Vacation - 06/26/14 09:07 PM

Has anyone gone/ going on any vacations for the summer? If so post where! (Not counting ones given out by SC lol )

Re: Vacation - 06/26/14 10:41 PM

Took a bit of a working vacation at the end of May into early June by attending a seminar in Montreal and extending my stay with my wife. She headed home to her business, but I went to Boston to visit some old law school friends, and my younger son, who had some time off work, flew up to meet me for a couple more days. Unfortunately the Sox were on the road, but we had a lot of fun, had some excellent seafood, and I showed him where I used to live in Newton and Watertown.

With five different schedules in the house for the Summer it's unlikely that we'll all go together on vacation, but there will be a few trips to the shore for us at different times.

It wasn't the summer, but in late May I drove over to Fla. and then up to Pittsburgh to see family. Later in July my wife will take her annual trip up to Oregon to see one of our daughters. They'll cruise up to Alaska. They sometimes then go to Europe. With her gone it leaves me on a vacation of sorts. But I'm always glad when she returns. Otherwise, I don't vacation much.

I know the feeling, oli. The last few years my wife and kids went to the shore for a week. I worked, watched the dogs and enjoyed some solitude.

Nicky,

Nice topic. The wife and I are going on a cruise through the Pacific Northwest and Alaska in August. What about you, you got any vacations plans for the summer?

I like history I had to go to Boston to kill someone. Just kidding

Any way after I did it just kidding. I got some New England clam chowder. It was unvbeliable.

Then I went to their version of central park. I loved the history of the place. It was where people would find out what was happening in the world from other people.

I was fascinated how so many buildings there are considered land marks.

Saw I firehouse that was a land mark that was still a firehouse. They constructed small fire engines for that fire house. I think it was originally for horse and wagan fire engines.

Funny, there was a sports bar I go in to get a drink. All guys in the place they were watching Boston v Yankees. 3 game series Boston won the first two and they were winning the third game. They are going nuts.

No girls there then I realized it was a gay sports bar. Then I told them all boston maybe winning those games now. But they won't be in the World series and theYankees will win that world series.

That was the last year that the Yankees did win the world series.

I live 7 miles from the Atlantic Ocean in South Jersey. Several day trips to the beach, some nice dinners in Atlantic City fulfills my vacation needs.

What's the general feeling in town about so many casinos closing?

It's not at all "glamorous," and it's certainly showing its age anyway. But if the Showboat does end up closing, I'm going to miss it. It's one of the best places to play blackjack during the overnight hours. And it's just small enough to almost feel like an old Vegas strip casino. But things change ohwell .

My daughter did. She has a teacher friend who had a connection. Quite good she said. Atlantic City has some very nice restaurants in the casinos, which I haven't parktaken ($$$), but I have dined at the Knife and Fork several times - excellent. It is an A.C. landmark dating back 100+ years. Great food and atmosphere. Mmmmmm, I'm getting hungry.

Is it worth taking a sojourn to Philadelphia when booking a holiday to New York - because of the proximity?

It's a much longer drive, but if you're looking for a two day getaway instead of one, I'd personally go with Boston. But that's just me. Philly's a fun town, too smile .

We rarely go to Florida during the Summer, but we're going to the Keys at the end of the month. Islamorada, then Key West smile .

Re: Vacation - 07/09/14 03:39 AM

When I was in Harlem. There was this guy people called Highway he owned property in Atlantic city on the beach. Before they developed Atlantic city. He made a fortune selling his land for development.

Any way he was another paranoid. He felt if he left with a suit cases people will know he was going away. Then someone will come in and rob his apartment. So he would put his clothes for the trip in garbage bags so they would not know.

Re: Vacation - 07/09/14 03:53 AM

If you can call this a vacation. We go to Atlantic city for a few days to see a few shows and I like to walk the boardwalk.

Years ago we go to see Tony Bennett we get in at about 3 pm. The shows at 8pm at a different hotel. One thing leads to another and we get into the middle of something. Later my wife says stop we are going to be late for the show. I say yes we will get their don't worry. We never got there smile but it was a fun trip any way.

thanks PB, should be fun. going with 2 of my closest friends since kindergarten have 2 kids same age as me so really looking forward to it. 30 years of friendship is saying something nowadays. this is our first time doing it so hoping to make it a tradition.

Re: Vacation - 07/09/14 02:11 PM

Wow you have friends since kindergarten that is very cool.

I have a friend since kindergarten as well. I remember the first day we met. We were the first two kids in the class room. There is a sliding door big closet to hang up your coats. He puts his coat on hook. There are easy 60 hooks in that closet.

I take off my coat and I take his coat and throw it on the floor and I tell him that's my hook. Then he punches me in my face and we have been friends ever since.

Other than all the gays there you'll enjoy it. Key West is awesome.

And the Rhode Island coast is awesome. I'd love to see it when not under more than 2 feet of snow!

Yeah, but they don't bother you, Dix. I've been to KW close to a dozen times. We always stay right by the sunset pier, and most of the gay spots are closer to the other side of Duval, by the southernmost point.

But if this was October during that Fantasy Fest? Forget about it. All bets are off. Weirdos EVERYWHERE. And I'm cracking myself up by picturing our pal Ivy League in Key West during one of those festivals lol.

I don't understand why guys are so hostile towards gay people. It's less competition for us.

Me neither. They are so placid and laid back. Straight people are much more likely to cause confrontation.

For some reason, I've been content to stay by home last couple years. Last "trip" was to Vegas in September.

I wouldn't mind going to San Francisco a few days OR maybe Vegas again. Prices are extremely cheap in Vegas the summer because it is extremely hot in the summer. uhwhat BUT, at this point I'm okay just staying home. ohwell

Me neither PB. It's interesting though how some Board members will refer to gay people in their posts in such pejorative terms. As Jesus said, the poor and the stupid will always be with us.

But, as TIS posted, I don't feel the urge to vacation. Actually, I never have. Visiting my relatives is about as vacationing as I get.

That's what I'm talking about the festivals. And to the others, no fags don't bother me in the least. I'm married with 2 kids so I could care less what they do honestly.

PB there was some small joint that was a bar but they cooked some food too (talking very small) off of Duval, my parents tried to find it the last time they went a few years ago but couldn't find it again. I wished I could remember the place. Had a killer taco there that the bar hand just cooked up on what looked like a small griddle (talking years and years ago though so I don't remember much). I was young then and scared of half the dudes there but it was the coolest place I went to down there.

I just wished Florida Keys Electric Co-op or Keys Energy would call us down for a storm lol

Oh, I'm sure they do, Dix. And I didn't mean Bubba in a derogatory way. But that's what the locals call each other in the Keys (the men, anyway). And they have a reputation for taking care of their own, which is okay with me. You take care of you and yours first. And unless you're living in a socialist Utopia, that's how it should be wink.

Re: Vacation - 07/12/14 01:22 PM

Well, my wife left earlier this week on her annual vacation sojourn .She met up with one of our daughters in Oregon. They went to the San Juan Islands and then up to Alaska. next week they will venture to Spain, then France and, hopefully, Italy. They don't care for England or Germany.

So, I'm alone for more than a month as I am every summer. What to do? I'll relax, probably spend more time in the pool. The grandkids are older now, so not much to do with them. I'm teaching one class, but it's online. What to do? What to do? Probably alot of reading.
