It was about this time that my long-standing rapport with the Angels began to deteriorate. All the humor went out of the act when they began to believe their own press clippings, and it was no longer much fun to drink with them. Even the names lost their magic. Instead of Bagmaster, Scuzzy and Hype, it was Luther Young, E. O. Stuurm and Norman Scarlet III. There was no more mystery; overexposure had reduced the menace to an all-too-common denominator, and as the group portrait became more understandable it also became less appealing.

For nearly a year I had lived in a world that seemed, at first, like something original. It was obvious from the beginning that the menace bore little resemblance to its publicized image, but there was a certain pleasure in sharing the Angels' amusement at the stir they'd created. Later, as they attracted more and more attention, the mystique was stretched so thin that it finally became transparent. One afternoon as I sat in the El Adobe and watched an Angel sell a handful of barbiturate pills to a brace of pimply punks no more than sixteen, I realized that the roots of this act were not in any time-honored American myth but right beneath my feet in a new kind of society that is only beginning to take shape. To see the Hell's Angels as caretakers of the old "individualist" tradition "that made this country great" is only a painless way to get around seeing them for what they really are -- not some romantic leftover, but the first wave of a future that nothing in our history has prepared us to cope with. The Angels are prototypes. Their lack of education has not only rendered them completely useless in a highly technical economy, but it has also given them the leisure to cultivate a powerful resentment . . . and to translate it into a destructive cult which the mass media insists on portraying as a sort of isolated oddity, a temporary phenomenon that will shortly become extinct now that it's been called to the attention of the police.

This is a reassuring viewpoint and it would be even more so if the police shared it. Unfortunately, they don't. Cops who know the Angels only from press accounts are sometimes afraid of them, but familiarity seems to breed contempt, and cops who know the Angels from experience usually dismiss them as an overrated threat. On the other hand, at least 90 percent of the dozens of cops I talked to all over California were seriously worried about what they referred to as "the rising tide of lawlessness," or "the dangerous trend toward lack of respect for law and order." To them the Hell's Angels are only a symptom of a much more threatening thing. . . the Rising Tide.

"Mainly it's the teen-agers," said a young patrolman in Santa Cruz. "Five years ago it was only a matter of talking to them, telling them in a friendly kind of way just what they could or couldn't get away with. They were just as wild, I guess, but you knew they would listen to reason." He shrugged, fingering the .38 Special cartridges that circled his waist. "But now, goddamnit, it's different. You never know when some kid's going to swing on you, or pull a gun, or maybe just take off running. The badge doesn't mean a damn thing to them. They've lost all respect for it, all fear. Hell, I'd rather bust a dozen Hell's Angels every day of the week than have to break up one fight at a big high school beer party. With the motorcycle crowd you at least know what you're up against, but these kids are capable of anything. I mean it, they give me the creeps. I used to understand them, but not any more."

The trends and problems of law enforcement have never interested the Angels, however, and even after their temporary détente with the Oakland police, they still viewed cops very simply as the enemy. Nor do they take much interest in their emotional or ideological connection to other rebellious elements. To them all comparisons are either presumptuous or insulting. "There's only two kinds of people in the world," Magoo explained one night. "Angels, and people who wish they were Angels."

John is one of a decreasing number of entertainers who is actually a decent person. That tragedy entered his life with the death of his son is such a shame. But, it emphasizes just how randomly tragedy strikes. That's why we should all do the best we can witht he little time we are given.

Boy, that is so sad. You're right Olivant, things like this happen to people in all walks of life. I simply can not comprehend the pain the Travoltas must be going through in losing their child.

That is very sad, and just as it has been difficult watching the grief of my parents over the recent unexpected passing of my brother, I can only imagine the sadness of the Travoltas. Losing your son at 16 is an unimaginable horror.

I agree with you on the decency of John Travolta. He spent several months in the Harrisburg area filming the movie Numbers about 10 years ago. While I never saw him, there were many reports and accounts of how he would greet anyone who wanted to meet him even during filming. He accepted dinner invitations from fans, and mingled constantly.

You're dead on, olivant, when you say that tragedy is random, and your time is valuable.

NEW YORK (AP) - The recession has reached the ritzy Rainbow Room, the special-occasion spot that overlooks midtown Manhattan from high above the tourist-attracting Rockefeller Center skating rink.
WNBC-TV reports that the owners plan to shutter the Italian-themed Rainbow Grill restaurant temporarily while keeping the establishment's bar, banquet space and dinner-dancing going on the 65th floor of the RCA building.

The Rainbow Room has symbolized glamour since it opened in 1934, during the Great Depression.

Cipriani International chief operating officer John Higgins told WNBC the decision was "due to the current economic crisis" and a lease dispute.

Perhaps it has something to do with the $20 drinks or the $150 per person dinners. Still and all, the Rainbow Grill is my favorite bar in all of Manhattan. The views are worth every penny. I had dinner in the Rainbow Room once, almost 30 years ago. It's a magical place.

Hey Olivant, there was a Rainbow Room in the Midlands, although nothing connected to the American one.

What about other NY landmarks like the Carnegie Deli, Sardi's (?), Russian Tea Room, Tavern on the Green? Are those places still up and runnning and have you been there? What's the one with the pictures of movie stars on teh wall? Is that in NY?

That's Sardi's and I have eaten there. The food was fine, but you mostly go for the history. I believe that the Tea Room is gone and I've never been to Tavern on the Green. Tavern on the Green is in Central Park and I understand that the place is gorgeous but that the food is so-so.

I was there once in the Summer of 1987. I was in law school, living in Boston, and visited my brother (the one who passed away a few weeks ago), who lived in Manhattan. It was a Sunday afternoon and we had a little time before my train would leave, so he took me there. We had a few exotic drinks. He then looked at his watch and said we better hurry if I was going to make the 5 PM train. He paid the bill, and hurried out. I grabbed my overnight bag, stood up, and promptly staggered into a wall. Because the room and streets seemed to be moving for me, I yelled ahead and told him I better set my sights on the 6pm train.

But the place was very pretty, but I didn't have any food there.

I heard earlier today that Patrick Swayze admitted himself to the hospital for pneumonia. This makes me so sad. I don't know a lot about his personal life, nor have I seen all of his films (I loved Ghost),but he always seems so down to earth. The fact that he's stayed married to his wife for such a long time is admirable (very very rare if not impossible in his line of work).

Did anyone see his interview with Barbara Walters in which he talked about his cancer and the fact that he was given 2 years to live. Although he's said he's fighting all the way, it doesn't sound very good. I just feel so bad for him.

My stepdaughter was invited to go to Chuck E Cheese's with her best friend Kallee and her brother Clayton and three of their other girl friends.

Here are all six of their names together: Cory, Carlie, Kallee, Kylie, Kaitlin and Clayton.

Sounds like Roger Clemens' kids.

The thing is, only two of them are related. Kalle and Clayton.

Calling All Cars: Trouble at Chuck E. Cheese's, Again

In Brookfield, Wis., no restaurant has triggered more calls to the police department since last year than Chuck E. Cheese's.

Officers have been called to break up 12 fights, some of them physical, at the child-oriented pizza parlor since January 2007. The biggest melee broke out in April, when an uninvited adult disrupted a child's birthday party. Seven officers arrived and found as many as 40 people knocking over chairs and yelling in front of the restaurant's music stage, where a robotic singing chicken and the chain's namesake mouse perform.

Chuck E. Cheese's bills itself as a place "where a kid can be a kid." But to law-enforcement officials across the country, it has a more particular distinction: the scene of a surprising amount of disorderly conduct and battery among grown-ups.

"The biggest problem is you have a bunch of adults acting like juveniles," says Town of Brookfield Police Capt. Timothy Imler. "There's a biker bar down the street, and we rarely get calls there."

It isn't clear exactly how often fights break out at Chuck E. Cheese's 538 locations. Richard Huston, executive vice president of marketing for the chain's parent company, CEC Entertainment Inc. of Irving, Texas, describes their occurrence as "atypical," saying he has heard of "four or five significant adult altercations" this year. But in some cities, law-enforcement officials say the number of disruptions at their local outlet is far higher than at nearby restaurants, and even many bars. "We've had some unfortunate and unusual altercations between adults at these locations," Mr. Huston says. "Even one is just way too many."

Fights among guests are an issue for all restaurants, but security experts say they pose a particular problem for Chuck E. Cheese's, since it is designed to be a haven for children. Law-enforcement officials say alcohol, loud noise, thick crowds and the high emotions of children's birthday parties make the restaurants more prone to disputes than other family entertainment venues.

The environment also brings out what security experts call the "mama-bear instinct." A Chuck E. Cheese's can take on some of the dynamics of the animal kingdom, where beasts rush to protect their young when they sense a threat.

Stepping in when a parent perceives that a child is being threatened "is part of protective parenting," says Frank Farley, a psychologist at Temple University and former president of the American Psychological Association. "It is part of the species -- all species, in fact -- in the animal kingdom," he says. "We do it all of the time."

Now some towns are asking CEC to step into the ring. Amid pressure from local politicians, some Chuck E. Cheese's have stopped serving alcohol and added security guards who carry pistols.

CEC has been tightening safety rules to deter fighting in other ways. In Milwaukee, the store posted a sign outlining a dress code that prohibits what it calls "gang-style apparel." That location also implemented a code of conduct that prohibits knives, chains, screwdrivers and glass cutters. CEC is considering systemwide signs at popular games such a machine that draws digital pictures of customers to let people know there may be a time or token limit. Making the machines more expensive to use is another option, but Mr. Huston says that is "inconsistent with our value message."

In Pennsylvania, Susquehanna Township police are searching for suspects involved in a Nov. 9 altercation at a Chuck E. Cheese's outside Harrisburg. The police department gets called to respond to disputes at the restaurant as many as 15 times a year, Police Chief Robert Martin says.

My 2 year old boy,Matthew,is a genius it has been officially declared

Last night at dinner he was playing up,refusing to eat his macaroni cheese so his mother weedled him into eating 10 forkfulls. "I will con him here" she said to me winking.

So off he went,shovelling forkloads in while his mother counted him down. Little did my wife realise though, is that when i take him to bed i count him up the stairs,of which there are 13....

5,6,7, says Mrs Yogi and then as he put another fork in she says "4",hence trying the fix.

Matthew lowers his fork,glares at her and then says

"Silly Mammy,its 8 not 4"

My wife nearly fell off her chair.

Call me a pessimist, but two years sounds unrealistic for Patrick Swayze or anyone suffering from pancreatic cancer. I've known of a few people with it. One died a few weeks after being diagnosed, another lasted about 9 months, and a relative of mine lasted 14 months. It's all about when it is detected but is ultimately a death sentence and not treatable. NFL executive Gene Upshaw was diagnosed this past summer on a Sunday and died the following week. I hope Swayze can buck the odds, but it seems like an extreme longshot.

Chemo does nothing to substantially improve the patient with pancreatic cancer. All it does is delay the inevitable and, as Mig said, weakens the person to the point where he/she is more likely to have other medical problems because of the low immune system. For those of you who have seen a person who takes chemo, it can be very difficult to cope with because of the potential for so many adverse side effects.

You can get up each and every aisle with no brushing carts, no excuse me, no kids running out in front of you trying to get that toy. You can shop in the clearance section with no interruptions. From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., I get all I can. If I need help, I ask. Don't be afraid to ask; that is what they are there for -- to help you, the consumer. Enjoy yourself, and have fun shopping for the little munchkins.

We found a cat outside tonight, which has apparently been one of the visitors that has my cats so interested in going outside each night. He looks and acts a lot like my Tiger - he was shy about not knowing me, yet at the same time wanted to be friendly. We brought him in at first, worried he'd run off and end up being a lost pet that someone was trying to find, but he went nuts, so we had to let him back out.

I couldn't help picking him up and petting him, and we set out food and water, so I think Tiger and Angie felt quite betrayed. It took me an hour or so before I won back their love.

I watched the footage. I was thinking about the flight to DC that went down in the Potomac. That had to be 25 years ago. Most of those people froze before they could be rescued.

Seeing people pulled from a plane that was partially submerged in the Hudson was just surreal.

No Snickering: That Road Sign Means Something Else

CRAPSTONE, England — When ordering things by telephone, Stewart Pearce tends to take a proactive approach to the inevitable question “What is your address?”

He lays it out straight, so there is no room for unpleasant confusion. “I say, ‘It’s spelled “crap,” as in crap,’ ” said Mr. Pearce, 61, who has lived in Crapstone, a one-shop country village in Devon, for decades.

Disappointingly, Mr. Pearce has so far been unable to parlay such delicate encounters into material gain, as a neighbor once did.

“Crapstone,” the neighbor said forthrightly, Mr. Pearce related, whereupon the person on the other end of the telephone repeated it to his co-workers and burst out laughing. “They said, ‘Oh, we thought it didn’t really exist,’ ” Mr. Pearce said, “and then they gave him a free something.”

In the scale of embarrassing place names, Crapstone ranks pretty high. But Britain is full of them. Some are mostly amusing, like Ugley, Essex; East Breast, in western Scotland; North Piddle, in Worcestershire; and Spanker Lane, in Derbyshire.

Others evoke images that may conflict with residents’ efforts to appear dignified when, for example, applying for jobs.

These include Crotch Crescent, Oxford; Titty Ho, Northamptonshire; Wetwang, East Yorkshire; Slutshole Lane, Norfolk; and Thong, Kent. And, in a country that delights in lavatory humor, particularly if the word “bottom” is involved, there is Pratts Bottom, in Kent, doubly cursed because “prat” is slang for buffoon.

As for Penistone, a thriving South Yorkshire town, just stop that sophomoric snickering.

“It’s pronounced ‘PENNIS-tun,’ ” Fiona Moran, manager of the Old Vicarage Hotel in Penistone, said over the telephone, rather sharply. When forced to spell her address for outsiders, she uses misdirection, separating the tricky section into two blameless parts: “p-e-n” — pause — “i-s-t-o-n-e.”

Several months ago, Lewes District Council in East Sussex tried to address the problem of inadvertent place-name titillation by saying that “street names which could give offense” would no longer be allowed on new roads.

“Avoid aesthetically unsuitable names,” like Gaswork Road, the council decreed. Also, avoid “names capable of deliberate misinterpretation,” like Hoare Road, Typple Avenue, Quare Street and Corfe Close.

(What is wrong with Corfe Close, you might ask? The guidelines mention the hypothetical residents of No. 4, with their unfortunate hypothetical address, “4 Corfe Close.” To find the naughty meaning, you have to repeat the first two words rapidly many times, preferably in the presence of your fifth-grade classmates.)

The council explained that it was only following national guidelines and that it did not intend to change any existing lewd names.

Still, news of the revised policy raised an outcry.

“Sniggering at double entendres is a loved and time-honored tradition in this country,” Carol Midgley wrote in The Times of London. Ed Hurst, a co-author, with Rob Bailey, of “Rude Britain” and “Rude UK,” which list arguably offensive place names — some so arguably offensive that, unfortunately, they cannot be printed here — said that many such communities were established hundreds of years ago and that their names were not rude at the time.

“Place names and street names are full of history and culture, and it’s only because language has evolved over the centuries that they’ve wound up sounding rude,” Mr. Hurst said in an interview.

Mr. Bailey, who grew up on Tumbledown Dick Road in Oxfordshire, and Mr. Hurst got the idea for the books when they read about a couple who bought a house on Butt Hole Road, in South Yorkshire.

The name most likely has to do with the spot’s historic function as a source of water, a water butt being a container for collecting water. But it proved to be prohibitively hilarious.

“If they ordered a pizza, the pizza company wouldn’t deliver it, because they thought it was a made-up name,” Mr. Hurst said. “People would stand in front of the sign, pull down their trousers and take pictures of each other’s naked buttocks.”

The couple moved away.

The people in Crapstone have not had similar problems, although their sign is periodically stolen by word-loving merrymakers. And their village became a stock joke a few years ago, when a television ad featuring a prone-to-swearing soccer player named Vinnie Jones showed Mr. Jones’s car breaking down just under the Crapstone sign.

In the commercial, Mr. Jones tries to alert the towing company to his location while covering the sign and trying not to say “crap” in front of his young daughter.

The consensus in the village is that there is a perfectly innocent reason for the name “Crapstone,” though it is unclear what that is. Theories put forth by various residents the other day included “place of the rocks,” “a kind of twisting of the original word,” “something to do with the soil” and “something to do with Sir Francis Drake,” who lived nearby.

Jacqui Anderson, a doctor in Crapstone who used to live in a village called Horrabridge, which has its own issues, said that she no longer thought about the “crap” in “Crapstone.”

Still, when strangers ask where she’s from, she admitted, “I just say I live near Plymouth.”

Rooty Hill meets Titty Bong

A FEW years back the Reverend Fred Nile drew to my attention the fact that certain dictionaries contain dirty words, like titty and bottom. Apprenticed by Fred as a trainee moral custodian, I've since joined in many an Eliot Ness-ish raid on bookshops, burning any copies of the Oxford, Macquarie or Collins we can lay our hands on. We also sneak into libraries and tear out offending pages.
Now we've turned our attention to maps. Bearing the weight of the world on our shoulders like Atlases, Fred and I now burn atlases. Because they're full of filth. Readers may recall my North American examples a few months back. The US might be the land of the free and the home of the brave, but its landscape is littered with the lewd and the lubricious – with towns called Dildo or Intercourse and any number of mountains with mammiferous or phallic names.

As Fred says, the US is off to a bad start with its famous Route 66, which is a disgrace, the word suggestive of fornication while the number approaches the satanic. Little wonder there are so many obscene road movies and books, like that effort of Jack Kerouac's.

But is Australia any better? Readers may recall me asking them to identify our prurient places and tawdry towns – our pornographic place names. I'm proud to say that hundreds rallied to the cause. So now, even as you read this column, Fred and I are "on the road", chopping down offending signs whilst demanding errant councils rechristen their suggestive townships.

Here are some awful examples provided by outraged correspondents.

Black Butt, near Kingaroy. Sheba's Breasts, near Chillagoe. Tellem Buggerem Close, a road in Rubyvale, apparently named in response to the local authority's unpopular habit of increasing rates. Black Charlie's Opening, in Tasmania. Dickwood Drive in Darwin (apparently it runs into Fanny Bay), and Bowelling in Western Australia – "but there's a worse name for those who are just passing through", warns a reader. Pakenham Upper in Victoria was much complained about in letters and emails. As were Mount Buggery and Mount Boobyalla – the latter peak next to the Knobs!

Slap-Arse Row near the township of Aldinga, South Australia, recently renamed (praise the Lord) Hele Street, after Sir Ivor Hele. And, of course, Rooty Hill in NSW.

Even worse, Cyril Street, Camp Hill, Titty Bong near Swan Hill and Mount Mee, near Caboolture. Not to mention Mount Meharry in the Hamersley Range and Mount Little Dick, just up the road from Bairnsdale. What is it about mountains?

Innaloo in WA, and East Intercourse Island near Dampier. Bum Bum Creek, on the New England Highway – and Buggery Hut, not far from where the Murrumbidgee joins the Murray. "There's more than a hint that the name derives from a lonely shepherd with his flock," writes the reader who supplied that one.

Horny Point, Shag Cove and Fanny Point, all near Port Lincoln. Split Arse Rock near Cape Donnington. And Cockburn in metropolitan Perth – "You get an unsettling feeling you might have thrown one too many snags on the barbecue after a skinny-dip."

John and Peter in Daisydale tell of Lake Fanny, Boomers Bottom, Robbins Passage and Mouldy Hole – all in Tasmania, as is Queenstown (Fred is furious!), while Brian Robb points to a map of lakes and creeks around Cairns. "One was called Wherethefuckarewe."

Rose Mackenzie writes of a Tsipura Drive at Burleigh Heads – Ar U Pist spelled backwards. And there's a lovely story about the "days when place-names were made of cut-out letters fixed to a flat plate", from a reader who drove through Pichi Richi Pass between Port Augusta and Quorn in South Australia and saw that "some bright spark had changed the sign to Itchi Arse".

Fred was also concerned to learn, from Wendy Tonkes, of a Bulcock Street near Dicky Beach, close by Lower Gay Terrace and Upper Gay Terrace. Shame on you, Caloundra!

I'd like to thank the hundreds who alerted Fred and I to these vile toponyms. While they'll get their rewards in heaven, the prize – a warmly inscribed copy of my recent book, Adams' Ark – goes to Guy Chester, for Yorkeys Knob near Cairns.

Many pointed to the place, but Guy told the wonderful story of Yorkey, the fisherman who lived there and lost his arm while using dynamite instead of a net or line. "How he sailed his little sloop overnight to Cairns without complete blood loss remains a mystery to this day."

Yorkey also established a beche-de-mer industry – "dried sea cucumber was considered an aphrodisiac by the then plentiful Chinese in Cairns". Guy says there have been many attempts by developers to rename "the Knob", but you can still buy a T-shirt that boasts: "Yorkeys Knob – bigger than Moby's dick."

I didn't see Floyd's Knob, IN on Mig's list...

Lilo, I've never understood how anyone could harm a child. It is beyond my comprehension. I understand that most abusers were abused as children. To me, it would seem logical that, knowing the pain involved, they would be the least likely to abuse, but I guess it just doesn't work that way.

I also saw on the news today that a California man killed his entire family (wife and five children) this morning. He sent a fax to a local TV station saying that he and his wife had both lost their jobs and were killing their children and then themselves. The police seem to think that the wife was a victim and not in on the plan.

How funny!! I got home from work yesterday and jumped in the shower (I had to wash my hair, or I'd take a hot bath). Anyway, my condo had NO hot water either. I hated it. As I was getting my hair wet I'm saying "shit, shit, burr, damn, f..." It was awful. You know how I hate being cold.


This morning when I woke up, still no hot water. I called the association who told me that several buildings in my complex were without hot water and that they got tons of calls. Gee, ya think??? The lady was nice as she told me that normally when there is any work done and the water needs to be shut off, all the people get a notice. Well, the repair people took it upon themsleves to just start the work without any notificaion. I hate hate hate cold showers. Thank God, the water is nice and hot tonight.

Thanks, so the way it works out we really only paid $8 for our bottles and I used the money from that and some diapers I returned (We're only using Huggies because my wife and her sisters were all allergic to anything but, and someone had bought us Pampers) and I took Molly on a little shopping spree.

She got a little stuffed Lion, a set of booties and mitts for 98 cents, a nice dress, and some diaper wipes. She made out like a bandit.

Every time I read about LN's baby-on-the-way and the rest of you talk about what a joy it is to have children, I wonder if I'm missing out on life. I'm happy with my life, and I love my step kids as much as possible without having that father/child bond.

But I've come to realize that being a step parent is nearly impossible because, when it comes to disciplining the children, the issue of "You're not my dad" or "They're not your kids, they're mine" comes up. And I'm not talking about spanking or any kind of physical discipline. What I mean is talking to them about what they did wrong, or yelling at them because they did something like nearly burn the house down. If I was their biological father I wouldn't get those type of responses.

However, if I take the approach of standing back and letting their Mom handle business I get the lecture about not doing enough to help.

Don't even get me started about celebrating Father's Day.

Whisper, I saw that on the news last night. The fire looked so horrible, impossible to control. They showed some poor woman who had lost her home, and she couldn't stop crying. It was heartbreaking.

I followed this story too. That's a large number of people to die. It's very sad, and that arson is suspected makes the story all the more cruel.

That is terrible. I hope they find the arsonist who did that.

A hint for those struggling with multiple nested quotes - it cannot handle nested quotes after a few (3 I think) levels of nesting, BUT, if you remove the name of the person quoting it (i.e., if you use the plain quote instead of quote=member), it will allow you many more levels of quoting. The outermost three levels can still have the usernames.

Those who have been to Las Vegas, any suggestions for hotels to stay at ? I hear that Vegas hotels are somewhat cheap, I don't know what to expect though. Also can you suggest any good shows and stuff to do there (other than gambling )? I have four days, but would be totally free only on 2 days. Of course google search gave me hotel prices and stuff, but any suggestion based on personal experience appreciated

I guess it all depends on what you like and what you want and what you want to spend. Rooms in Vegas (for the most part) are extremely reasonable. IMHO you get your money's worth in Vegas as far as a room is concerned than anywhere else.

That's not to say you can' spend a lot for a room. The upperend type rooms in the luxury hotels (Wynn comes to mind) can be high like 3/500 a night (depending on what time of the year you are going). There is the Bellagio (which I loved and paid $150 a night a couple years ago. That and the Paris, Venetian are more or less the same calibur. However, they also have cheap rooms (I tend to lean toward those when I am by mysef in Vegas, since I am hardly in myroom) You can get 30 - 50 a night rooms at Imperial Palace, Sahara (Although Saraha is too far down the strip), and even the Flamingo for a little more.

If you don't like to gamble much there are many shows. However figure on spending at least around $100 for a show. For instance, Elton John is very very expensive ($300). Yet, some like Legends run around $50 or so. There are also tours of Lake Mead (helicopter tours too), a Liberace Museum and a wax museaum. I admit though, I have never gone on tours. I enjoy just walking the strip. No where else can you walk down the street with a drink in your hand

I'd suggest if you don't want to lose too much money take breaks. Oh, and almost every hotel has lounge acts. Don't be fooled into thinking they are all "rinky dink" . They are mostly very proessional acts and usually a small cover charge or a two drink minimum.

Hey, I met TIS there in March a few years ago. I'm really not much of a gambler either but I'll play the slots for fun. On this particular day TIS wanted to play in the casino at her hotel so I sat down at the nickel machines (I'll usually play the $1 machines) and it was some poker game.... I was mindlessly playing the game when all of a sudden I won $100. Now, in the grand scheme of things $100 isn't that much of a jackpot but on a NICKEL machine??!!??

Set a limit for yourself... even if it's only $25. You can get free drinks while you're playing and it can be fun for awhile. Also, try the breakfast buffets .... just don't get on a line in front of TIS.

Dunno if they still have it but there used to be a laser light (multi-media) show every night on some street about a mile away from most of the newer casinos. It's free and worth a look. (I think it runs every hour or so).

Dad's coming up from Florida days before I was to fly down (but I may be postponing 'til Easter cuz now my brother/nephew may be going down then, so now I have no idea what's going on) [I'm going as planned]. It just turned into a busy/complicated week!

Yeah, she had stomach flu really bad and so she was dehydrated. Baby's heartbeat was in the 180s, but then after she got some fluids and nausea medicine it went back down to normal (140).

One of my best pals at work has been suffering from various chest infections the last few months. He has just been into our hospital for tests this week (the same hospital we both work in which is handy for visiting him) and apparently he has a hole in the heart

33 years old and he he finds out he has had it since birth and never known. He will get an operation soon and hopefully be ok. He is a big lad though,21 stones plus,so i think he may need to drop a few pounds!

LN, make sure that your wife keeps drinking lots of water. I spoke to a friend last night, and all three of her kids had that stomach bug. She said it was horrible, plus of course they got it one after the other.

That's a lot of stones. What does a stone weigh? About 12 lbs.?

Yogi, perhaps you've already answered this question elsewhere on the Board. But, what's the deal on health insurance in the UK? All we get here is anecdotal information on national health insurance and it's all negative. Can you give us the low-down on it?

From what I've seen/heard the system is pretty good. Doctors still manage to make a lot of money and people get their health needs taken care of. It's more focused on preventive medicine rather than making you get sick before they do anything for you.

I have a friend who is from England. Her mother and brothers still live there. They've told me that the healthcare is less than thrilling.

Her mother needed cardiac bypass, but they would only OK a stent. Her brother had cataract surgery. As can be the case, he was left with "snowy" vision and needed to have another surgery to have it corrected. It took several months before he could get the second surgery, and he had to live with that distorted vision all that time.

I'm bored.

I work for the NHS so i support it. The general idea is that anyone who pays taxes also pays a National Insurance contribution to the government which goes to the NHS and then anyone who has problems can go to hospital and get seen for free.

The problems that have arisen over the years are that the population has grown so much that the NHS has struggled to cope,big waiting lists and the like. Also the politicians fight over it like tigers about how much money should be sunk into it. So a while ago they broke it up into individual trusts who maintain their own regional hospitals. The problem here is that many of these folk are idiots and run their trusts badly.

Private treatment has become a big thing just lately. People pay so much yearly and when they need a hip operation they get it done the next day. If they needed it done on the NHS they would get it done but it would take a year!

The NHS is a great idea but it has become like an out of control snowball rolling down the hill.

For the record.the hospital i work for,the Freeman is regularly voted one of the best 3 in the country for hygiene and cutting waiting lists. it is also a world centre for heart treatments and cancer care.

So I did the drug screen and TB test for my new job and I went ahead and set up an interview at Barnes and Nobles. I love that place. I can spend hours there. I'm going to see if maybe I can work mornings and weekends there and work at the other place.

Long, what about MHMR facilities? They are always looking for staff and they just need warm bodies for most jobs.

What's MHMR?

Mental Health and Mental Retardation. They pay rather low, but they have full benefits and they are usually always looking for workers. They usually offer shifts.

That's probably similar to what I'm going to be doing, it's $8.50 or so an hour and it might have benefits, I'm not sure.

Santino - As silly as that appears now, that's the mentality that was very real back when I was in elementary school. We used to have air raid drills.... the neighborhood siren would go off and all school kids had to get under their desks. Even though I was in the second or third grade then, I had some of the best sex of my life during those drills (sharing a desk with a pretty gal).

Eisenhower was president and Kruschev (the Russian premier) was the enemy and we were taught to expect an attack (or, at least be prepared for one). The fear that came a few years later during the Cuban missile crisis was VERY REAL!

All large buildings had those "Shelter" signs (indicating that you could use the basements or hallways as a shelter) and some buildings still have them as a reminder of the 50s fear.

My mother was a young girl during the WWII and every family with a garden had an Anderson bomb shelter in it. Although she was in Newcastle and not London,famous for the Blitz, the Germans dropped bombs every night because she lived right next to the shipyards which the Germans were trying to destroy. She was 8/9 and still remembers the dread of the siren going!

I assume you had a private house back in Michigan. In Brooklyn, where a LOT of the buildings are apartment buildings, most of them had "air-raid shelters" (which meant you would just stand in the basements). Damn, an A-bomb would knock the entire building over.

I can't imagine the fear from that. My uncle was stationed in England during WWII and he met my aunt there. She used to tell me the stories of the blitz (she was in her early 20s then) and how she and her family would take cover in shelters. Just hearing the stories would scare me.

I have friends who are from England. Kenneth is around 70, and he lived in London during the Blitz. His home was near a munitions dump, so his neighborhood was bombed frequently. Obviously he remembers the bombing, but he also remembers the following little song that we try to get him to sing aloud in bars after a few:

I can't imagine what it must have been like in Europe during those days. I know that my relatives in Italy said that after the war was over, they all almost starved. I read somewhere recently that in a small town near Naples (or it may have been Naples, I can't recall exactly), the people were so hungry that they ate the fish in the aquarium.

I recently read a book about the great battle at Monte Cassino in 1944. Although both sides suffered greatly,the worst hit were the Italian natives who refused to leave their homes. They suffered starvation and great indignities,especially from the north Africans who fought with the allies.
