Just wanted to know is this becoming a popular drug of choice on the street or is it just a phase that will fizzle out?

I tried MDPV (the most popular one) last year. Bad idea. It makes you say and do the dumbest shit.
It has since been banned.

Our legislature banned bath salts last year. County sheriff recently busted a bunch of convenience and food stores for selling the stuff.
Meanwhile, medical marijuana was approved by referendum in '10. A lottery for dispensary license is scheduled for next week. All of the county attorneys signed a petition to the governor, asking that the lottery be stopped because the Feds say they will prosecute growers and dispensaries.

I believe I read someplace that there are various ways bath salts can be made by using different ingredients, thereby making it illegal may prove difficult.

Wasn't the person who tried to eat his friend's face on bath salts? This designer drug trend is frightening. Besides having to block drugs being imported, nations now have to fear drugs being designed in labs right in their own countries.
