The 4 giants

The 4 giants - 10/31/11 04:03 AM

Just a quick question, out of curiosity: out of the following four...

YouTube
Google
Wikipedia
Facebook

Which is the most important to you? and the 2nd? 3rd?

Just one thing before you answer - in this thread, Google stands for search engine only, no Gmail! so forget about your personal email when you answer.

My list:

1) Wikipedia (I know it's not always 100 percent correct. But still, the biggest source of information on almost anything you want.)

2) YouTube -biggest source of video (music or not) for almost anything.

3) Google (well there are other search engines, but it does seem to bring the best results.

4) Facebook (not that important to me, rarely use it)

Well that's my list. I do use Wikipedia ALL the time, YouTube just when I got some free time. I use Google quite a lot as well, but I don't find it important as Wiki or YT. I guess I can live with a different search engine.

So is your list the same?

This is easy enough for me to answer:

1. Google

2. Wikipedia

3. YouTube

4. Facebook

Now, for the explanation: I use Google quite a lot. Often times, the search results will have a Wikipedia article at or near the top of the pile, so I will (more than likely) check out that article.

As far as YouTube, my ComputerSaurus is quite old, so this website is extremely difficult for me. I have used it on rare occasions, but a three minute song will take approximately 20 minutes or more to download before I can play it back and view it. So, I really cannot spare the time as far as YouTube. Regarding Facebook, I cannot view the site because my browser is too old. Once in a great while, I will look at a "cached" Facebook page (usually text only), but that's about all. I'm not into social networking sites, so it's really not very important to me.

If the most important thing for you while using google are the wikipedia links, then Wikipedia should top your list instead.

Please don't try to connect the 4 in your answer. I'm sure there are ways to get all 4 in 1.

Thanx for your answer cool

Wikipedia is not the most important thing for me when using Google. Since there may be a Wikipedia link at or near the top of the search results page, I will likely check out that link - along with any others that appear interesting and/or informative.

Therefore, Google is still at the top of my list.

Wow, a tough question! I use them all, all the time. If I had to list them in order of daily-use, by time spent (and not necessarily by overall value), then I'd say:

1) Facebook - I use it multiple times per day, on the computer and my iPhone. I quit most of them, but was playing a few Zynga games on FB concurrently, so wasted many hours there. Not so much any more (down to just Mafia Wars again). Having it mobile adds to that use, especially with Geo-location apps (was using Gowalla, now Foursquare) posting to FB, and checking comments, etc -- it's part of my daily life.

2) Google - It's my go-to search engine, and the default in my browser and iPhone. It is the best search engine, and I use it often -- few times a day at least. I'm not sure if Google+ can overtake Facebook in social networking -- at least not for a long while -- and I don't use it yet -- but in the future who knows.

3) Wikipedia - As SV, Google points me to wiki articles upon a search. And I'm constantly looking things up when watching TV or movies ("who is that actor?", etc -- tho IMDb is better for that), talking with friends, or just in general. At least a couple times a day.

4) YouTube - Love it, but I'm not a daily user. But frequent enough.

Re: The 4 giants - 11/01/11 01:14 AM

I'm a historian, so Google is most important because I couldn't possibly do research without it. Wiki is helpful in getting basic data (i.e., dates, surround) but Google leads me to the multiple resources I need to do good scholarship. I use YouTube only for watching a few how-to videos. Not interested in Facebook at all.

There's a difference between importance and favoritism.

So just for importance:

Google
Wikipedia
Youtube
Facebook

But for favoritism:

Youtube
Wikipedia
Google
Facebook

1. Facebook
2. Google
3. Wikipedia
4. YouTube

Logging onto my browser, I'll check Facebook after my e-mail; my default search engine is Google and I'll use it to search for torrents and music to download; I use it less for "research" now because I have access to academic databases again; I only use Wikipedia to find out tracklistings for albums and so on (though a lot of the music I like doesn't have Wikipedia entries), and don't treat it with any more seriousness than it deserves; I'll only use YouTube to spam friends with links to music videos they'll never listen to, or when I click to their own links they send to me.

Re: The 4 giants - 11/22/11 10:07 PM

1) Facebook
2) Google
3) Youtube
4) Wikipedia

I can't believe anyone is actually listing Wiki P higher than last! I'll admit I use it, even as far as to understand the prescribed medication that goes into my body, but always as a starting point. It's like a brainstorm if anything. Oh and I may be guilty of checking album tracks song listing too. In fact only the other night did I lose a discussion (read: minor argument) with the missus over when Rihanna's Umbrella came out because of Wiki P. But you can't trust a word it says. Everything else has to be checked.

Anyway FB come first because I am a bit of an FB whore. It's a journal, photobook and easy way to keep in touch with friends that I may not have seen for a while without having to do the ol' "Hey man, how's it going?", when instead you can reply to their status with some reason banther (read: abuse).

Google rocks; it has to come second.

Youtube, for me anyway, is a great way of listening to songs I don't want to purchase and perhaps just want to hear once or twice. I don't really use it for much else, perhaps the odd funny video every now and then.

^^^ Your list was in same order as mine. That means absolutely nothing, but there it is.
