GOAL: Predict which notable* figures will die on/between January 1 and December 31, 2013, Eastern Time.
Produce a maximum of 50 names, to be PM'ed to me (NOT posted here) before the ball drops in Times Square (NYC) at midnight on New Years (i.e., 12AM ET Sunday, January 1, 2013). The BB's default timestamp will determine entry time.
*It's assumed that all notable figures will have an entry, or be mentioned in an entry, at Google, Wikipedia or another legit source which you may have to prove.
Rules:
1) PLEASE alphabetize your list of 50 names by LAST name (regardless of profession), either in the form of FIRSTNAME LASTNAME -or- LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME, in *1* column of names.
2) If it's not obvious who the person is for most people, after the name please add why they're notable. For example: "Douglas Fraser, trade unionist" (Sorry, he's already dead). In addition, you may or may not choose to include the person's current age; for example: "Douglas Fraser, trade unionist (91)"
3) If you submit your list days before Midnight, January 1st, 2013, and someone on your list dies before 2013, you should substitute the person with another and resubmit your list (by the deadline). If you do not resubmit your list, and the person died in 2012, the person will obviously NOT count for 2013.
4) a) Thou Shalt Not Kill (anyone on your list); b) criminals subject to the Death Penalty or anyone kidnapped or held hostage in 2012 won't count -- unless they die of natural causes; c) "Dead" means permanently dead, not later revived, nor put in animated suspension, or any induced or natural coma starting before 2013 begins; d) do not edit Wikipedia with false death information.
Everyone's lists will be updated unofficially throughout the year, but a year-end audit will be performed to determine the final winner sometime shortly after December 31, 2013. YOU are responsible for your own audit at years' end.

Prize: Bragging Rights for 12 months. Why so cheapo with the prize? Like I always win this thing.
Btw, I re-sent my list taking off Jack Klugman(on my current list as well as last years) who passed away after I sent it to you and I added another name. Is that ok?
Since there really aren't any "conditions/rules" (other than the person has to actually be alive at this point) ,doesn't matter if it's an "easy" pick.
A few corrections that should be removed from the lists:
SC: Herbert Lom died last year. I posted this in the previous Death Pool thread.
Mignon: Dolores Hope died in 2011.
Don Marco: Jack Klugman is gone, but I'm pretty sure the list was submitted prior to his passing.
Also...
JG: By your own definition, I'm not sure Ariel Sharon belongs on the list, as he's been pretty much in a coma since 2006. I do not take the statements of Sharon's son to the press seriously (see Wikipedia bio).
IMHO if Sharon is considered "alive" he's alive. That being said, I don't care what you do. It's not like my "win" will be balancing on any one name. So if you wanna scratch him off, go ahead and if you want another name let me know.
Fore ME, I remember "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window" from way way back and Old Cape Cod comes to mind as well. My brother had a few of her albums. AND, if I'm not mistaken, didn't she have a tv show? (Maybe one of those 15 min variety shows). Remember those?
I found out from http://stiffs.com/ (or http://stiffs.com/stiffs/ for the year) -- they seem to be on top of things, tho I haven't been there much: but, their definition of "famous" is pretty strict...
I'm gonna bow to my consigliere and just suck it up -- most of us had Sharon, and it was my mistake to have included him on my list all this time (cuz of the rules). And I know MY backup will kick it this year, and Sharon won't...
I see everyone Has Hugo Chavez, but there is a chance he is already clinically dead, and on a respirator, heart pump etc., and they are waiting to announce his death for which they are preparing the Venezuelans, in which case he may have "died" last year.

Just saying, how do we know for sure when he 'died'? I mean will they just say 'he died sometime overnight' or will they give an actual date of when he fell into a coma? This is also the same thing with castro.
Thanks Mig, I found this article saying more or less the same thing: That he was one of "Barzini's henchmen at the wedding." Probably a small part(article says it was his first)
With the death of Ralph the Doorman, the only surviving charadters from the Jeffersons are Florence the Maid and Jenny. George, Weezy, both Willises, Mr. Bentley and Lionel are all dead.

The "fake" Lionel is still alive, Klyd. His name is Damon Evans.

Good for him, but I never considered him as legit.
I don't think anyone had her on their list but Pauline Phillips aka "Dear Abbey" passed away at 94. I read Ann Landers more than Abbey but remember for whatever reason being surprised they were twin sisters. RIP
Robert F. Chew, a 52-year-old Baltimore actor and teacher who portrayed one of television’s most unforgettable characters as Proposition Joe on HBO’s “The Wire,” died Thursday of apparent heart failure in his sleep at his home in Northeast Baltimore, according to Clarice Chews, his sister.
Mr. Chew, who appeared in “Homicide” and “the Corner,” as well as “The Wire,” also taught and mentored child and young adult actors at Baltimore’s Arena Players, a troupe he stayed with as his television career blossomed through his work with David Simon. Through the Areana Players Youth Theatre, he brought new talent to the attention of casting directors and coached the team of young actors who played students in the Baltimore City School system in Season 4 of “The Wire.”..
Earl Weaver, one of the all-time great baseball managers, is dead at 82 .
He was one of the colorful characters of the game in the 1970s, who was tossed from more games than anybody in his era. He was very innovative too as he was the first manager to incorporate extensive statistical information into his managing.
Stan Musial, one of baseball's greatest hitters and a Hall of Famer with the St. Louis Cardinals for more than two decades, has died. He was 92.
Stan the Man won seven National League batting titles, was a three-time MVP and helped the Cardinals capture three World Series championships in the 1940s.
The Cardinals announced Musial's death in a news release. They said he died Saturday evening at his home surrounded by family.
Musial was so revered in St. Louis, two statues of him stand outside Busch Stadium. He spent his entire 22-year career with the Cardinals and made the All-Star team 24 times - baseball held two All-Star games each summer for a few seasons.
He was the last of the great holdovers (in my lifetime) from the golden era of baseball. DiMaggio, Williams and now Musial.
Would lou brock be another or not?
Not in my book. I'm talking about the likes of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Duke Snider, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, etc. Brock doesn't fit into that class.
In sports illustrated in the 1960s they show a picture of Roberto clemente with a diagrams of everything that is wrong with him. He even had a curvature of the spine. But he could still hit 330.

Clemente is one of a kind player. I still believe his number should be retired for every team.
I feel like I jinxed him by picking him on my list.
Don't feel bad, I had Musial on my list for the past three years.
I don't think Ed Koch (former NYC mayor) will last the year. I just saw a tv news story about him and he didn't look well at all. I know he's in failing health and I meant to put him on this year's list but I overlooked him.

NEW YORK (AP) — Linda Pugach, who was blinded in 1959 when her lover hired hit men to throw lye in her face — and became a media sensation after later marrying him — has died, her husband said Thursday. She was 75. The infamous New York City crime was detailed in the 2007 documentary "Crazy Love." Pugach, who hid behind dark glasses for the rest of her life, died Tuesday at the Long Island Jewish Hospital in Queens. The cause was heart failure, said her husband, Burton Pugach, who spent 14 years in prison for hiring the thugs to attack his then-girlfriend Linda Riss after she spurned him. He was married at the time, and the heinous attack became an instant tabloid sensation.
Dolours Price, an unrepentant former member of the Irish Republican Army who went to prison for a 1973 London bombing and who recently shook Northern Ireland’s fragile calm by claiming that her orders had come from Gerry Adams, the Sinn Fein party leader and peace negotiator who denies having ever been in the I.R.A., died on Thursday at her home in a suburb of Dublin. She was 61.
Ms. Price, the former wife of the Irish actor Stephen Rea, attracted more public attention than she might have expected in recent years. Since 2011, the police in Northern Ireland police have been fighting in the courts for access to audiotaped interviews that Ms. Price gave to an oral history project at Boston College in which she detailed her I.R.A. career. The United States Supreme Court has been asked to hear the case.
Ms. Price told interviewers that she might have spared herself and her victims had she known that the struggle would end with a peace that left Northern Ireland’s Catholics, in her view, where it had started: under British rule.
“When we starved together on hunger strike,” she wrote in a 2004 essay in Fortnight, an Irish journal, “it was not to ‘move the process forward,’ it was not for seats in a British government.” It was, she said, “to rid this land of any British interference.”
Actually I didn't realize there was a sister still living. 94 wow! I know my parents liked the Andrew Sisters and I remember hearing some of their music. RIP
I figured she was not long for this earth when I read a few months back that she was receiving hospice care and was being made as comfortable as possible.
I still have have a bunch of Andrews Sisters recordings (some on 78rpm), and used to listen to them a lot when I was younger. I thought they were great - one of the very few things my father and I agreed on, musically speaking.
Actually I have her too, Bam & I will split it I guess.
Hey, I have her, too. I should get a hand for that (Hmmm, maybe I should re-phrase that).
Would it actually be quarters then? On another note, I believe that Eva Gabor is by far the prettiest Gabor sister. To bad her grave is in bad condition.
(Reuters) - Chris Kyle, the former U.S. Navy SEAL sniper who was responsible for 160 kills during his career as U.S. Navy SEAL sniper, was shot and killed with another man at a gun range on Saturday, the co-author of Kyle's book said.
A suspect, identified as Eddie Ray Routh, was arrested, according to reports.
Kyle, who wrote "American Sniper" about his military service from 1999 to 2009, and another man were found dead at the Rough Creek Lodge's shooting range Saturday, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, quoting Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant. The second victim was not identified...
The Daily Mail is a UK newspaper that's been around longer than Zsa Zsa - if such a thing is possible.
I see this story is also being carried by other UK newspapers/websites: The Guardian and The Sun.
My old ComputerSaurus can't properly open these sites, but a Google search revealed the news item (from Ali's brother Rahman) seemed to be carried a lot across the pond.
Maybe there'll be something on our local news programs later this evening?
I expect that Chris Kyle was probably politically to the right of where I am. But that is no reason for political opponents to use the occasion of his murder to make snarky comments about "no tears for a mass murderer" or "live by the sword, die by the sword" or calling him "scum". There are American soldiers who are alive today because of actions he took. And he died trying to help another veteran.
Something is really wrong in the American politic when someone's death is occasion for political gotcha or insults. Right or left, it's not the thing to do.
The Troggs frontman Reg Presley dies at 71 Feb. 4, 2013, 5:11 PM EST
The Troggs frontman Reg Presley has died a year after retiring from music to concentrate on battling lung cancer. The "Wild Thing" rocker, 71, died at his home in Andover, England on Monday.
Presley's daughter Karen tells WENN, "He passed away peacefully at home, and myself, my brother and our mother were with him. We're absolutely heartbroken." Presley was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of 2012 and announced his retirement in a post on The Troggs' official website. He wrote, "As you all know I was taken ill whilst doing a gig in Germany in December. During my stay in hospital tests showed that in fact I have lung cancer. I am receiving chemotherapy treatment and at the moment not feeling too bad.
"However, I've had to call time on The Troggs and retire. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the cards and calls and for your love, loyalty and support over the years." As the leader of The Troggs, Presley enjoyed success throughout the 1960s with songs like "Wild Thing," "With a Girl Like You" and "Love Is All Around." He had a career rebirth in the mid-1990s when Wet Wet Wet's cover of "Love Is All Around" spent 15 weeks at the top of the British pop charts.
Presley was born Reginald Maurice Ball in Andover in 1941. Aside from being a musician, he also made a name for himself as an avid alien researcher who specialized in crop circles and signs of extra-terrestrial life on earth.
Oh yea, I remember The Troggs, though I wouldn't have remembered who the lead singer was. I have both "Love Is All Around" & "Wild Thing" on 45s (somewhere in MI). I did like (tho forgot about it, til I saw it in the post), "With A Girl Like You." The words/melody immediately popped in my head.
Legendary jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd died earlier this week at the age of 80, but news of his death was only just confirmed.
Amoeba reports that Byrd's nephew, Alex Bugnon, confirmed via Facebook that his uncle died on Feb. 4, adding that for an unexplained reason other family members were trying to keep the news of his death private.
"I have no more patience for this unnecessary shroud of secrecy placed over his death by certain members of his immediate family," wrote Bugnon.
Byrd was born in Detroit in 1932, and was already an accomplished trumpeter by the time he finished high school. He later went on to play in a military band during his term in the United States Air Force, and then obtained a bachelor's degree in music from Wayne State University and a master's degree from Manhattan School of Music.
His career began when he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, as a replacement for Clifford Brown, in the 1950s, and formed the fusion group The Blackbyrds in the early 1970s. According to Amoeba, Byrd was a "one of a kind trumpeter," who was known not just for his work in jazz, but also in R&B, soul and funk music, and it was his ability to transcend time and genre and remain relevant that sets his work apart from others.
Rick Huxley, who played bass in the '60s group The Dave Clark Five, died February 11 at age 72. While no official cause of death has yet been announced, Huxley suffered for years from emphysema brought on by heavy smoking. This leaves drummer/leader Dave Clark and guitarist Lenny Davidson as the only surviving members of the group.
Legendary British makeup artist and designer Stuart Freeborn passed away February 5 at age 98. Largely self-taught, his career spanned more than half a century. He designed makeups for Oliver Twist (1948 version), Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, the original Star Wars trilogy, and countless others.
Aww, I use to love the Dave Clark Five (or at the time DC5). Mike Smith died just recently (a year or so?) didn't he or is time just flying by so quickly it seems like it? Anyway, sorry to hear it.

I guess time is flying by all too quickly; DC5 lead vocalist Mike Smith died February 28, 2008 at age 64 following a back injury - just two weeks before the group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Denis Payton died December 17, 2006 at age 63.
Here is a March, 2008 photo of (l. to r.) Lenny Davidson, Dave Clark and Rick Huxley at the induction ceremony.
I really liked their music, too. Liked it a lot. The really frustrating thing was that for a great many years, Dave Clark (who owned the rights to everything) refused to re-release any of their music to new audiences. Not until just a few years ago.
RIP Tony Sheridan. About three years ago he responded to one of my emails. Nice guy. An author published a book claiming that Lennon had made a pact with the devil and that Lennon confided this with Tony Sheridan. I already knew this was rubbish, but wanted Sheridan's take on the story and he confirmed that it wasn't true at all.
I know she was a country western singer but i really only knew her from celebrity rehab. She was on it 2 different seasons. Her boyfriend and father of one of her kids killed himself a couple weeks ago according to TMZ. But McCready has been a mess for years now, in and out of rehabs and mental hospitals i believe.
I remember Franklin mostly from the show One Day at a Time with Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli. Hard to believe Phillips is still alive with the WILD lifestyle she had.
Yea, I just heard this a couple days ago. They had a segment of an interview on the radio Sunday. I didn't remember (or if I knew I forgot) that Smokey's first wife was a part of the Miracles, at least in the beginning.
Oh yea, I remember The Birds & The Bees. Very catchy tune. I might be wrong but I think it was Akens only hit as a solo artist. I see by the article he performed in several groups before he went solo.
"Mr. Chavez, let me show you your suite. Your suitemates, Mr. Mao, Mr. Stalin and Mr. Hitler are here, and we've reserved that extra bed for yoour good friend Mr. Castro."
Looks like actress Valerie Harper (best known as 'Rhoda' on the "Mary Tyler Moore" show) will be joining the list this year. It's being reported that the 73 year has inoperable brain cancer and may have less than three months to live.

I am so sorry to hear that. Can you imagine? Bad enough knowing it's terminal but 3 months is NOT long at all. My God,how do you deal with and/or plan for your last 3 months? Valerie says she's not thinking of dying. She's thinking of living. Boy, great attitude. I don't think I could do it.
Anyway, her Rhoda character is one of my all-time favorite tv characters.
Former WWE manager Paul Bearer has died at 58. Managed many pro wrestling personalities from Vader to Kane to Mick Foley, but he's most memorably linked to the Undertaker. Outside of wrestling he was a licensed, practicing mortician.

With her and Bonnie Franklin gone, the whole 70's CBS comedy lineup is dying off. Is Alan Aldo next?

Rest in Peace.
RIP, i was a fan of WWF in the early 1990's, so tacky though, when you look back at it..
Stage and television actor Malachi Throne died March 13 at age 84. He was well-known for his appearances on TV shows such as "Star Trek" (OS and TNG), "Batman" (as False Face), "Mission Impossible", "Outer Limits" and countless others. He also had a recurring role on "It Takes A Thief," as well as voicing many cartoon characters.
The name sure didn't ring a bell but the picture did. I know him best as Robert Wagner's boss on It Takes A Thief. I always watched that show. I really don't know him from the other shows. RIP
Any of you crepe hangers have Valerie Harper. People magazine has her on the short-timers list.
Yes - SC posted the info back on March 6:

Harry Reems, star of legendary pornographic film "Deep Throat," has died, according to a self-described close friend, Don Shenck, who posted a personal obituary on a message board Tuesday.
Oh, I don't know about that. But, I hadn't heard anything about him in ages; from what I remember, he left the porn business years ago and started a new life for himself. He'd been out of the public eye for quite a long time.

You can rest easy. He appears to be looking a lot better lately.
Actor Richard Griffiths, who starred in the Harry Potter films and Withnail and I, has died at the age of 65 after complications following heart surgery.
Wow, I just read yesterday that his cancer came back and now today he's dead? Poor guy. I really felt sorry for him. Losing his jaw, his cancer really really left him unrecognizable. I use to watch Siskel/Ebert a long time ago. Sorry to hear it. RIP

I didn't even knew his cancer came back. It's just sad that years ago Siskel died from a long battle with brain cancer, and now Ebert. I really hope a cure is found.
Just the other day Ebert announced he was semi-retiring from reviewing movies because of a cancer he needed to get operated.
This really bums me out. Loved his old show with Gene Siskel back in the day, they (along with Ebert's reviews) help expand my cinema vocabulary beyond mainstream popcorn into foreign and arthouse movies. Alot of cinemaphiles today are really feeling his loss hard. Always admired how enthusiastic he was about movies, popcorn and arthouse. In general not elitist or populist, a lesson that most movie critics (professional and on-line amateurs) need to learn badly.
If there is an afterlife after all, hopefully he and Siskel are getting caught up on the movies they both didn't get to debate since Siskel died. Hopefully they'll argue too.
Siskel died ages ago, i'm not sure when exactly though.
I remember there was some nationwide scandal between the two of them being gay or something awhile ago
I honestly think that would be the opposite. It seemed like they hated each other when they would be on a talk show or anything you can find that wasn't there show. Then again, they did fight like a married couple.
I am incredibly saddened by this news. I didn't always agree with his reviews, but he told it like it is, and I respected the hell out of him for it. The world of cinema has lost an icon. Rest in peace.
There have been a bunch of passings recently that should be noted. Perhaps I'm showing my age, but nevertheless:
Actor Milo O'Shea died April 2 at age 86. He appeared in Ulysses, Mass Appeal, Theatre of Blood, The Angel Levine and many other films.
Artist Bob Clarke died March 31 at age 87. If you were around for Mad Magazine's "Golden Age," then you would certainly know the name.
On the subject of artists, Carmine Infantino died April 4 at age 87. He was an illustrator of Batman and The Flash back in the 1960's, as well as being an editor for DC Comics.
Ruth Prawer Jhabvala died April 3 at age 85. She was a noted novelist and screenwriter (Howard's End, A Room With A View).
Spanish film director Jesús Franco (aka Jess Franco and many other pseudonyms) died April 2 at the age of 82. Probably one of the worst directors in the history of low-budget and exploitation film (IMO), he made a number of films with Christopher Lee, including several later entries in the "Fu Manchu" series, as well as the 1970 film Count Dracula (arguably one of his best).
And finally, if you live (or have lived) in the NYC area, and are of a certain age, then you may be familiar with the name of Bob Teague, who was (in the 1960's) one of the very first African-American news anchors on television. He worked for NBC for many years. He died on March 28, at age 84.
Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher dies following a stroke, her spokeswoman confirmed. Britain's only female prime minister, Thatcher served from 1979 to 1990 as leader of the Conservative Party.

Exactly what i was thinking but i wasn't alive when she was PM. RIP
They are making her out to be some kind of hero, but she was hated in the North of England as she privatized a lot of companies and made a lot of people jobless..
Meryl Streep made a flick with Roseanne Barr? I have no memory of it, thank God. Maybe it is a form of PTSD. And while we're at it that abomination she made with Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin was nothing more than her collecting a paycheck.
But back to the topic, I remember being in the UK a couple of times during the Thatcher years, and while she was controversial, it is also fair to say when she took over the country was paralyzed by strikes, and overall "malaise" to use a term associated with a far weaker Western leader of the era. For all her harshness, she probably saved the UK from becoming a third world country.
The satire magazine "Private Eye" ran a brilliant satire every week which was a fictional diary of Denis Thatcher, her husband.
The Yahoo story said she had been in a coma for years ((I didn't know that). The family chose to take her off life support.
I was about 7/8 during Mickey Mouse Club and she was obviously the most famous Musketeer. As a matter of fact, her first name was very popular. One of my 2nd cousins had her named legally changed to Annette. Well, her actual birth name was "Illuminata" and she just didn't like it. Annette was so popular during that time, it inspired her new first name.
I use to go see all those lame Beach Party movies too, back in the day. Was fun then tho.
The Yahoo story said she had been in a coma for years ((I didn't know that). The family chose to take her off life support.
Hmmm, I didn't know that, either. If true, I guess you won't get credit for it -- but I have yet to confirm the coma. Even wiki doesn't mention it.
In fact, I don't see it mentioned in the Yahoo article either.
Geoff, I went back to copy/paste and I don't see it now either. I KNOW I didn't just make it up. Either, it wasn't the Yahoo article OR is it possible they edited it? I double checked before I mentioned it here. Hmmmmmmm Don't think I'm that wacko.....but who knows.

I know she had MS for years, but hear no reports about her being in coma. I think her husband let cameras in there home two years ago, but not positive on the date. She might have been in a coma for a month or less, but highly doubt years.
Honestly, I have no clue on what a MS coma is. I have looked up MS for years, but never heard of that. I think that because the MS has progressed so bad in her that she couldn't communicate anymore. I also read that her eyes were responsive and knew what was going on.
It kind of makes sense because if she was in a regular coma, her family would have let her die years ago. She is tough and I hope she will will be remembered for that. RIP
I agree with BAM -- according to Extra, "she lost the ability to walk in 2004 and to speak in 2009." I guess that's an "MS Coma" but for our purposes, I won't count it as a coma unless I hear something definitive.
I don't think he ever recorded under his own name as leader. But he shows up on a long list of other people's recordings.

Hugh McCracken, a virtuoso guitarist who was in such demand as a studio musician that he could afford to turn down Paul McCartney’s invitation to join the band Wings in 1971, died on Friday in Manhattan. He was 70.
[S]he won the big arguments. She argued that inflation was a disease of money that could be cured by controlling the growth of the money supply alone, without suppressing incomes. During her premiership, inflation fell from a high of 27 percent in 1975 to 2.5 percent by 1986.
She believed that the political power of British labor unions had strangled enterprise and placed the country at the mercy of unelected barons. When she removed the legal immunities that protected unions from the financial consequences of their actions and overcame a yearlong strike organized by the hard-left leadership of the coal miners’ union, the employee days lost to strikes each year fell from 29.5 million in 1979 to 1.9 million in 1986.
She said that taxes were too high and brought the top rate down from 98 percent to 40 percent. She declared that the state should not be running British business and led the world in “privatization”—a word she found ugly but a concept she loved—selling off airlines, airports, utilities, and phone and oil companies to the private sector. In every case, her critics said that it could not be done. Yet, for better and for worse, she did it.
I say taxes for rich should go up, but come on, 98 percent? I think a leftie in the US would settle for 40%. I think left and right in the UK and the US have different scales.
Despised her. Ruined the heavy industry and manafacturing in this country, also privatised everything so her and her cronies could make plenty of money whilst the working class lost everything. I know that in the old mining communities yesterday they were having parties to see her off!!!
And in breaking news i have just heard that even though Thatcher has only been in hell a day, she has already shut down all the furnaces and privatised sin!!!

She was the epitomy of decency despite sexually snied remarks made about her when she was Mickey Mouse Club member.
It was that Cubby who started those rumors, wasn't it?
Was Cubby the drummer for the Carpenters for a time in the 70's?
Well among all the mousketeers, she was the most ....developed...shll we say.
I know she was close friends with former mousketeer Sharon, and also she has a thing going on with Paul Anka for a while.
Cubby did play drums for the Carpenters, and of others, and I think was a session musician in LA for a long time. Don't know what happened to him. Bobby, a goofy looking tall guy was on Lawrence Welk back in the 70's.
Does anyone know what became of the other original mousketeers?
I know she was close friends with former mousketeer Sharon, and also she has a thing going on with Paul Anka for a while.
The song "Puppy Love" was written by Anka to woo her. True story.
But I don't understand that one. And I say this as a secure heterosexual male: Wasn't Frankie Avalon much better looking than Paul Anka? I mean, Anka went bald at twelve years old .
This is reaching waaaay back BUT does anyone remember Annette's solo song "Dio Mio?" Don't know why, but that song flashed thru my mind just now.
Here you go, Tis. It comes on at 14:56 into the video. I couldn't find it alone, only as part of the full album (which was unfortunately one of the corniest odes to so called Italian music ever produced ).
That's the one but I remember the English version which was played on top 40 radio. Another Annette song off the top of my head, Pineapple Princess. If I'm not mistaken my sister and I actually had the first "Beach Party" soundtrack.
Test-tube baby pioneer dies, aged 87 Professor Sir Robert Edwards, whose work led to the world's first "test tube baby" in 1978, dies at the age of 87.
Winters was THE true comic genius of my lifetime. The only one who could even compete with him for that title is Robin Williams. Watching the two of them go off on a roadtrip while performing was an immediate flashback to the '60s for me.
IMO, Winters stole the movie, "Mad Mad World" and his tv roles had to be diluted for the medium but he was always fun to watch, and I will miss him.

Indeed! Robin Willams is pretty darn good, but still falls behind Winters. Do you remember the Mork & Mindy episodes that teamed those two. It wasn't quite the improvisation or comedic fest that it was expected to be. But by then Winters was approaching 60 and the sitcom environemnt wasn't meant to showcase that duet.
Damn, I really enjoyed his performance in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. As far I know only a few are left from that great movie. Sid Caeser, Micky Rooney, and Jerry Lewis to name the ones that I know for sure.
Poor Jonathan. RIP and thanks for the laughs. As fun as he was to watch, he was a very sick man, and was institutionalized twice for severe depression.
Pat Summerall died recently. Many remember him as the play-by-play announcer teamed with John Madden for CBS and later FOX. But before that he gained his fame with Tom Brookshire in the 60s and 70s. I always appreciated his understated style of calling a game, which is now swept away by the ESPN method of being loud and never shutting up just in case you might say something insightful by accident.
I'm sorry to hear this. I saw him play once in an Ann Arbor club. He was kind enough to answer a few questions after the show. He had hands like catcher's mitts. His little finger was longer than my middle finger. Really a great guitarist and interpreter. Richie Havens Dies

NEW YORK — Richie Havens, the folk singer and guitarist who was the first performer at Woodstock, died Monday, his family said. He was 72.
Havens died of a heart attack, the family said it a statement. Further details on his death were not immediately disclosed...
Actor Allan Arbus died April 19 at the age of 95. Arbus was best known for playing psychiatrist Maj. Sidney Freedman on the TV series M*A*S*H* in the 1970's. In his younger days, he was a well-known photographer, working with his ex-wife Diane Arbus.
RIP Sidney Freedman. He was one of my favorite recurring characters on M*A*S*H*.
The character Sidney Freedman, as portrayed by Arbus, was one of my favorite tv characters of all-time! He was smart, compassionate and best of all, he was as funny as the rest of the show's main characters.
Lesser known, Frank Bank, who played "Lumpy" on "Leave it to Beaver" died last week.

This one slipped by me. I was a Richie Havens fan from his first album "Mixed Bag". If anyone wants a classic retro folk/blues album, this has to be in your collection. I saw Richie in concert probably in 1970/71 at Univ. of Scranton. Fantastic. A troubadour.
Ray Harryhausen, a wizard of special effects in movies, died at age 92. His effects made the movies fun and I fondly remember the hours and hours that I spent watching his films (including the "Sinbad" and "Jason and the Argonauts" flicks of the '60s).
I know TIS loved those movies, too.
Below is a four minute video of most of his creatures (from chronological order starting with "Mighty Joe Young" in 1949):
I wouldn't have known his name SC, hadn't you mentioned it a couple years back but you're right I LOVE those movies, especially Sinbad and Jack the Giant Killer(both of which I purchased thru Amazon).
Danito, me too. Down the street from us, when I was a kid, was a local movie theater that showed two movies (not new releases) for 25 cents. I'd beg my no imagination sister to go see Sinbad with me. She'd complain all the time, but went with me. I must have seen it a least a dozen times as a kid.
A couple years ago I purchased it on Amazon. When I next visited MI, I told my sister I had a special surprise for her and made her watch it again for old time's sake. She couldn't believe I actually purchased the movie. Ha ha
Remember this..."From the land beyond beyond; from the world past hope & fear: I bid you Genie now appear?"
Don't know why I loved it or why I still remember that line, but I do.

I've seen it at least 15 times and know the script almost by heart (although just the German version). I bought the DVD, but it's one of the movies that don't work on a TV screen.
Frank Lautenberg just died. He was the last surviving World War II vet in the Senate.
Something like this makes me feel old. When I was a kid I remember hearing about Civil War veterans celebrating a birthday. There are none left today (obviously) but now it's becoming increasingly rare to find a WWII vet alive.
Well you have seven or eight years on me, SC. But I know EXACTLY what you mean. Back in the '60s and '70s I remember seeing World War 1 guys getting together for talk shows or even parachute jumps. And they're ALL dead now .
I know that there are no known living American veterans of World War I, but can't be certain that's the case around the world.
My grandfather, who fought in WWI, died in 1969 before I turned 5. While in France he carved his name high up in the EiffelTower. When his oldest son, my uncle, made it to Paris in WWII months after he took part in the Normmandy Invasion, he followed his father's directions and found his name. My uncle then carved his name under his father's.
RIP Deacon Jones, one of the best defensive players to ever play in the NFL. Was part of the LA Rams defensive line known as the "Fearsome Foursome". Just a great player.
Deacon was truly one of the NFL' all time greats. Like all the rest of that era, never tried for murder or arrested for domestic battery or DUI. Though I'm a Steelers fan, thanks for the memories Deacon.
Wow that's a name from the past. I know he was a sports person but couldn't tell you what sport/team. YET, I do remember the knitting incident. AND if I am not mistaken, wasn't Rosie the one who got the gun from Sirhan Sirhan when RFK was shot?
All correct, Tis. He grabbed the gun and subdued Sirhan Sirhan.
Yep Rosie served as one of RFK's body guards. When the motorcades went up and down the LA streets Rosie would hold Bobby in the car so the fans could not pull him out of it as a result of their enthusiasm.

Theres a picture of Greer holding Kennedy around the waist while RFK was shaking hands from a car with his supporters. Looked like they were having a tug of war with Kennedy as the rope. Can't find the pic but Rosie was always right behind or next to kennedy during that campaign in 68.
Also RIP Joey Covington who played drums for the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. He was killed in a traffic accident on tuesday.
I didn't know (or I fogot) that Greer was an actual body guard of RFK. I thought he just happened to tackled Sirhan.
Sorry to hear about Jefferson Airplane drummer tho I can't say I'm familiar with members of the group except Gracie Slick.
Esther Williams I remember from way back as a kid, we'd watch her movies on the late show many times. The title that comes to mind is "Bathing Beauty." She was married to Fernando Lamas and is the mother of Lorenzo Lamas who was in a tv show a while back that I watched but I can't think of the name of it now. RIP Esther Williams.
Richard Ramirez aka The Night Stalker. He died of natural causes and was 53.
Personally i hope he's burning in hell.
Wow, really? I'm surprised I haven't heard it.
I'll never forget the atmosphere at that time. We lived in Orange County and although most all of his crimes were in L.A. area, one of his murders was in Orange County. It was dead of summer, hot and with no air. My husband worked nights, and I was afraid to sleep with my windows open (that's how he was entering homes, thru open windows), let alone in my bedroom, so I slept on the couch. I actually had a vacuum cleaner part ready to attack just in case.
I'll never forget the applause of the crowd when he was captured. As we watched on tv, we see his battered/bandaged head from crowd attacks, as he was guided in the cop car.
The guy was downright creepy!!!
TIS
Not that great of a picture but only one I could quickly find:
Everybody will remember him for THE SOPRANOS, but honestly his small (but memorable) part in Tony Scott's TRUE ROMANCE is what comes to my mind. He was also fun as the sadistic prison warden villain in THE LAST CASTLE.
Fun Fact: He was supposed to play the FBI agent character in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN originally.
I was just gonna post same link Bam. OMG!! I can't believe it. I am so sorry to hear it. Only 51. Wow, what a shock and a shame.
TIS
A real shock and just sad. I was hoping it was a stupid internet hoax, but usually they involved a ski accident or something stupid along those lines. RIP
Honestly I never knew any of his work until "The Sorpanos". If I am not mistaken he had a role in Brad Pitt/Julia Roberts, "The Mexican." He'll always be Tony Soprano to me though.
I was always hopeful that they would make at least one more HBO 2 hour Soprano movie, but there is only one Tony Soprano, so I can't see that happening.

For some reason, for me, some of the most fun I've had posting here on the BB was during The Sopranos days. Every Sunday night that thread was a fire. We ALL had fun posting. Partly because it was such a unique show, and as BBers, it was right up our alley, so to speak.

Aside from the fact that he was overweight, does anyone know if he had a history of heart problems?

He pretty much enjoyed his food. Sadly the only way he would have stopped was going to be from surviving a heart attack. Richard Castellano died the same way at age 55. When you have food and not knowing that your body slows down when you age just makes a ticking time bomb for your heart.
Thanks Camarel. I was always disappointed in the series finale leaving it up to the audience to make conclusions. I do take issue with this article:
His character died in the season finale — but the audience never actually sees the moment of his death.
Say what????? I'm SURE we had this discussion on the series finale BUT I was the odd ball out. I never believed Tony Soprano died. Oh, he did but we didn't actually see it." Hu? LOL
Ok, that's another topic isn't it? BUT that was the fun part of this show. So much to discuss. I DO think it is one of the greatest, if not the greatest tv show ever.

I always thought it was obvious with that "it all fades to black" line that Tony died. I think they should of shown the Members Only Jacket guy coming up behind Tony, pulling the gun and putting it at the back of his head and then faded out to black without hearing or seeing the actual gunshot.
Maybe thats just the way i would of liked to have seen it end, but i do think Chase had him dying.

I personally think he died too, but it's surprising that Chase hasn't said it yet since he has revealed what happened to the Russian and other things from the show.
It is hard to imagine anyone but Gandolfini in the role but hey, never say never. Anything is possible I guess.
TIS
I really doubt they would replace the role of Tony Soprano unless they want to pull a Godfather Part II and have somebody play as the younger Tony.
The only way they could do that imo is if the story centers around Johnny.
I always liked those flashback seens with Johnny Soprano, a young Junior and Olivia. I liked when Olivia said she wanted to stick the fork in young Tony's eye.

Sheesh,... I'm still kinda beside myself. He was on my must-meet list. And it's kinda scary that he wasn't that much older than I am. Makes me think that it can happen to anyone, that poof! you're gone.
Proves once again that grudges and all other worldly B.S. is just that. Arguing is fine, not everyone can agree. But holding grudges for weeks, months, years, decades!, can really backfire.
It wasn’t until 1958’s “Little Boy Blue,” a record inspired by the homiletic delivery of the Rev. C. L. Franklin, that Mr. Bland arrived at his trademark vocal technique.
“That’s where I got my squall from,” Mr. Bland said, referring to the sermons of Mr. Franklin — “Aretha’s daddy,” as he called him — in a 1979 interview with the author Peter Guralnick. “After I had that I lost the high falsetto. I had to get some other kind of gimmick, you know, to be identified with.”
The corresponding softness in Mr. Bland’s voice, a refinement matched by the elegant formal wear in which he appeared onstage, came from listening to records by pop crooners like Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett and Perry Como.
Just as crucial to the evolution of Mr. Bland’s sound was his affiliation with the trumpet player and arranger Joe Scott, for years the director of artists and repertory for Duke Records in Houston. Given to writing brass-rich arrangements that built dramatically to a climax, Mr. Scott, who died in 1979, supplied Mr. Bland with intricate musical backdrops that set his supple baritone in vivid emotional relief. The two men accounted for more than 30 Top 20 rhythm-and-blues singles for Duke from 1958 to 1968, including the No. 1 hits “I Pity the Fool” and “That’s the Way Love Is.” Steeped in feelings of vulnerability and regret, many of these performances were particularly enthralling to the female portion of Mr. Bland’s audience...

I saw this in our local newspaper and thought of you. Coincidentally that day I heard him on Bluesville XM radio. Cool voice.
I couldn't get home fast enough to see if it was really true or not. I overheard it on a store radio, but there were no details. OMG, how awful!
RIP Tony Soprano
I was in the car driving in the mountains of KY. I heard it on the radio but the station had a little static so I wasn't sure if I heard right or not. Not being able to get the net there I had to wait till I got back home and look it up. So sad RIP Tony.
Actor Allan Ar bus died April 19 at the age of 95. Arbus was best known for playing psychiatrist Maj. Sidney Freedman on the TV series M*A*S*H* in the 1970's. In his younger days, he was a well-known photographer, working with his ex-wife Diane Arbus.

Thanks DC! I have a feeling that's just what he wanted. He just couldn't "quit us" He had to get the boot.
In short, DICK went on a sort of rampage tho not sure what sparked it. Lots of name calling, insults, vulgarity, racism & hate directed at some BBers and the board itself, as though he really didn't care and wanted to be kicked off. Mods did what needed to be done.

I was very shocked and saddened by the news. When the first cast CD came out, Best Buy did a promotional autograph session. Although each cast member was very sweet (the show was still in its infancy), Cory Monteith seemed especially delighted to meet each fan, and made sure to thank them for coming and for watching the show. He was very sweet and friendly. What a terrible waste!
Love Dennis Farina. Crime Story was a great show that didn't get the recognition or ratings it deserved. My favorite movie of his was "Midnight Run" with DeNiro and Charles Grodin.
R.I.P. Emile Griffith. One of my favorite fighters (a GREAT boxer from the '60s), I saw him fight at the Garden a few times and he was always a pleasure to watch. I remember watching (on television) his last bout against Benny Paret (in which Paret later died after being knocked out). Griffith was never the same after that.
He died here on Long Island earlier today. He was 75.

They did an ESPN documentary on Griffith about 7 or 8 years ago called "Ring of Fire." It's fantastic. Towards the end Emile visits Paret's grave at Saint Raymonds. I was there filing paperwork in the office when they filmed that sequence.

A great welterweight. I saw the first of the three Griffith-Paret fights. Griffith won that one and did a complete flip in the ring. I think there was some issue in the final fight where Paret was making disparaging comments to Griffith who was gay (no exactly acceptable in those days) and Griffith literally killed him in that fight. As I recall the problem was with the ref who should have called the fight when Paret was literally out on his feet and being pummelled. Griffith was never the same fighter after that bout.
Actress, Eileen Brennan passed away at 80 from bladder cancer. I remember her mostly from Private Benjamin
The role I associate her with is from "The Sting".
One of my favorite ballplayers, George Scott, a power hitting first baseman with the Boston Red Sox and some other clubs in the '60s and '70s died on Sunday. He was only 69. R.I.P. Boomer
Actress Karen Black, who played Jack Nickolson's girlfriend in "Five Easy Pieces" died today. She was 74.
Her portrayal of a woman attacked by a voodoo doll scared the crap out of me (in "Trilogy of Terror" made in the mid '70s). She also appeared in "Easy Rider". R.I.P.

Oh sure, I remember her from Five Easy Pieces and I loved her in the Trilogy of Terror. I'll never forget the last scene of the voodoo doll story. Totally creepy. They did a remake I saw fairly recently (don't remember the year it was made) and it wasn't bad, but not as good as the original.
I just heard about the Dick Van Dyke story this morning. He is so funny. He said to the reporter, "is anyone in the market for a used Jaguar?" He looks great for 87 no?
Anyway, glad he's ok. I used to love the "Dick Van Dyke Show."

He looks very good, and I too loved the Dick Van Dyke Show. I heard he was on his way to the dentist when the incident happened.
Former Disney star Lee Thompson Young has died aged 29 after suicide. There was no official cause of death, but Young's manager confirmed Monday that the Famous Jett Jackson actor 'tragically took his own life.'
Yes, I remember Harris in "East of Eden", so many years ago. Although, for me, I remember her most from Knot's Landing tv show which I watched regularly. RIP
Okay, thanks! Haven't been around much lately, but I'll try and pop in more often if I can.
Regarding Julie Harris, perhaps some of the older members might recall her wonderful performance as Emily Dickinson in the one-woman show, The Belle of Amherst, first on Broadway, then as a PBS special presentation.
But what most folks have forgotten is that in the early 1950's, way before Cabaret and Liza Minnelli, Julie Harris was the original Sally Bowles in the non-musical play, I Am A Camera. It was filmed in 1955, but the film is rarely shown.
A great loss. I remember Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald, accused of murdering his pregnant wife and daughters, appeared on Frost's show. His behavior on the show and light-hearted responses to Frost's questions were part of the reasons that they reopened the investigation.
RIP Tommy Morrison. Former heavyweight boxer and actor in one of the Rocky movies. He was only 44. They didn't say his cause of death but i know he tested positive for HIV years ago.
Ken Norton, the former heavyweight boxing champion from the 1970s died today. He was 70 years old.
Norton was a better fighter, IMHO, than he is generally given credit for. He beat Muhammad Ali when he broke his jaw in 1973. He also had one of the best fights I've ever seen (on tape) when he fought Larry Holmes (and lost).

The fight with Holmes was one of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time. I wasn't in high school yet and I loved both fighters. I was as sorry for Noas I was happy for Holmes, who was viewed as a hometown boy, having his first several pro bouts in Scranton.
IMy first thought of Norton is how he was robbed in 1976 on the third bout with Ali in Yankee Stadium.

Jeffrey McDonald is still fighting for a new trial after all these years. I think the murders took place around 1964 here at Ft Bragg. Interestingly I am told that many of his old buddies in Special Forces think he did it.
L. C. Greenwood, Member of ‘Steel Curtain,’ Dies at 67 By WILLIAM YARDLEY L. C. Greenwood, a 6-foot-6 blend of power, speed and style who as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ “Steel Curtain” defense in the 1970s helped lead his team to four Super Bowl victories, died on Sunday in Pittsburgh. He was 67.
The cause was kidney failure, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office said.
Greenwood, who had been skinny in college but bulked up to 245 pounds as a professional, played left defensive end, lining up alongside three players with whom he formed one of the most oppressive defensive lines in the history of the National Football League: “Mean” Joe Greene at left tackle, Ernie Holmes at right tackle and Dwight White at right end.
In technical football terms, they were the front four in a 4-3 defense. But after their repeated success prompted a local radio station to name the group as a whole, they became the Steel Curtain.
Greenwood, a master of the quarterback sack, was known for balancing a freewheeling playing style with a remarkable ability to avoid injury. Flying off the left edge, he might not have been as famous as the man rushing in beside him — Greene was the only member of the foursome elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame — but he was no less fierce or feared.

That was a great fighter, but there is one statistic that will dog him forever. He is the only heavyweight champ ever to hold the title who never won a title match.
Tyhanks, Lilo. I loved L.C. Greenwood, the leading sacker of the greatest defensive line and overall defense in football history. he belongs in the Hall of Fame, and I think if he didn't play alongside hall of famers, Joe Greene, Mel Blount, Jack Ham and Jack Lambert(all of whom are viewed among the cream of the crop of HOFers), his greatness would have been more easily distinguishable.
Mark Brandon Read, a notorious Australian criminal and self-described “murdering maggot” who spun tales from his violent history into a successful comedy routine and 10 top-selling books, including one illustrated for children, died on Wednesday in Melbourne. He was 58.
The cause was liver cancer, his manager, Andrew Parisi, said in a statement.
Mr. Read, a folk hero known as Chopper to his countrymen, claimed that all his books were based on his life, which he began as an unwanted child and proceeded through phases as a juvenile thug, mob enforcer, kidnapper and contract killer.
As I find with most character actors who's names don't ring bells, when I saw his picture I knew the face. He's appeared in many old (and newer) tv shows and movies that I've seen. One list of his tv credits showed he was in a Stephen King film but I hadn't even heard of the title (can't find the link now).

This year went by to fast. Geoffy what site do you use to verify your list?
Titans/Oilers founder and owner K.S. “Bud” Adams, Jr. passed away peacefully from natural causes at his home this morning in Houston.
And it happened two days after old Oiler coach, Bum Phillips, died. Bum would have won two Super Bowls, had it not been for the Steelers. He jokedthat playing Pittsburgh in the 70s sometimes three times a year took ten years off his life. He would have lived to 100, I guess.
Tell me about it! Every year gets faster and faster!

I just copy/paste each name into Google, and on the right side it'll say if he's dead. If it doesn't show up there, a Wikipedia link should be near the top of the results....

Wait, "Running Scared?" Is that about a guy who is in possession of a gun that killed someone? If so, that movie was just on tv two days ago. I couldn't finish watching it but it looked pretty good. He was the main star right?
But wow, only 40 yrs old. What a shame! RIP I read there was another person in the car with him.

Yup...i'm pretty sure you were watching Walkers movie. I thought it was pretty decent myself.
Some pretty intense photo's of the car after it exploded. They had to use dental records to id them. Walkers friend was driving the Porsche GT....some articles say it was Walkers car but other articles say it was his friends. Either way that Porsche GT is a pretty fast car.

Chazz Palminteri was in it too.
I loved Running Scared. Great movie.
Anyway, I'll forego the obvious irony jokes about this.

I remember how brutal and vicious the apartheid regime in South Africa was in the 70s and 80s. Despite woldwide condemnation I always thought Mandela was certain to die in prison. That he was eventually released seemed miraculous, but the transformation of the country that he inspired and led defied the wildest dreams.
His willingness to embrace and include those, who had oppressed him for seventy years was astonishing and accelerated the spread of justice, freedom and dignity in his country.
Mike Tyson got knocked out and the next day Mandela was released. It was a pretty eventful weekend.
I remember being so excited to see him at Tiger Stadium in 1990.
That must have bee AWESOME, Lilo .
And if I remember correctly, that was about the ONLY thing to get excited about at Tiger Stadium in the early '90s (save for Cecil Fielder, of course).
A good actor, I'll best remember him for a remark by Groucho Marx; Marx once ended a letter to someone asking, "Did you ever notice that the name Peter O'Toole has a double phallic meaning"?
Sorry to hear it. I know "Lawrence of Arabia" was probably his best known role, but for me, for some reason, I remember O'Toole & Audrey Hepburn in "How To Steal A Million."
Tom Laughlin, 82, the actor made famous by his portrayal of "Billy Jack" also died (a few days ago).
SC,
I just now read that story and was about to post it too. I only know him from the Billy Jack films which were really big back in the 70s. Anyone remember the theme song "One Tin Soldier?" How weird that I just heard that song yesterday.
I do remember Joan Fontaine. Tho I can't list, off top of my head, all of her films, my parents were fans. I remember there was a 4:00 "early show" every weekday and many times they aired her movies. And 96 yrs old. Wow!! RIP

Lawrence of Arabia stands as one of the greatest pictures ever made, and O'Toole's performance (his debut) is one for the ages. This is a huge loss.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned Eleanor Parker. She appeared as the Baroness in The Sound of Music (below) and in countless other films and television shows.

Excellent actor and film.
I know there are lots of stories about the partying of the rat pack in the 60s, but they were rank amateurs when compared to the exploits of Peter O'Toole, Richard Burton, Richard Harris and Peter Finch.
O'Toole and Harris were classic interviews whenever they were on talk shows.
Michael Caine told a story once when he was an understudy for O'Toole. He took Caine out for a night of heavy drinking and celebrating, which ended up with Caine waking up in a strange place, finding O'Toole passed out near him. Caine woke him and asked what time it was, and O'Toole, fighting the effects of drunkenness, answered, "Never mind the time. What f***ing day is it?"
As it turned out it was early evening, two days after they had begun drinking.
1. I had the dubious distinction to see him perform onstage in London in a performance of Pygmallion. O'Tool was shitfaced three sheets to the wind, and am sorry to say was awful. Flubbing lines, ad libbing, mugging to the audience and visibly pissing off the cast. The play went on foour and a half hours because of him. After that I only watched him on film, most memorably after that episode in King Ralph.
2. There is a story about his playing opposite Burton in Beckett. Because both of them were legendary drinkers, the director sat them down and told them they were actors, and because they did not know one another they were not friends, and thus should not drink together. They agreed, but the following morning Burton showed up with a couple of bottles of Cognac, went to O'Toole and said "Yesterday we were just two actors, but today we are friends," and they promptly downed the spirits.
I was making my list for next year, and I noticed that Julie Harris wasn't marked off.
Got it, thanks.

Geoff/SC, I did just that and I noticed that my #33 died back in '11 so please mark that name out.
My # 42 I need credit for this person died 3/20/13
Legendary tenor saxophonist, oboist, flutist and composer Yusef Lateef, whose 75-year odyssey in music took him from the bebop clubs of Detroit to the fields of Africa, the world of classical music and the halls of academia as a tenured professor, died Monday at his home in Amherst, Mass. He was 93.
Mr. Lateef’s death was confirmed by his wife, Ayesha, who said that he passed away after a short illness that took hold in September.
Mr. Lateef’s reputation in jazz was as broad as the shoulders of his towering frame. He gained notoriety as early as the 1950s in Detroit for his influential experiments with what would come to be known as “world music,” grafting the exotic instruments and influences of Africa and the Middle and Far East onto the trunk of modern jazz. His seminal embrace of Eastern scales would influence John Coltrane’s later innovations.
But the heart of Mr. Lateef’s musicianship was a profound understanding of the blues, best expressed through the wailing, cavernous tone he produced on the tenor sax. It was a sound braised by soulful bent pitches and to-the-point phrasing that grabbed you by the collar and refused to let go....
