Different versions of great songs - 11/24/1510:54 PM

I read this thinking, nah.....there must be another song called "get low"...he CAN'T be talking about the Ying Yang Twins song..but that's actually what he covers... crazy stuff

Some of my favorites are from an earlier era. Here are a few off the top of my head:
Blinded By The Light: Bruce Springsteen - Manfred Mann In My Life: The Beatles - Judy Collins I Call Your Name: The Beatles - The Mamas & The Papas Are You Lonesome Tonight: Al Jolson(!) - Elvis Presley That'll Be The Day: Buddy Holly - Linda Ronstadt Pinball Wizard: The Who - Elton John My Way: Frank Sinatra - Elvis Presley Blue Bayou: Roy Orbison - Linda Ronstadt
The list could go on and on... (But, mercifully, it won't!)
Re: Different versions of great songs - 11/25/1501:33 PM

All I Ever Need Is You (Sonny and Cher) Bye Bye Love (Everly Brothers) Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin (Gerry and the Pacemakers) Eleanor Rigby (Beatles) Living for the City (Stevie Wonder) Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma (Melanie) Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin' (Oklahoma cast score) Still Crazy after All These Years (Paul Simon) Yesterday (Beatles) You Don't Know Me (Eddy Arnold)
Re: Different versions of great songs - 11/26/1504:58 AM
"Sweet Jane" as performed by the Cowboy Junkies with the seductive and forlorn vocal performance of Margo Timmins. It will make you weep.
There was another good thread about cover versions a couple of years ago but I don't know how to grab the url on a mobile device. My browser only displays the domain or I would link it here.
Re: Different versions of great songs - 12/01/1509:58 PM
I love Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" over the original by NIN. Melissa Etheridge "Refugee" - Tom Petty Bruce Springsteen "Trapped" - Jimmy Cliff Aerosmith "Love Me Two Times" - The Doors Southside Johnny "The Fever" - Bruce Springsteen

Ah, you got me there but it's both.
First version (with the string orchestrate) Sid sang, Steve Jones plays guitar. So half of the pistols, lol. Originally on The Great Rock n Roll Swindle.
Later another version was on Sid Sings (the version without the strings). No other Pistols on that version.
The pistols also do a good cover of Stepping Stone by the Monkees, which is sort of funny because they were like the Monkees of punk. Sort of fake, prefab, some couldn't play instruments.
Re: Different versions of great songs - 12/02/1510:20 PM
Chris Cornell - Billie Jean (originally by Michael Jackson).
Even Michael Jackson preferred this version to his original. I think it better conveys the heaviness of the subject matter. Plus Chris Cornell is one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time.

The Pistols where 100 percent real and i think it was only Sid who couldn't play as he was off his head most of the time,, The Pistols are probably Britain most important Band after The Beatles, pity they only recorded one album together but there impact was incredible, but they had shit management..
Re: Different versions of great songs - 12/02/1510:55 PM
They had brilliant management, for his interests (Malcolm's)anyway, for them not so much. He was a brilliant marketer.I don't think I'd rate them as high as you do in the musical pantheon, but I like them.
Siouxsie Sioux is a close friend of my family, ive known her since i was a young kid, and she can tell some interesting Sid stories, especially when she's had a couple of cocktails. She'll have you wetting your pants with laughter.

In the UK,apart from maybe Led Zeppelin there hasn't been a more influential band than The Sex Pistols apart from the Beatles and that is a fact. Without them i dread to think what the UK would be like it they never got together.. The UK was a gloomy place led by Maggie Thatcher and they gave kids hope who had no future after they left School.. They revolutionized music..
Re: Different versions of great songs - 12/04/1510:27 PM
I hope the Aussies on here see this... ACDC , Baby please don't go...I read Bon Scott had 2 bottles of JD and then went on stage and did this for a bet..
Just heard a Grateful Dead cover but The Black Crowes definitely own this song
Chris Cornell's cover of Billie Jean is pretty good
Dude, I listened to Chris Cornell's version three times but all three times I just couldn't bring myself to like it. And I love his voice but have to say that I like MJ's version better. (I did enjoy watching Chris sing though MEOW)
Hey Joe and All Along the Watchtower are definitely better than the originals imo. I want to add Come On Let the Good Times Roll too but I'm not so sure it can beat out the original by Earl King. But it's very close! Such a good song I'm going to post the link https://youtu.be/-7Qii0Qep5Y
Re: Different versions of great songs - 07/10/1611:36 PM
Chris Cornell is no Michael Jackson and I agree MJ's version is better
Dylan even admitted Hendrix owned All Along the Watchtower, Dave Matthews Bands does a good cover but nothing compares to Jimi Hendrix. I never heard Earl King's original, thanks I love finding out about music and artist I never knew before
I am glad you enjoyed watching him lol here is another Chris Cornell cover with his time as lead singer of Audioslave doing White Stripes Seven Nation Army

Thanks for posting the link. You know what song Chris Cornell NAILED, "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley. I've never heard his version until today Here is the link https://youtu.be/9vmv6BUyESg and his version of Zeppelin's song "Thank You" was pretty good too.

But imo no version is better than the original Italian version. When a man can roll his r's and sing with that passion, ooo la la la, it does something to a woman, gives her goosebumps and it speaks to her soul!
You wanna laugh, I saw Van Morrison pretty recently and Sir Tom Jones made a special appearance. He still sounds good for his age. Take a listen. I recorded part of the song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cux69uXetr8

I've seen him numerous times. What he is is a famously inconsistent performer (you can read about it going back to the 70's). If he's in the right mood you'll see an incredible show, if not you'll be sorely disappointed. He's like Dylan that way.
Re: Different versions of great songs - 07/11/1611:30 PM
Ivy, Good version of it better than GNR (not a fan)
Helen, Gotcha I have a bunch of his live shows on cd really like them. I've been lucky enough to see Dylan a few times I always think his shows are great because he is my favorite artist of all time but I can see why people would not like him live

Yes, back in January. Do you live here in Cali? I can't remember. If you do, he's playing the Hollywood Bowl in October. I noticed he's playing in SF and NY too.
I'd have to agree with what Helen said. He put on a pretty good concert but his singing could be better so just drink as much booze as he does and he will sound great That's what worked for me

Well that is awesome, well I have been known to booze it up ay shows so I don't think I would have a problem with that. Though Wednesday I was at a show in Saratoga and dtank only water had to do the responsible thing because I brought my brother, still had fun though
I am in Upstate NY luckily I have family in LA and down state so I have options.
Re: Different versions of great songs - 07/23/1601:54 PM
Phish starts with Lucky and around 13:45 they transition into a cover of TV on the Radio's Golden Age. I was at this show it was my 16th Phish concert since 09

Hey Dude. Saratoga Performing Art Center June, 1978, Saw Crosby, Stills and Nash; July, Poco and America; July, Bonnie Raitt; August, Linda Ronstadt; September, the Marshall Tucker Band. Incredible summer of music with musicians at the peak of performances. Day time boating around Lake George, nighttime rockin' out to the best performers of their time.
Re: Different versions of great songs - 07/28/1612:34 AM
Sounds like a great summer nothing like live music, the sun and a boat, I wish I could have been around for killer line up. My dad always tells me how great going to SPAC was back then BYOB according to him. My dad brought me to my first concert there, Allman Brothers.
Re: Different versions of great songs - 07/29/1606:28 PM
Trent Reznor said Hurt was now Johnny's song, I'm not even sure if he still performs it at NIN concerts.
One song I like that was done by others still had the original performer (well at least one of them anyways) was Comfortably Numb, the live version done by Roger Waters in 1991 in Berlin. Waters did his original part in the song and Van Morrison and The Band (mainly Morrison) did the chorus on the song. It was the version played on The Departed. Van Morrison nailed it.
Re: Different versions of great songs - 08/12/1604:44 AM
And Dixie, you're OUT OF YOUR MIND saying that Van Morrison nails David Gilmour in "Comfortably Numb"!!! And I just saw Morrison in concert back in January and saw David Gilmour in March. So it's not like I don't enjoy Morrison. But you're reaching!
There's NO WAY Morrison nails it lmao Gilmour is the MASTER!!
AND listen to him play his guitar. Man, the guy shreds!! He's like 70 yrs old
(And the ppl who get in my video either talking or dancing around, I don't know. I do know that they were high as a kite, even I got a contact high at that concert.)
Re: Different versions of great songs - 09/02/1606:16 PM
Very true Fergie.
I'd have to say that Thelma Houston really nails the song "Don't Leave Me This Way", previously recorded by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. Good lyrics. Meow. Great song to dance to too. Disco fever
Re: Different versions of great songs - 12/28/1605:20 PM
Ike and Tina Turner, “Proud Mary” (Creedence Clearwater Revival) The Beatles, “Twist and Shout” (The Isley Brothers) The Byrds, “Mr. Tambourine Man” (Bob Dylan) The Clash, “I Fought the Law” (The Bobby Fuller Four) Jimi Hendrix, “All Along The Watchtower” (Bob Dylan) Johnny Cash, “Hurt” (Nine Inch Nails)

Correct. Ding, ding, ding...we have a winner! You win a trip out here to California, 80 degrees here today, Helen. Just bring me a NY pizza and some pignoli cookies and I'll take care of your expenses
Great song. Dusty singing. Words are a bit different but still wonderful.

I LOVE that song. So beautiful/sad. Dusty Springfield's voice is so distinctive.
Isn't it so sad? She has to follow him and beg him to come home. Damn, I can't get rid of my hubby for more than a couple hours. I drop him off at the pizza parlor/ bar but he always manages to find his way home.

So true. The ONLY song I like Dylan singing is Positively 4th Street.
So true. Dylan's 30th anniversary concert, in '93, was a fabulous event. Only time the concert lagged was when Dylan was singing. He was awful. A parody of himself.
Re: Different versions of great songs - 01/07/1712:38 AM
What do you think about Dylan's son? I like some of his music like One Headlight.
I thought of a song that Elvis sang called It's Now or Never which is the Italian song 'O Sole Mio. Lyrics were changed for Elvis. Both versions are fantastic.
Re: Different versions of great songs - 04/24/1712:59 AM
I'm listening to the song Sway which is a version of the Spanish song Quién será? Dino sings it the best. I also like Bobby Rydell's version. And there's no doubt in my mind that if my parents were still alive today I would have been in Palm Desert to see him perform. I bet all the Italians would come out of the woodwork to see him lol Lot of Jersey retirees right near the golf courses over there about 20 mins from the casino
I think he had a liver and a kidney transplant recently. Still sounds good:)
Re: Different versions of great songs - 07/29/1706:55 PM
I was listening to the two versions of In the Light by Led Zeppelin. There is an early version titled Everybody Makes It Through (In the Light) which is on the deluxe edition of the album Coda and the version most of us know which is on one of my fave albums Physical Graffiti.
Here are both versions. Keep in mind that the link to the video I put up of the early version had been edited to make it LOOK LIKE Led Zep is performing the song at one of their concerts.
