Riviera to be Demolished

Riviera to be Demolished - 02/19/15 05:52 AM

In Martin Scorsese's "Casino," the casino interior scenes were filmed at the Riviera. This piece of film and Las Vegas history will be closed this summer and demolished to make room for additional space for the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Oh man. I'm sorry to hear that, but mostly for sentimental reasons cause I stayed there often. I just stayed there last year when I met a couple friends there. All the old casino/hotels are going. frown Seeing all the modern hotels going up on the strip, I can understand why it's being destroyed but it is kind of sad. I really think however, they should keep The Flamingo. That one is so historic and if I'm not mistaken the first casino in Vegas. Then again, I suppose they will always keep the name but perhaps modernize it more.

A shame. That's the first casino I ever stayed at in Vegas.

Flamingo is the oldest still open on the Strip, but it has seen better days (Caesars let that property turn to shit in the last few years). I suspect this is one the properties Caesars is going to have to unload as part of the bankruptcy.

We visited and dined there in '94. Struck me as a real throwback to the gangster era.

Years ago I saw "Legends" there. Actually a couple years later, I went again with some friends.

Also, Riviera had great lounge acts. I remember back in the early 90s, I stayed there and was walking thru casino area. I hear Rod Stewart. I'm a fan so I went to listen by the door (couldn't see). It was an Rod Stewart impersonator. He sounded great.

That next evening we find out the cover is a mere 2 drinks to get in the lounge for maybe an hour/hour & half show. We got in line early and got in. We actually had a whole lot of fun singing along/clapping and of course drinking ha ha. One thing about Vegas, nearly ALL their shows are professionally done, even the impersonators are great!! And for two drinks, I wasn't bitching. smile

For the record a few years later I did actually get to see the real Rod Stewart here in CA 2 times. smile Loved it

The Tropicana, Flamingo, Caesar's Palace, and Circus Circus are the only hotels on the strip left from a different era in Vegas.

Not the first place I stayed in Vegas (I don't recall my first trip much..heehee). But it was the last place. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the history Vegas has to offer. Although I know most places have been torn down, there's some still left outside The Strip.
