Tony in love with Gina - 11/08/04 04:35 PM

Does any one feel that Tony deep down inside was in love with his sister and could not bare to see her with anyone. or was he just trying to be the father figuer in her life.

He did have a deep love for his sister, but a brotherly/fatherly kind of love (not the same love he initially had for Elvira). He was just overprotective of her. Like Manny said, he didn't want her hanging out with certain kinds of people, growing up like him. He wanted more for her & unfortunately, he never got it.

I'm affraid i cant agree on that. Tony was in love with her sister, more then a sisterlike love. You can see it in he's eyes when Gina comes in, in the last part of the movie. The part where she says: is this what you want tony

i agree more with irish because you say in that last part you can see it in his eyes. my question is see what you do have to remember he was fucked up big time on coke and with the amount he was doin at once just doesnt fit right with saying that you could see his love in his eyes.

I watched Scarface last night and I am now conviced that he did love her or was just crazy about her. because he did not want any one with her. knowing that she is going to do what ever she wanted he should have been happy that she was with Manny at least he would of know the person she was with. Because even at the end he feels bad for killing Manny. so yeah in the end he to me was in love with his sister..

True, Tony knew what kinda man Manny was, and I think that's EXACTLY why he didn't want her hanging around him. He was a womanizer & a criminal just like Tony was. Tony didn't want his sister around people like that. As Manny told Gina in the car, she should date someone like "a lawyer, a doctor, or a banker," someone who had something going for them. Tony wanted more for his sister & I still don't believe he had anything more than brotherly love for her.

This topic has been discussed many times before. Tony was NOT in love with Gina in the way that is being implied here. Tony had an obsession with his sister which was about his wanting to protect her from the world that he lived in. In Tony's mind Gina was the only pure and honest thing left in his life, innocence that had not been polluted by his world. This is the reason that he was so obsessed and protective over her. Yes he loved Manolo like a brother, but Manolo was a part of his tainted world and if Manolo was to take up with Gina, that would bring her into the tainted life that Tony and Manolo led. He did not love his sister in the sexual way that is implied. Yes, after Tony shoots Manolo, Gina walks into his office and says to him "You wanna f**k me Tony?" and what is Tony's reply? "what you talkin?"
He did not think of her in the way that she thought he did.

Oliver Stone made a mess of the Tony-sister theme in his reworking of the Scarface story. Stone always gets too kinky when it comes to sex in his scripts (see the scene between Nick Nolte and J Lo in U Turn). The incest theme is already there in the original Scarface (1932), but Stone takes it over the top in the 1983 version. It should have remained an understated theme. De Palma should have demanded that Stone rewrite the "F**k me tony" scene.
