Van Halen reuniting with Roth

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Billboard) -- A deal is almost set for David Lee Roth to return to the Van Halen fold for a summer tour of amphitheaters, sources told Billboard.com

They said a contract could be signed as early as Wednesday for tour promoter Live Nation to produce a 40-date trek, which would mark Roth's first outing with the rock band in more than 20 years.

Spokeswomen for Roth and the band said they were unable to provide any confirmation.

Guitarist Eddie Van Halen's 15-year-old son Wolfgang has stepped in for original bassist Michael Anthony in the new incarnation of the group, which also features Eddie's brother Alex Van Halen on drums.

Van Halen last toured in 2004 with vocalist Sammy Hagar, Roth's replacement, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore. Hagar refused to collaborate further with the Van Halen brothers after the tour's completion, although he has consistently played live with Anthony in recent years. The warring factions may wind up meeting in public in March when Van Halen is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I'm not too excited about Wolfgang on bass, I'd rather have Michael Anthony on bass any day of the week, but I'll take a Van Halen tour with David Lee Roth. Hell yes.

Also, the rumored Police tour might be something as well.

Thing is, do people care about the POLICE reunion? If they do, cool.

Otherwise, the VH/Roth reunion is nice.

Yet I hate that the Pink Floyd re-union aint gonna ever happen. Shit, not even the Clash, who would have killed financially if they had gotten back together(but yeah, Strummer's death killed that possibility).

I feel as if I've seen that. Did someone post that in the last Van Halen reunited thread?

Either way, never been a fan. I've always felt their sound was way too tainted by the string of crap that was the 1980s.

The kid will do fine. Hell, Feliciano's band is made up of his own brood, and they're around the same age.

Anyway, I assume this "reunion" comes on the heels of VH's election to the Rock Hall of Fame.

I give it a week into touring before they start arguing, or DLR challenges another member to a fist-fight. Most likely Wolfgang.

Wolfgang would kick DLR's butt. He has to be tough with a name like Wolfgang.

In this day and age the kid could get arrested if he starts singing, "I'm hot for teacher".

Van Halen reunion tour, with David Lee Roth back in the fold after 22 years, is in the works, with a Las Vegas launch looking good.

A late April date at the Palms' new venue, The Pearl, is "99 percent" likely, a source said.

It would be the latest coup for Palms owner George Maloof, who will open the 2,500-seat venue with a lineup that includes Tool, Evanescence, Gwen Stefani and possibly Van Halen, all in the first month.

A 40-date tour is being discussed.

Roth fronted the band from 1974 to 1985 before going solo. He was close to rejoining about 11 years ago, but a blowup caused another rift.

Van Halen's last tour, in 2004, grossed about $40 million, with Sammy Hagar as the lead.

Tool would open the Palms venue March 16-17, Evanescence would follow on March 17, and Stefani is set for the April 21 grand opening.

It is rumored that along with their 2007 Tour, that their will be a "Best Of: 1978-1984" CD single released . . .

I am anticipating that the Corporate selections for the 1978-1984 "Best Of" CD single, at 78min, will simply follow the song selections previously made for "Best Of: Vol. 1" and "BOBW" (which were mainly "Greatest Hits" collections, and --not-- their "Best Of", imo), plus, some other commerical / corporate rock from 1978-1984. (BTY, I really do like Everybody Wants Some, ATBL, Jamies' Cryin', Eruption, Panama, Beautiful Girls, and Happy Trails . . .)

--- My Anticipated Corporate "Greatest Hits" Selections
for the Van Halen "Best Of 1978-1984" Single CD---

Eruption
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
Runnin' With The Devil
Dance The Night Away
And The Cradle Will Rock . . .
Unchained
Jump
Panama
You Really Got Me
Hot For Teacher
(Oh) Pretty Woman
Beautiful Girls
Jamie's Cryin'
I'll Wait
Dancing In The Street
Everybody Wants Some ! !
You're No Good
Spanish Fly
Secrets
So This Is Love ?
Ice Cream Man
Women In Love . . .
Happy Trails

A 40 date tour? it'll never last that long.

DLR will end up getting kicked off, way sooner than that.

Eddie's son filling in for MA? Oh good grief that has catastrophe written all over it.

The bass lines are simple enough, but not sure I want to hear him try and sing Michael Anthony's signature backups.

If they play near me, tho, I hope it's an early date in the tour.

Re: the reunion tour - I'm not sure who's more pathetic these days. After his disastrous radio stint, I was leaning more toward DLR. But upon reconsideration, I say that Eddie Van Halen wins hands-down for the following reasons: after 3 lead singers, he returns to the original lead singer fired some 20 years ago. Then, throw in the firing of a professional bassist/background singer (Michael Anthony) and replacing Anthony with EVH's son. Eddie - I have news for you. You and your group have been irrelevant since 1994. Nobody cares any more.

This is from Wilkipedia:

Anthony's future in Van Halen is uncertain as he recently revealed he only played on 3 tracks on the Van Halen III album and didn't play on any of the new songs for the The Best of Both Worlds compilation. Anthony also revealed he was only allowed to participate in the 2004 reunion tour if he signed a reduced royalties contract.

Mike spent the summer of 2006 touring as a member of "The Other Half" along with Sammy Hagar. They performed songs from both the Hagar and Roth eras of Van Halen. At the June 4th, 2006 show in Phoenix, AZ, for example, Mike sang Roth's vocal parts on Running with the Devil and Hagar sang Mike's backup harmonies.

On September 8th 2006, Eddie Van Halen announced that his son Wolfgang is now Van Halen's official bass player shortly afterwards stating he had no more hard feelings towards David Lee Roth and would be happy to 'play a few gigs' with him. On January 24, 2007 it was announced that Van Halen was reuniting for a tour with original frontman Roth and Wolfgang taking Anthony's place. Van Halen's publicist confirmed that Wolfgang will be the band's bass player for the 2007 tour, but only time will tell whether the fans will come to see the show without Mike.

In addition, on December 12, 2006 Guitarist magazine has 'officially confirmed that long-time VH bassist Michael Anthony has been ousted from the fold and [been] replaced by Wolfgang Van Halen, the 15 year old son of guitar wizard Edward.'

Well, apparently rumors are now flying that the re-formed THE POLICE will premiere at the Grammy Awards on Febuary 11th.

Thing is, there is credence for this. Remember the KISS return to their costumes/make-up/theatrics about 10 years ago at the Grammys?

I remember that - they did a good job of making it seem spontaneous. That was the only time I saw Kiss in concert because I was too young to go when they were at the height of their 1970's popularity. They put on a hell of a spectacle in 1996 (two Cleveland shows sold out in 30 minutes) and put a lot of effort into their musicianship. Kiss will never be thought of as great musicians, but they were great performers.

Van Halen will be lucky to have as successful reunion tour as Kiss did in 1996-97. Remember their awkward appearance at the Grammy's with Roth in 1996 where it appeared that Roth was coming back, all the while Eddie VH looking like he wanted to kill Roth on that stage?

Brwne Byte, I also hear that the Titanic sank.

Goombah, shit now I'm expecting for Roth and VH to start fighting each other by June. Anyone willing to bet me on this?

Well, USA TODAY confirmed it. The Police will be at the Grammys.

Knowing alot of people that grew up in the ole 1980s at my workplace and around me...sure you all have read how I've been silly pissing at this Police reunion, but it might actually be the surprise major gangbuster money-maker tour of the summer.

Hell, better than Roth/VH at least.

Re: David Lee Roth reunites with Van Halen - 02/10/07 02:00 AM

I am basically a Classic VH fan. I imagined that if I was to pick the VH songs that could be overburned onto a 90 minute CDR, then this exclusive list, would be the songs that would make it onto that CD (for simplicity's sake, the songs are listed in album order, although I would fine tune that order later. . .) In other words, these are the VH songs that I would want to hear, Now! This is not a reminisence of what I would have put on a 90 minute cassette in the year 1984..... This is NOW !

------- MY 90 MINUTE BEST OF THE REST of VH ---------

Eruption
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
I'm The One
Jamie's Cryin'
Atomic Punk
Feel Your Love Tonight
Little Dreamer
Bottoms Up!
Light Up The Sky
Spanish Fly
D.O.A.
Beautiful Girls
Everybody Wants Some!!
Romeo Delight
Take Your Whiskey Home
Mean Street
Sinner's Swing!
Hear About It Later
Hang 'Em High
Cathedral
Little Guitars (Intro)
Little Guitars
The Full Bug
Happy Trails
Top Jimmy
Girl Gone Bad
House Of Pain

It's really too bad that they didn't decide to release a double CD Best Of on March 27th. Instead there will be just be one CD, covering -only- their MTV and Radio Greatest Hits.... But, for me, the real legacy of VH is their Hard Rock, which separates them from the rest. VH's commercial hits are really no better or no worse than any other bands commercial hits...(Aerosmith, Journey, Def Leppard, etc.)

But, the 2nd CD could have been "The Best of the Rest", and hence a true "Best of Both Worlds: 1978-1984". That 2-CD release would have pleased both the old and the new fan, the casual radio fan, and, the Hard Rock Vh fan...

Eddie Van Halen enters rehab
By Dean GoodmanThu Mar 8, 10:49 PM ET

Eddie Van Halen said on Thursday he would enter rehab "to work on myself," a move that appears to rule out a reunion by his troubled band when it is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next week.

The announcement came a month after he and former Van Halen singer David Lee Roth, his longtime antagonist, said they would tour North America in the summer. Within weeks, speculation arose the plans had run aground.

The Dutch-born Van Halen, 52, who has long battled alcoholism and survived a bout with tongue cancer, said in an open letter to fans he wanted to do right by them.

"I have always and will always feel a responsibility to give you my best. At the moment I do not feel that I can give you my best. That's why I have decided to enter a rehabilitation facility to work on myself, so that in the future I can deliver the 110 percent that I feel I owe you and want to give you."

He added: "Some of the issues surrounding the 2007 Van Halen tour are within my ability to change and some are not. As far as my rehab is concerned, it is within my ability to change and change for the better."

The letter was released by his spokeswoman and girlfriend, Janie Liszewski, who did not respond to requests for further information.

The band, famed for such '80s hits as "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher," is scheduled to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York on Monday. The appearance had aroused speculation, given the hostility between Van Halen and Roth, who quit in the mid-'80s, and also between Van Halen and Roth's successor, Sammy Hagar, who was ousted a decade later.

The band, which has not released an album in nine years, parted ways recently with bass player Michael Anthony, and Van Halen installed his 15-year-old son, Wolfgang. The lineup is rounded out by Van Halen's brother, drummer Alex Van Halen.

In a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Eddie Van Halen said he had entered rehab twice. He recalled his only drunken-driving arrest came after he had left an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, appalled by everyone's sob story, and stopped at a bar for a few shots.

"I always got hammered to be able to cope," he told the magazine. "I have zero social skills and I don't know how to act, so I get drunk. And then I make a real ass out of myself."

I blame this on Adam Sandler's ex-girlfriend in "The Wedding Singer". He warned her to take off his Van Halen T-Shirt when they broke up fearing she would jinx the band,,, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! They were one of my favorite bands back in the day. Pre-Hagar that is.

Re: David Lee Roth reunites with Van Halen - 07/05/12 10:35 PM

In his book Hagar speaks of the Van Halen brothers being very jealous of his outside business interests to the point where they would instruct managers to prevent or intercept any questions to Hagar. He says the brothers fought each other a lot too and would, when they didn't want anyone to know what they were fighting about, just curse each other out in Dutch.

In Hagar's account Eddie is very controlling and way too sensitive and something of a passive-aggressive personality.

Everybody seems to have a pop at Sammy Hagar being in VH, yet i always quite liked him. I know he was no prime DLR but he had a good voice and a sense of humour, something the Van Halen boys seem to lack!!

Re: David Lee Roth reunites with Van Halen - 07/08/12 02:37 AM

Hagar had better vocal range and could play guitar, unlike DLR. Roth's greatest asset was not his voice, but rather his persona and ability to put his stamp on a song (Ice Cream Man, Everybody Wants Some, Unchained, Panama). While Hagar was a better musical fit, DLR had that indefinable "it" factor. Dave's live stage presence was one of rock's best.
