Re: Adult businesses of old Times Square-pics/stories? - 06/20/14 02:25 PM

My first visit to Manhattan was in November, 1989 on business trip for a convention held at the Javits Center.

I had to "tip" every trade at the Javits ($10-$20 each) to get our electric, carpet, booth delivered, etc. This was already paid for but nothing happened without going to each trade and paying the "tip".

We walked over to Times Square to see it. It was a cold evening, probably in the 40-50 degrees F, and there were girls in their underwear, some without bras, standing outside these places trying to solicit customers. Times Square disgusted me. The place was dirty and smelled. Trash every where, beggars who were aggressive, and nothing but titty bars and pimps.

We went down to Greenwich Village to see some jazz (Maynard Fergueson was playing). As we got out the cab, I saw a guy shooting heroin into his arm while he talked with a mounted cop. I was stunned. I had never seen someone injecting heroin, let alone while that person chatted with a cop.

I came away from the trip thinking the Big Apple was a dump. An expensive dump with really good restaurants. In my opinion, the city has been saved by people like Giuliani who cleaned it up and got rid the place of the crime and graft.

I have seen documentaries about female prostitutes, working in Hunts Point in South Bronx, and Atlantic City NJ.

It was called Hookers at the point.
If you really need to ask the video is not safe for work as expcted.

This is what happened to some of them.

I feel bad for these women.

It did make me wonder who the clients of these prostitutes were, why they had sex with prostitutes, and why any guy would want to get oral sex from a woman while wearing a condom?

There was a funny part where the one prostitute Cindy would dress up like a nurse and people would say, "Hey I've seen you on HBO!"
Her reply, "Yeah, so what? You made me come over to your car just to tell me this?" lol

In those days no one wore a rubber. Hookers and transvestites were all over the lounges and clubs back then.

Best place was plato's retreat 74 street and Broadway Ansonia Hotel. A girl had to take the guys in. So they would pay hookers to get you into the place. Everybody was banging everybody

I have heard of that place. What was it like when you went there? Did you ever see anyone famous, or infamous there?

Did people really have sex with transvestites and not know it was a guy? Or did that happen to you? What's the appeal of paying for sex instead of just actually dating a woman, having a relationship, and possibly getting engaged or married?

Why didn't people use condoms did they want to get STDs? Or is that why there are so many STDs now?

Hey footreads, do remember your first blowjob?

How long did it take for the guy to cum?

I remember walking in Greenwich village and was approached by a guy wanting to give me a blow job. I told him I get blow jobs left and right. I told him I rather have a plate job. I told them I want that, but without the plate. He changed his mind.

Plato’s Retreat opened its doors in 1977. Located in the basement of the famous Ansonia Hotel, an ornate 19th century building where Broadway and 230 West 73rd Street meet, the club operated a “member’s only” establishment which required patrons’ strict adherence to the Club’s rules. Couples could be straight only – no homosexuals allowed. Drugs were not allowed. Alcohol could not be consumed on the premises. Plato’s Retreat featured a pool room, steambaths, disco dance floor, an in-house sauna room, and a swimming pool with waterfalls. It was popular with many celebrities and other “well to do” people – Bette Midler, Sammy Davis Jr., Richard Dreyfuss, and the entire cast of Saturday Night Live were reported to have paid visits to Plato’s. Located in the ultra-popular Manhattan area, it was New York City’s most famous and popular pit of filth – a sex club – which also featured a mattress covered orgy room and 20 “mini swing” rooms for one to three couples.

Originally housing the Continental Baths, a famous gay bathhouse, owner Larry Levinson cleverly ensured that the number of women outnumbered the number of men – couples only were allowed and the woman’s male counterpart was required to accompany his companion. Sexual activity between men was strictly prohibited but lesbianism was always welcome.

My friends and I used to take the subway to Times Square when we were kids, just to walk around. Porn/prostitution was pretty much underground then. Toward the late Fifties and early Sixties, the "sex shops" started to appear. Those were pretty tame compared with what came later, when the Supreme Court in effect legalized porn. That's when most of the old movie houses started showing XXX-rated films. Female and male prostitutes were on the streets, but not really blatant. Then, ca. 1970, one of the NY courts temporarily suspended police busts of prostitutes on a technicality, and they were just all over the place. You couldn't take ten steps without being solicited. By the early Nineties, Disney owned just about everything. Cleaned up, but corporate.

What I remember of Times Square from the Fifties: Hubert's Flea Circus; Grant's Bar (where they served me when I was 15); Romeo's spaghetti joint; the scuba diving store west of Eighth Avenue; the knife shops and souvenir/cheap electronics ripoff storefronts that also sold "nudie" pictures in the back...

I remember the top & bottom less bars. I had to be conscious to cover my drink when a girl danced to close to so nothing alive would fall in smile

Turn bull remember the metropole cafe on broadway Gene Krupa would play the drums there. Then it became a topless joint.

Lots of jazz greats went through the Café Metropole, including Krupa. 52nd Street was the mecca of jazz in those days.

You're not in danger if you just get oral sex. Even if the other person is HIV+, AIDS, or is not on medications unless you have a cut down there you will not get it. That's what gay male friends of mine have said when they told me how they had safe sex with men who are HIV+ or who had AIDS.

You can however get lots of other STDs.

just bought vhs tapes (in those giant cases) and later dvds from times square area

my pron collection was better than most pron sections of rental places

used to dub them and give away the copies

I saw two giggling silly kids almost get shot one time
A big guy wearing an adidas track suit walks in to drop off boxes to the store owner.....silly kids bump into him and laugh it off without apologizing
they were high and still smelled of weed

He walked outside the store and came right back with a small duffle bag

I got the f out of there

That's creepy. I would have done the same. What year did that happen?

Your post reminds me of how before the internet became mainstream if you wanted porn on video you had to go to a sleazy adult bookstore, and buy overpriced videos unless they were on sale. Or go to a video rental place and buy VHS tapes on sale. I was not an adult then so I never rented any videos.

It was between 96-99...it was before everybody switched over to dvd because I remember the oversized vhs boxes.

Years later I read about organized crime being behind distribution of pron in the area and I realize just how lucky those idiot teens or young people were.

I remember seeing the track suit and thinking "hey, it's RUNDMC's road manager"
