NYC Lower East Side Corruption - 03/27/14 11:27 AM

People have had a lot to say about gentrification and so on. I don't think anyone's hands are clean in the big picture. But I also don't think that we can conflate for example, a filmmaker's words, with the actions of certain politicians and developers, that really were based on a certain level of ethnic chauvinism and actually did harm people not in that particular group. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty of course. We shall see. But while the particulars of this story will be best understood by people from NYC or the surrounding area, the general theme is played out in cities across the US.

Lot kept vacant to maintain ethnic balance

Quote:
...The long-ago walk was the first public display of an alliance that became central to the lives and careers of both Mr. Rapfogel and Mr. Silver. They worked together across the decades while climbing parallel ladders: Mr. Silver to Assembly speaker and Mr. Rapfogel to leadership of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, a large, publicly financed charity.

But their long affiliation came to an abrupt end last year when Mr. Rapfogel, 59, was arrested and charged in a scheme that had allegedly looted more than $7 million in kickbacks from Met Council’s insurance broker over the years. He is due back in court in April....
But an extensive review of the archives of four mayors and more than two dozen interviews show Mr. Silver and Mr. Rapfogel diligently working behind the scenes to promote specific plans and favored developers. Mr. Rapfogel made clear that the goal was to maintain the area’s Jewish identity, seemingly at the expense of other communities.

Mr. Silver and Mr. Rapfogel steadfastly opposed any mention of affordable housing, which would have altered the demographics of the neighborhood and put Mr. Silver’s political base in question.

Jewish ethnocentrism....geez I'm so shocked.

"Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty"

The must meet on alternating weeks when the conference room isn't being used by the KKK committee on Anti-Racism.

Off color humor doesn't float in NY? Sounds like a boring PC place. Unfortunately it doesn't float in St Louis either.(...and I KNOW that St. Louis is a boring PC place.)

Big difference between off color and verge of racist humor.

I remember those days when politicians needed their ethnic base.

Assemblymen and NYC council members no longer need to maintain an ethnic base to get votes. People rarely vote along ethnic lines anymore. NYC politics is run by the Real Estate Board and its PAC, Jobs4NY. They pump thousands into their preferred candidates, who are then ingratiated to the Real Estate Board to return the favor.

good article

There was a thread a few weeks ago about Asian land/property owners in NYC area

Some pretty biased comments made in that thread..I said then and will say now.Chinese property owners in the city are NO more racist than the groups that currently own most of the real estate now..

People felt very free and open to express their honest opinions about Asians but in this area think they are a bit more reluctant to even appear as if they are criticizing Jews.

I feel left out of the conversation when they start speaking Mandarin. Plus if there talking real fast, I feellike their hissing at me.
