The teacher and the pupil...

The teacher and the pupil... - 02/26/02 10:50 PM

After rereading the book recently for the first time in many years, I am more convinced than ever that if indeed another GF installment is filmed, it should be concentrated on the period from when Michael leaves Sicily to when he reunites with Kay as a poilished and debonair "Don in waiting".

For those who have never read the book, the plot that ultimately gets Michael back in the states without facing any charges for the McCluskey/Sollozo killing is simply great. This is accomplished using the "negotiators" that are mentioned during the planning of the murder, and is very complex and detailed; in a word, Brilliant.

Then to follow that up with the tutoring by Vito to his successor is most intriguing to me.

Yes, the tale of the Bocchicchio clan and how they provided Michael's ticket home is a great little story within a story. There's also an intriguing part in which Michael apparently owns a brownstone or townhouse in Little Italy, to which he takes Kay for their first post-Sicily liaison, and the people in the neighborhood seem to know him and respect him. Maybe it was the Ravenite Social Club? lol

Bring Michael home was more then just jumping on a plane...Book does tell the story and it should have been added, even if it was shorten a bit. It was very clever....

The townhouse is described as looking pretty bad from the outside, but very luxurious inside. The book also says that prior to moving the family to the mall in Long Beach, Vito had moved his family from Little Italy to the Bronx.

The novel is amazing. And if they had known how popular the films would be, they would have made them longer.

Yeah, and it still amazes me that Paramount had so little confidence that GF would be a big hit, especially since the novel had set records by the time they were getting ready to roll. MGM had no such lack of confidence in "Gone With The Wind."
