man was a true Giant in every sense of the word. He'd been ill for many years but still manged to show up at the ball park quite often considering his health. It's gonna be weird going to opening day and not have him announced smog the living legends. RIP

McCovey made his major league debut on July 30, 1959, with about 1/3:of the season left to play. He batted .354 with 13 homers and 38 RBIs, and received the rookie of the year award. He won the MVP Award in 1969, in a league that was as densely packed with star players as any league has ever been.

Stan Lee
Posted By: Mikey_Sunset

Re: 2018 Dead Pool - 11/12/18 07:35 PM

Stan Lee founder of Marvel Comics and creator of just about any superhero that matters has passed at 95.

These days Marvel Comics is probably best known for film adaptations of their most popular titles such as Spider Man, Iron Man, Captain America and The Avengers. For me and many kids of the 70s/80s it was all about the X-Men and Wolverine. Lee created this team of mutants led by Professor X not just as a vehicle for telling incredible stories but as a way to show the idiocies of prejudice in the wake of the horrors of WW2. It's hard to think back to a time when a movie or TV show about superheroes was a rarity but aside from Superman on the big and small screens, some animated shows, the Wonder Woman series starring Lynda Carter, Spider Man on the Electric Company and a few others you could only follow these adventures in print. And follow them we did. Month after month Lee and the artists at Marvel would keep us mesmerized with fantastic tales leaving everyone on the edge of their seats for 30 days until the next book arrived. Stan Lee pioneered an art form that far exceeded his vision and grew from a hobby for kids to a worldwide phenomenon. RIP & EXCELSIOR!
Posted By: J Geoff

Re: 2018 Dead Pool - 11/13/18 05:01 PM

Too bad about Stan Lee... despite working at Marvel HQ in NYC for a year and a half, I never ran into him (not sure how often he showed up since he moved to CA; I worked on the New Media floor anyway). While I wasn't much of a print comics fan growing up, Stan's touch reached to all media. He was indeed a pioneer and his cameos will be missed in all future films. RIP

Agree, same.... I never thought of ever doing such a list for a game but it just a tracking device for famous deaths.
