Re: the greatest gangster film ever made..yes/no - 08/06/11 02:36 PM

No.
To me there is a difference between Gangster and Mafia films.
GF I & II are the greatest "Mafia" movies ever, with Goodfellas a close runner up.

As far as the greatest "Gangster" movie, I think that distinction goes to "Once Upon A Time In America"

Good film yes but certainly not the best..

I would agree that, despite its faults (caused mostly by production woes and shortcomings)OUaTiA is the greatest gangster film - a true epic, imo. It transcends the genre. As a study of an individual psychopath involved in the gangster life, Scarface and White Heat are tops for me.

Scarface is a punk movie, compared to the real mafia movies like Godfather, Donnie Brasco, Goodfellas. Scarface is good within its own genre.

i never liked it actually. to be honest i dont even like scorcese.hes overrated and his films are products of the ability of the actors. look at meanstreets. fantastic. the departed? give me a fucking break.look at the talent he has. the two worst films dixaprio has ever been in have been scorceses. where by the way he played basically the same character. all his films are made just to appeal to whitecollar men and sheltered teenagers who think hitmen and pints of fake blood are sexy. if youve ever had to sit next to a friend and tell him hes going to be alright while your trying to plug a knife wound in his stomach with your shirt, you start to appreciate the more 'tv friendly' movies.

I hate Scarface, they took Linda Mastrantonio "who played Tony Montana's sister" and Al Pacino "both whom are 100% Italian" and made them be Cuban...wtf. Same thing in Carlito's Way, Al Pacino plays a Puerto Rican. Thats just stupid to me, I don't know why, just erks me. Godfather 3 they take Andy Garcia and make him play an Italian its just like wtf.

Haha I'm Cuban and I think the same thing

Pacino did a good job with the accent though, but he looks Italian. White Cubans are Spaniards and they just have a different phenotype. Andy Garcia and Stephen Bauer are good examples

Re: the greatest gangster film ever made..yes/no - 02/19/14 08:09 PM

Hey ChiSox74 maybe you can answer this question. I always been confused as to Cubans "white Cubans" and "White Ricans" like Benicio Del Torro, Andy Garcia, Gloria Estefan, etc etc. Most White Cubans and Ricans are of Spaniard and French decent and both of those country's are white country's so lets say a white Cuban etc fills out a application for a job at lets say Dunbar armored security on Chicago ave. Are they going to put down Hispanic or white? If not white, why not?
Posted By: ChiSox74

Re: the greatest gangster film ever made..yes/no - 02/20/14 12:12 AM

These days more and more applications are putting hispanic(white) or hipanic (other), but a lot of them still just have hispanic.

Hispanic is a misused term. They called hispanic a race when they really just meant from Spanish speaking countries. They confused a linguistic category with a racial one.

The worst is Latin. I'm considered a Latin even though your ancestors are the true Latins. You're not considered a Latin even though your ancestors gave my ancestors the Latin language and culture.

How does that make any sense?

Re: the greatest gangster film ever made..yes/no - 02/24/14 08:58 PM

@ChiSox74. HA makes about as much sense as tits on a mule. That's cool that you know about that whole Latin thing. Most people don't know that Southern Italians and Sicilians are actually the original Latins and what not.

My favorite movie was Public Enemy with James Cagney. A lot of little things in it made it great. Have to see it a number of times to see it all.

Eli Walach a Jew played a great Latino bandits in many movies. Magnificent 7 among them.

Robert DeNiro will play an Irish guy in the movie the irishman. He played another Irishman in Goodfellas.

People are complaining about that as well. Also the Irishman the real guy is 6'4". Bob is under 6 feet people are even complaint about that

I think its great, it really is. But its the best drug trade movie I've seen. The main focus of the movie is cocaine, which qualifies it as a drug trade movie. My favorite mafia movie is The Departed, favorite gangster movie is The Public Enemy. The best mafia movies are The Godfather 1 and 2, GoodFellas and The Departed
