How is the novel different from the movie?

Can't answer that in a note, but the main differences lie in the depth of the story and the little details. While the storylines are "similar", in the book it's as if you're going into their lives and seeing everything firsthand, whereas in the movie you're seeing a finished product that a director and an editor created for you to see the overall picture. Like, in Godfather Part II, you see the beginning of the film in 1958 aswell as in the 1920s with Vito when he came back from Italy. In the book, it describes what he talked about at dinner (Like when he says he doesn't know who killed Fanucci when his friends ask him), or is talks about how Santino threatened him by saying he knew that he'd killed the old Don back in the early days. Then there's simply more meat it in, when it comes to dialogue. You see Michael say things he didnt in the film and whatnot. I highly recommend the book, it gives you a better idea of what the film is all about

Yes definetly so, it's like watching the movie, and wondering what does that mean and why did he do that?, but when you read the book, it's the equivilant of having the script with all the editors notes and special cuts. I seen the movie before I *read the book*, and I'm glad I did, becuase the book is just so extraordinary that even the greates film of all time would still not live up to it, it also allowed me to see the faces and Puzo's descriptions of everything, much more evidently. This aside, I must plead with you to read the novel if you haven't already.

Kay is at the Corleone residence and surprises Michael,while in the movie he surprises her by the school where she worked.

Tom is a lot colder in the book, and Johnny Fontane, Lucy Mancini and that "doc that fixed [Michael's] face" are larger characters.

There are lot of little differences. And some things addded in a book that you can't really show in a movie like character's thoughts and that Apollonia was newly pregnant.

You know Amy people always say the book was better in the movie. I mean it's very different in way sometimes you can get bored at certain parts in the book, but it is a good book. But I think the movie is better I mean you can just watch that over and over again. Do ya understand what I'm saying?

You gotta read the book, but some points of difference:

Lucy Mancini has a large part in the book but a bit part in the movie.

Fredo is a totally different character in the book. He's big and well-built (but still stupid). In the movie hes a bumbling idiot.

In the movie, as tough as they try to make Luca Brasi out to be, he still gives the impression that he has a soft side. In the book hes pure evil. I won't spoil it for you but I'll just tell you three words: baby, towel, ax.

Fontaine is a major character and one of the most interesting, multi-layered characters in the book. In the movie he has a bit part and comes off like a pompous fool. No wonder Sinatra got pissed at Coppolla.

No Dr. Jules Segal in the movie.

No Nino Valenti in the movie.

Also in the book, Wolz is some kind of child molester. A reference to this is made in one of the cuts that ended up in the Godfather saga, but never made it into the first-cut movie.

The book discusses the Corleone's relationship with the Cappone family out of Chicago, but not in the movie.

Simply put, you just gotta read the book.

I read the book after having already seen the movie a dozen or so times. It was so beneficial, it gives so much more information and little details; and there really isn't that much conflict.

Oh sure there are some things that make you say to yourself, "wait a minute, that can't be," or "that didn't happen in the movie."

Overall though, I would highly recommend reading the book.

There is also an excellent scene in the book where the two boys who tried to rape Bonasera's daughter are beaten almost to death for their crime. And the explanation of how The Don treated Al Capone as a mere hoodlum. The book is actually probably better than the film. And I believe the film to be the best of all time

The Book also shows Paulie Gatto as someone who could have wound up a Capo if he didn't become a traitor. It also makes a small mention of Fredo's wife Deanna Dunn as a hollywood slut screwing around with Nino Valenti at a movie showing
