Geoff do you get those Vegas commercials there about "what happens in Vegas?" If not, I'll tell you a couple. They are hilarious.

Yeah, we get them here, TIS - they're cute, but I'm sure I could improve on them! (They may not be able to use mine as commercials, tho )

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 08/21/07 12:44 AM

Now that I think about it, here in CA they are advertising horse races in Santa Anita I believe(indicating why bet at Vegas when you can stay here in CA and bet on the horses). What are they advertising there? Same?

Well of course you could do better I have no doubt, but it'd be a shame to have a whole tv network closed down.

SC,

Every buffet we went to in Vegas was non-smoking...well they didn't ask our preference and I didn't see any smoking, so I assumed you can't smoke in the restaurant area anymore. We ate at Bellagio, Cesars, Rio and I don't remember where else. You can still smoke in the gaming area though. \:\) And you can still smoke walking down the street (and drink too!!! ;))

DMC,

Nice avator!!! Who are you directing the sign language to?

That's one thing my daughter just had to do. She loves to get massages. She went to the place in the Bellagio and it cost her $160 for what 45 min or so. \:o To me, I'd rather throw my money in a slot machine or blackjack table. For her it was wonderful. Go figure. Everyone is different.

Back to the 08 meet. I have often thought (especially after I retire) that visiting larger cities in each state would be nice. Just to see what are like. I mean I'd be open for a different city each year. I've never been to so many states and wonder what some of the cities are like. Of course, you'd need time (not to mention money) :p. Of course, I'm certainly not complaining about Vegas.

Just throwing "random" thoughts out there. If Vegas is decided for next year, would you all still want to go in the summer???

It makes no difference to me, but for those who don't know the temps will be well into the 100's for sure. On the plus side, rates are cheaper and it's not as busy. Just wondering.

I do know you can get group rates. I'm not sure of the number of rooms though. Could be 10+.

Anyone jump in. \:\)

P.S. There's always New Year's Eve. I've always wanted to go to Vegas on New Year's Eve. \:D Rooms are a fortune though. \:\/

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 08/22/07 01:33 AM

Summer is best for me and the Col. If Vegas is the place this year We will have to work our family vacation into it.

SB,

When we were there a few weeks ago it was '107 at night. And that was around 8:30-9:00 when we were out walking the strip. The heat didn't bother me to much.
Posted By: The Italian Stallionette

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 08/22/07 01:37 AM

When I was there last month it was about 104 or so during the day. It cooled down at night to about 85/90. It's a dry heat, but hot is hot!!! \:\) For some reason I've always been able to take the heat more than the cold, so I don't have a problem with it. I don't know how some others (especially the men) might feel.

And yes my little DMC there most definitely is Vodka in Vegas and if you're gambling a while, you will likely get your vodka drinks for free. ;\)

Not for nothing Mrs. R, but I definitely like TIS' answer better

I have no problems with the heat, is there a lot to do outside or it it mostly all inside?
Posted By: The Italian Stallionette

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 08/22/07 01:49 AM

Mostly inside. The casinos are plenty but on the strip in 100 degree heat they are more spaced out than it appears and you do get very hot. Yet you can go into any building (most likely small casino, bar, gift shop, etc, restaurant) to cool off. You wouldn't want to spend an entire day in the heat. Trust me, inside would be preferable. \:\)

Downtown would be a must and though not as preferable as the strip, the casinos are very very close to each other and with the Fremont Experience ceiling, it's not as hot. Like I say, it doesn't bother me either, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 08/22/07 01:59 AM

The last time I was in Vegas was in 2005. I was there for the July 4th holiday for a week. It was 108 degrees in the day and like 90 -95 degrees at night.

During the day we would stay by the pool. All the hotel pools in vegas have cabanas that you can rent that usually have waitress service.

You'd be surprised between going in the pool and staying under that cabana how the heat really doesn't bother you.

I have a son who is graduating High school next June and will be getting ready to go into college. So until I know for sure what college he is going to and when he may have to leave, I cannot make a definite commitment to going to Vegas. Not just yet. ;\)

Ha ha! Mig it's actually called "The Freemont Experience" which is in downtown Vegas where. If you recall from old pictures, is where the Golden Nugget, The Four Queens and some older popular hotels are. Night time is "the" time to be there. The lights are unbeleiveable. You use to be able to drive down Freemont St. but some years ago they made a cover over the street (I just called it ceiling for lack of a better word) and prohibited any cars from driving down the street. Every half hour they have a 15 minute light show with music and everyone goes in the street and looks at a musical extravaganza.

I'll try to get a picture of downtown Vegas. I'm sure it'll ring bells when you see it. \:\) Someone else will probably beat me to it.

Mig,

It's safe on Freemont street itself and the lights truly do turn night time into daytime. You wouldn't want to venture outside the downtown area, and you'd wouldn't be able to walk to it from the strip without going through undesirable/unsafe areas. You'd need to take a cab or shuttle. Or you could do what my daughter and I did and take the "Duece" (if you recall our experience.)

I liked it last month cause the casinos were closer together and with the heat that was a plus. However, downtown must be seen at night. \:\)

I wish they would have never gotten rid of that old Golden Nugget sign though. \:\/

That I forgot that I, too, will be facing a college tuition bill next September!! And my younger is receiving Confirmation in the spring and graduating from middle school in June. The parties alone may bankrupt me long before I would get NEAR a Vegas blackjack table. And I may have hinted to the children that, since it's such a special year, we could perhaps visit la famiglia over in Sicily...

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 08/22/07 02:30 AM

Here's a perfect example about staying between Sunday and Thursday vs. Friday to Sunday :

Paris Hotel, between Sunday July 6th 2008 and Thursday July 10th 2008 is only $119 per night! That's a really great deal because Paris is a beautiful hotel ( I believe only 7 years old) and is centrally located in the middle of the strip.

Now if you want to stay in the Paris Hotel between Friday July 11th and Sunday July 14th, the room shoots up to $239 per night.

We're in basically the same boat. I knew you forgot!

Between tuitions for college, graduation parties for both kids ( daughter is graduating middle school in June), proms, etc. I'm lucky if I have enough money left to go to White Castles for dinner and check into a motel 6 for a night!

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 08/22/07 02:36 AM

That's absolutely true DC. There are always deals during the weekedays and especially in the summer.

Keep in mind too, that it's good to check a date in advance or have a couple possible dates. Even though Vegas has it's down seasons and slow times, "IF" there is a convention (and believe me they have all kinds of conventions there)rooms will be sky high and basically unavailable.

When I first moved to CA, my husband and I decided to go to Vegas on a whim. We were new to CA and Vegas was so close. \:\) We figured we would get a room when we got there.

Well, there was some car convention of some sort and there wasn't a hotel to be found. We had the kids with us and needed to stay somewhere. We found this dive on the strip and paid $100 for one night (this was in 1980 and that was a lot) \:o

I learned my lesson. Even if I were going on a whim, I'd check a couple hotels (now I can check on line) and see if they are all booked. Just food for thought.

This hotel is 34-story tower fashioned after the historic Hotel De Ville in Paris, France. The property offers authentic replicas of famous Paris landmarks including a 50 story half-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre and the Paris Opera House. Dining options range from a signature dining experience, 17 stories above the Las Vegas strip in the Eiffel Tower, to an upscale art decor rotisserie, to a stylish brasserie and a charming working bakery. This resort has 83,000 square feet of gaming space. In addition it features a fabulous on-site theater providing live entertainment as well as three lounges, clubs and bars. Guests can also enjoy shopping on a typical Parisian boulevard.

For those who have never been to the Paris Hotel here are some pics :

It's really not the rooms/food that are expensive, it's really how much you want to "lose". But yea, you can't go to Vegas without money, that's for sure. \:\) I think in a group like this, I'd tend to spend less than when I go by myself or with one other person, because I'll keep on the move more.

The biggest jackpot I ever won (odds-wise) was when I was with TIS. We were in her hotel's casino and I couldn't really find a game that interested me so I played a nickel slot poker game just to have something to do while TIS was playing her slots... (I NEVER play nickel machines). I hit a $100 jackpot (which, if it was on my usual dollar machine, would have been a $20,000 payout).

I remember that SC!!! I thought you had won more though. At least someone won!!! I keep forgetting that Vegas is for "losers".

Another argument "for" Vegas next year. They have tons of lounges with tons of entertainment in the lounges. Most lounges just require a two drink minimum which should be a piece of cake (or two drinks :p) for this group.

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 08/23/07 02:35 AM

I'd better mention that, although I've been to a couple Vegas lounges as of late, I haven't been to one for the entertainment (evening show) for a couple years, so it's possible they raised the drink minimum but whatever it is, I'm guessing is very reasonable. \:\) And Mig, you can order two cokes if you want...of course you'll pay "drink" prices.

For drinkers, they make it pretty easy. A couple years ago I was walking down the strip I stopped in the Barbary Coast (which is now King's Palace or something) and got a large 99 cent mararita. As I continued walking (and drinking :p)I passed the Frontier (also now closed)where there was an Elvis impersonator standing by the door luring people in for the afternoon lounge show. Well, how could I say no to Elvis? \:p

I had two more maragritas at the show. This impersonator wasn't bad but wasn't wonderful either. However, he had such a nice personality he made it fun. Plus after a couple more drinks he sounded fantastic!!!

Because the Hotel Lounge is NOT charging you for the entertainment that they are providing.

Now if you want to stay in the Paris Hotel between Friday July 11th and Sunday July 14th, the room shoots up to $239 per night.

Vegas has all the bases covered. If you'v noticed they make "everything" easy. They have change for bills readily available (now I sse there are no more change places but rather machines that chang any bill); they have atm machines everywhere; they try to make Vegas kid friendly starting with Circus Circus and now a couple others; pawn shops are available for those wo "need" more money. I have seen cheap "bond bailsman" signs for which I'm not quite sure that, other than trying to rob a casino, what you would need one for. This all along with free drinks if you continue to gamble.

Let's not forget too, the wedding chapels. You can get drunk, spend your money, buy a cheap wedding ring at a pawn shop and go to an ATM for more money all in one spot.

I'm sure it's not really funny to the people who may get caught into this trap. It's hard to believe, but people do. \:\(

Ok, I get it now. DC, the Saraha is way down on the strip (north strip) past the Stratosphere. That's why we haven't heard of it. \:\/ I stayed at the Saraha before and it's old but not bad. However, it's too far down the strip and away from all the bigger/better casinos. It's a long walk from the Saraha to even the Imperial Palace, let alone Cesar's and such.

Yea, I did DC. That's why I put in my original post that it doesn't exist anymore. It was a neat idea. I'm guessing the bad location and most likely poor advertising was a minus. I am surprised though that I had never heard of it, as much as I've visited Vegas. I'm just not in the know. \:\)

You did post that it didn't exist anymore. Sorry.

I never heard of it either. But then again, Vegas has grown so much over the years that it's almost impossible to know what exists in every nook and cranny.

It's like that Rat Pack show I went to see the last time I was there. It was fantastic, but the hotel (if you could call it a hotel) was off the strip on one of those side Blvds. and looked as though it was left over from the 40's. Not a place that I would stay in. But what was good about it was that the room where the Rat Pack show was performed was one of the old style showrooms with the long tables and the different level tiers which gave the show that throwback authentic nostalgic feel.

But don't be fooled by the pictures on their website because the GREEK ISLES hotel looks nothing like it is made to look on it's website!

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 08/24/07 01:01 PM

The Rat Pack is one show I've wanted to see. Hopefully I will at some point. Usually these shows continue for a very long time.

Yea, I know websites can be deceiving on some of these hotels.
I have to say though, after staying at the Bellagio, it's just like the website. Absolutely beautiful.

I don't know if it's too early or if there just isn't interest, but I had some time and took it upon myself to check around a bit. \:\) So here's a little info to toss around or dismiss or whatever, but I thought I'd start the ball rolling. \:\)

I did some random checking on Vegas on Priceline.
A r/t flight from NYC to Vegas was about $330 (could very well increase if gas prices go up). I wasn't sure that we've decided a month, but guessed August. I randomly put in the 1st & 2nd.

Below is Hotels.com link with prices for that weekend. They run around $100 - $200. Keep in mind if anyone shares a room it'll be half that. Also, keep in mind the price varies depending on when we go. if there is a convention, even though it's summer when rates are usually low, the price will skyrocket. Also remember, group rates may very well be possible as well.

"If" Vegas is in the running we should at least pick a couple potential dates to see if there is a major convention or something going on during that time.

However, I can only speak of the Bellagio and the couple other places I went. Being Vegas, I simply can't imagine it ever being as strict as everywhere else. \:\)

As far as Shula's, I don't know if there is one there, but I certainly won't have a problem. Give me my buffet and I'm good. \:p

We know SB is the Shula expert, so no need to doubt her. ;\)

Just to really really open this up, and because we are in the beginning stages, and because nothing is written in stone, I'm going to post some places I would like to visit because......well, just because. \:\)

In no particular order I'd someday like to visit these places I've never been before:

Italy/Sicily (need I say more) \:\)
Boston (just sounds/looks like a neat city)
Washington D.C. (maybe I'll throw in a protest at the Whitehouse) \:p
Denver (Just cause it's a major city I guess)
Cincinnati (to see the R&R Hall of Fame)
Memphis (Only to see Graceland)

Places I've been but would love to go again:

NYC (quickly became tied with Vegas as my favorite place to visit) \:\)
San Francisco (a totally neat looking city and good food too)
Chicago (another cool city, but wouldn't want to visit in the winter)

Anyway, that's just a few places to open up the onversation a bit.

Oh, what I would give to go back to Sicily!! It is atrociously expensive. The Euro killed it, that's for sure. I haven't been back since 2001, and I would love to see my family again. I believe the airfare alone is in the $1500 pp range, though.

Boston sounds great. Mr. Babe was there for a Celtics game two weeks ago. And if you want to get a little gambling in, Foxwoods in CT is not that far a drive from Boston.

I haven't been to Washington, DC since I was about 5. I wouldn't mind seeing it again. I understand it's pretty expensive, though (hotel-wise). My daughter is going on a class trip in the spring, and last year's trip was to Boston. She could be our tour guide!!

I hear DC is expensive as well (no, not our BB DC,) \:p Don't know how much though.

Oh, and right in my backyard compared to the others mentioned, Hollywood. I love going to Rodeo Dr, Universal Studio, Beverly Hills. Lots of sight seeing there as well. It's been several years since I've been toursting there.

2. Norfolk/VA Beach(Shula's)
3. Washington DC

Booking the Airfare along with a tour saves you some money. Otherwise, if you book it without a tour, in Summer months it's around $1000 RT. And as far as the Euro vs. the U.S. Dollar goes, while it was a bit on the high end side, it wasn't that bad, at least not as bad as it may have been for you back in 2001. I likened the cost comparison to going out in Manhattan vs. going out in the outer boroughs. It really depends on the exchange rate at the time you are going.

I didn't find it that outrageous at all.

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 12/03/07 03:20 AM

In 2001, there was still the Lira. And the dollar was VERY strong. That was such a pleasure. The exchange rate on your credit card was nothing short of amazing.

I like to go at my own pace, not necessarily a tour. I checked the Alitalia Website and for 8/1 through 8/9, the roundtrip air was $3,081 for two tickets. YIKES!!!

You do NOT eat steak in Italy. Trust me! You wouldn't want to!

As for Vegas, just as an example, if you were to go, say from a Sunday to a Thursday in July, and stayed at the Paris Hotel, you're looking at around $132 per night for the room.

And I know of a really great steak place in the Monte Carlo Hotel called Blackstone's Steakhouse. ;\)

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 12/03/07 03:31 AM

DC,

Don't you agree that any room in Vegas pricewise and otherwise(going in the summer) tops anywhere else? If two people shared a room it'd be about $65 or so each per night. And the Paris at that. \:o Not bad.

I agree about the rooms in Vegas TIS. You are so right!

As for Steak or Burgers in Italy? NO NO NO!

For some reason, the beef over in Italy is not good. Even the people who live there will tell you that it's not good and for some reason does not compare to the beef from the United States.

Even the Hard Rock Cafe in Rome imports their beef from the USA because they cannot get good beef from Europe. That's the only place that I would eat a steak or a burger while in Italy.
Posted By: Sicilian Babe

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 12/04/07 01:07 AM

Definitely NOT beef in Italy, especially if you're used to American beef. It's sort of somewhere between veal and beef, and there are no thick steaks like we are used to, more like cutlets.

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 12/04/07 02:00 AM

Just to keep things moving here, I checked Priceline.com for r/t flights from NYC to Vegas and randomly put in the first weekend in August, although unless there is some kind of convention, I'm guessing it's pretty much be accurate for the summer. The total r/t nonstop flight was Approx. $335 (including tax), which isn't bad really. Don't know if airlines give group discounts or not.
Anyway, FYI. ;\)

As long as I can afford to fly, I'll never drive again. Besides, right now with what gas costs, I'm not sure how much more flying would be. I'm about (or exactly if road signs are correct) \:p 280 miles.

Back in the day (before the gas increase)Southwest airlines would run their "friend flies free" ad to Vegas. Two people for the price of one. Won't be seeing that anymore though. \:\/

I am a planner, and in the past, with the meets we've had, I need time to search prices/fares, etc. Not to mention save money.

We were discussing Vegas last I knew, but I certainly am still open. Anyone else??? I see no harm in discussing a location.

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 01/11/08 06:24 PM

My biggest problem, TIS, is that I've been offered a job by a swimming pool contractor. If I do indeed start that job, then I don't think I could get away to Vegas, since summer is their high season. Until I know what's going on, I really couldn't commit to more than a night or two.

I really should let everyone else decide. If I can join in, I'll be thrilled.
Posted By: The Italian Stallionette

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 01/11/08 06:39 PM

Thanks for the quick reply SB. I understand your situation. Yet it is early enough still to discuss a location and to add/subtract a name or reservation she we decide on one.

To make things easier, I'm totally open to Geoff picking a location each year. I trust he'd be fair and it would eliminate the back and forth here. After all, it's the meet that matters and there are many cities I haven't seen yet that may be fun.

Or, another possiblility is to post a list several cities/sites and somehow randomly have a drawing as to where. Is it possible to do have the computer draw a city? That way it'll be settle quickly. We just need to choose cities we would like to have it in. As a matter of fact we could save the cities we all choose and then draw each year, eliminating last year's city. I like that idea. Or is that too lame? \:\/

Anyone else want to add their two cents?

Palm Spring is beautiful, but if you go in the summer you're looking at about 120 degrees. \:o Now, I love the heat, but that's a tad warm even for me. Of course, you could still visit and not go outside.

Ha ha!!! I know what you mean. Yet, for a weekend I think we'd still have fun.

In defense of Vegas (In the summer especially) you can not beat room prices. Even in the older known hotels on the strip, I know they outdo the Edison and am guessing they outdo any average NYC hotel both in price and otherwise; not to mention the cheap food and drinks(although not as cheap as it use to be). Last time I checked flights from NYC to Vegas it was about $325 - $350 r/t.

Also, having been to NYC twice, I know what the food/cabs/tips, etc. cost. In Vegas you can walk wherever you go for the most part. Then again, the gambling is another story. How much do you want to gamble?

That being said, since we've been to Philly, Chicago, NYC, NJ, do you all want to repeat or try another city?

Indianapolis is alright too, but it's very very tiny compared to somewhere like Chicago or NY especially.

Vegas sounds good, not sure about money though and if Megan is pregnant by the time the BB Weekend rolls around then we most likely wouldn't go unless it was close.

Gulf Shores, Alabama is nice, and we'd probably be able to get a free condo for me and Megan if we could make it.

I am ok with the R&R Hall of Fame. I am such a fan of the music from especially the 60's & 70's, (Not to mention any Elvis memorbilia) \:\) I'm guessing I would love browsing there. Mig, do you know of any sites in the area (or I suppose any good bars for our gang). We don't want like at Itasca, where nothing else was in the area.

P.S. But...the Football HOF??? I'll take R&R any day. ;\)

*Here's a link to the R&R HOF with HOF entrance and one night hotel (including breakfast) for two people at several different hotels. For those of who travel alone I'm guessing it'd be the same room price, but not sure. Still, not too bad. Ha!

Don't worry, I'm not stupid. In January of 1991, me and 3 of my buddies drove out there last minute, to see the Giants spank the Bears 31-3 in the playoffs. The fans were absolutely brutal, much more obnoxious than Boston fans are to New Yorkers.

I almost panicked and dropped Giancana's name, until I realized he'd already been dead for 15 years.

Lemme know when you're in the area... I'll go with ya.

I went there about 6 weeks ago with a friend. It was her first time there and she liked it, but I didn't.... its not as good as it used to be. I wrote them an email, complaining about the quality of the pizza. They never responded.

I'll keep going back, though.... its still better than what I get out here on Long Island.

I've never eaten there but I've heard Harry Carey's restaurant is pretty good. If you want to drive an hour into Indiana I could show you a few awesome local joints.

Edit: Gage is nice if you're looking for something exotic. I think they have one chicken dish, the rest is stuff like elk, duck, venison. The Elk is excellent. It's on Michigan Ave.

Avoid Shula's.

Well I woundn't mind attending one of these get-togethers depends on where it's held at.

Las Vegas could be an option for me, Chicago is an option as well since I have a cousin who lives there. Although that might not be viable since chicago has already been done.

It doesn't really matter what time of year it's held either weather doesn't bother me whether it's 30 below zero(which is best as I love the cold weather)or if it's 110.

Well, here are a few places I can suggest:

Italian - Carmine's - My wife and I go to a few Italian restaurants but our favorite lately has been Carmine's.

Comfort Food - Mike Ditka's - Get your burgers, steaks, pork chops, sandwiches here.

Greek - In the western part of downtown Chicago, you'll find Greek Town and my favorite restaurant there is Costa's Greek Dining & Bar. It's kind of pricey compared to the other restaurants in the area, but I feel Costa's food is the best. It's a bit prosaic for me to say, but you should try the gyros.

Late Night Food - In the heart of Lincoln Park, you'll find the The Weiner's Circle. The place is a bit of a dive and you don't go there expecting service (actually, they're known for their comically rude service), but the place is famous for college and late night partyers. Get your Chicago-style hot dogs here.

Pizza - I know I've had this discussion with my East Coast bretheren, but I have to defend my hometurf here - you have to try Chicago-style pizza. It's a meal all by itself and you don't have to scrape off the layer of grease that comes with the New York-style pizza. ;\) \:p

In truth, I'm not a big fan of pizza in general so I'm just joking with you East Coasters (just to let you know before you get your panties in a bunch \:p ). With that said, I do find the pizza at Giordano's tasty. If you're ever in Chicago, you have to have the deep dish. Why, I don't know? That's what people around here always say.

Cuban - Cafe 28 - I'm also a big fan of Cuban food. There are a couple of places that are a bit more "authentic" (read: less trendy) than Cafe 28, but they aren't in the best part of town so I wouldn't suggest tourists going there. ;\)

Tapas - Cafe Iberico - If you like tapas/latin food, you can't go wrong with Iberico. Cheap sangria too.

I hope this helps. \:\)

Fantastic, DS!

I'll pm you as it gets closer to April, maybe I can bring you a Met hat to show my appreciation. \:p

Speaking of baseball; which, if any, of the these places are close to Wrigley? And how about that old stand-by: the best pub, in the vicinity?
Posted By: Don Sicilia

Re: GBB 5th Annual Weekend 2008 - 01/14/08 09:49 PM

Most of the places I suggested are in Downtown Chicago (about 10-15 minute drive south of Wrigley), except for Cafe 28, which is about a 5 minute drive north of Wrigley.

I'm not much of a beer drinker myself, so I wouldn't be the person to ask about which bars/pubs are the best. There are a lot of them within a one-block radius of Wrigley so I'm sure you won't find any trouble finding a couple of Cubs fans to 'rassle with. ;\)

I have heard good things about this one in particular: Goose Island

There'll never be anything like Spumoni Gardens anywhere else, but I hafta admit some of the deepdish pizza I've had in the Chicago area was pretty good.

My ex-wife was from Chicago, and I've sampled many of the area's pizzas over the years.... I prefer New York style (probably because thats what I was raised on) but the second city has a decent claim to good pizza.

FWIW - I've been dying for Nathan's french fries lately. I went to my doctor today, and lo and behold (and unbeknownst to me) there's a Nathan's two blocks away from his office. Wanna guess what I had (and enjoyed tremendously) after the appointment?

This was my neighborhood pizzeria growing up. It used to be called the Half Moon, then in the 80's they expanded and re-named themselves the Full Moon. They're on the corner of 187th Street and Arthur Avenue, one block from my old apartment walk-up. I still get the pizza at least a couple of times a month.

Thats because you're too cheesy.

For me, the enjoyment of a good pizza is its sauce, not the cheese.

EDIT: The Spumoni Gardens pizza only LOOKS like it has too much sauce... thats because the cheese is UNDER the sauce.

Full Moon has the great pizza, but I do have to tell you that my local pizzeria, Martio's, is darned good. They make their regular pie with a delicious thin, crispy crust and excellent sauce. They also make their gelato from scratch each morning, and they have the best Italian ice I've had since leaving the Bronx.

The last site is of a place called Revello's in Old Forge, which is my favorite of the many Old Forge pizzas. I don't know the people in the photo, but one of them is drinking a Yuengling (see the lager thread). I haven't been there in a long time. It was one pizza that I wouldn't put an extra topping on.

Personally, I am planning a Vegas run in late June or July,(summer rates are great) but if there is a chance we'd meet there I'll hold off. Although by previous posts I'm thinking not.

In any case, I would like to consider wherever the destination is, if this is still on. Keep in mind for those who travel from real far, it's more than a weekend away most likely.

I can be in Vegas at any time (~240 mile drive for me), but not the week of July 17-24, when we'll be renting a house at the Jersey Shore. I should have gotten that rental free, considering all the real estate tax I'm still paying on the NJ house that we still haven't sold.

I've purposely kept out of the discussion because of my situation, but would we consider going back to Jersey? I loved the hotel, and there were certainly tons of nice bars and restaurants. Or maybe Philly? I certainly wouldn't object to another dinner at La Veranda. It's still the best dining experience I've ever had.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. I'll go ahead with my own Vegas plans then.

I certainly understand your situation. Vegas, for me, is kind of like Jersey or Philly for you, a "I can pick up and go" type thing. It does get costly and requires more planning going long distances. \:\/

There's a small airport right here in Prescott serves private aircraft. But recently, Mesa Airlines got a franchise to fly from here to Phoenix and Vegas. Prop aircraft. The Vegas flight stops at Kingman. Now the town's in negotiation with another carrier for flights to LA.

They're trying to push Kingman out?

I keep saying I'm gonna just check in here and let you guys do the back & forth, but FWIW: \:p

The only time I could attend IF it's a far away trip (as oppose to a weekend sprint) would be anytime from June 20th or so thru July 20th (I don't remember specific dates but that's close). I can't make any August trips due to work. Ok, that's all I wanted to say. I know it's been August past years though, so do what the spirit moves you to do. No hard feelings since I can't really make any promises at this time anyway.

I can't totally promise I won't be back here to post either. What good am I? \:p

TIS, if it were on the East Coast, and it was in July some time, would you be able to make it?

Geoff & SB

August is always a bad month for me, since I return to school after a month off in July (June 20 - July 20. Acutally I go back to work on July 25 I think). Also, after being gone for two weeks during my brother's illness I'd feel especially awkward asking for more time so soon after returning.

Yes, I would CONSIDER going back East again. However, keep in mind, for you guys if it's in your backyard so to speak, it's easy for you to quickly plan. For me, I am a planner, and like to check fares, dates, etc out before I go on a cross country trip. Know what I mean?? I think maybe the same for Mig, since she is the other "traveler". \:\)

I am planning a Vegas trip in late June or July as well (which is my backyard, so to speak). It would be nice to at least have a Date set for the BB meet so I can at least know the dates won't conflict.

Again, I understand the situation here and realize everything can't be built around my schedule. So, once you guys set a date, at least I can work from there and see what it will cost. If it's meant to be it will come to pass, if not, it won't. ;\) Barring any family emergency, or unforseen event, I'm willing to give it my best shot.

Oh, and boy would I love to go to the UK meet with Yogi, Mick and Chopper. Maybe someday. \:\)
