It's interesting that people can say they like old movies, but maybe have completely different eras in mind. I like old movies, meaning from the 1930s and 1940s. I mostly like comedies - Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and directors like Frank Capra and Preston Sturges.

I feel the same way Meyer. I haven't been to a theater to see a movie in years. I have my favorites and that's pretty much the movies I watch. I've never been a big movie guy anyways.

I'm the same way with music too. The older the better. Modern stuff? No chance.

True enough Pete. There are probably some Board members who like to watch "old movies" such as the original Star Wars. Well, as you state, old movies to me are those from the 30s and 40s. Those black and whites were superb. Also, yes, I am critical of today's genre of movies. So, so many are trash and simply vehicles to appeal to a niche audience to generate revenue, not artistry.

I'm reminded of that episode of Two and a Half Men when Charlie is watching Jaws with his nephew Jake who is about 10 years old. Jake is bored. Why? Well, as he says, we're forty minutes into the movie and have not yet seen the shark.

The old ones are better for sure !
And i also haven't been in the theater for years...

When I can't find something to watch I go right to Turner classic. I love those old movies. The way they dressed, spoke, carried themselves, and the way the homes eyes decorated. Most of the movies are American, but they talk with an accent I can't put my finger on.

What you're hearing is "The Mid-Atlantic Accent" that was taught in US boarding schools and to stage actors in the early part of the 20th century:

That is interesting. I've never heard of mid atlantic accent before but I too love the way the people talked in the 30's and 40's movies.

One thing I noticed about many of those old movies is how fast the actors talked. Cagney was one of those. I wonder if that was just particular actors or if it was the result of actor training or just alot of words in the script.

When Netflix adds one of these old classics, I always watch them. I saw ''To Kill a Mockingbird'' and ''Vertigo'' for example a couple of months ago..

I get a lot of nostalgic feelings when watching these movies from the 50's and 60's, which is very strange because I was born in the 80's myself..

I get nostalgic when I watch a good early 80s movie cause that's when I was king of the world, girls were hot w/big hair,,heavy metal ruled the airwaves, in my 20s , & in a rock band w/ a house in the Wildwoods N.J...chicks everywhere & good times everyday & always felt indestructible ....no fuckin hiphop culture bullshit & TV was worth watching....which is another reason I escape to good old T.C.M. best channel on the tube.

I'm strictly an old movie guy. The last time I went to a theater to see a new movie (first time in over five years) was to watch "Blade Runner 2049. Wish I hadn't. mad Conversely, last week I watched "Advise and Consent" (1962) from my collection. Outstanding! Gimme W.C. Fields over Jim Carey any day.

We were just discussing that. Like with the movie 30 Days of Night. Seems like They had to make it almost like a soap opera drama. Meaning that films today have to have relationship drama in it when really it doesn’t need to be in there....it doesn’t really even relate to the main theme.

I find myself not going to the theatre like I used nor buying movies like I used. Films have just become so different today and even long.

But on another note, while watching an old tape from like 1991 I saw some of the commercials from back then. The one thing that seems so different is car commercials. Back in the early 1990s car commercials seemed so ....... temptation like ...... almost sexy in a way ...... like come on you know you want this car.......look at what it can do. Now a days it seems like car commercials are just style and how fast and smooth the car can go in the great open outdoors.

I guess the earliest talking movie I've watched has been The Cocoanuts with the Marx Brothers. That was 1929. I think the best really old talkie is the original King Kong (1933). I'll watch that any time I see it's on.

Really good and had some old time vaudeville actors who were fantastic

Re: i am the only one who enjoy old movies ? - 03/13/19 08:18 PM

Always loved old movies. Probably always will.

A few days ago, TCM had a gem for the first time: the restored 1930 King of Jazz, a musical revue starring Paul Whiteman, arguable the most popular bandleader of his day.

Incredible.

First off, it was in an early form of Technicolor that was not sensitive to all colors of the spectrum (that wouldn't come along until 1934). No blue or yellow here - primarily shades of red, green and turquoise. However, the colors look amazing is this restoration. Much of the film's original camera negative still survives and that was the primary source used, though when other source prints were used, the difference in quality is apparent. Though the soundtrack appears to have survived intact, a few missing minutes of visual material are represented by black & white still photographs. A disconcerting fact is, for whatever reason, the men wear just as much overdone makeup as the women. All that rouge and lipstick! Yegh!

It's also Bing Crosby's film debut (as a member of the singing trio, The Rhythm Boys), and aside from all the face paint, you'll see why the studios made him wear a toupee when he became a Hollywood leading man a short time later.

This film turned up on cable at least 30 years ago; that's when I first saw it. King of Jazz fascinated me, though it was choppy and somewhat shorter. I think the (unrestored) copy floating around YouTube may be similar to the one I saw years ago. Regardless, if you've never seen the film, only see the restored version! The difference is like night and day. And they really don't make them like this anymore.

Check this out:

Some things in the film might be considered politically incorrect by today standards, but I say, what the hell! You've been warned.

Now if I could just get past Rhapsody in Green... whistle

"Yankee Doodle Dandy" is the movie I've watched most in my life and I never tire of watching Cagney's movements and energy. But it is "Angels with Dirty Faces" that really impressed me. Cagney grew up on the eastside of NYC, and he was a tough kid, a product of the streets. He was already an established star when "Dirty Faces" was being filmed. The "Dead End" kids had become 'famous' at that time (mainly from their portrayals of tough city kids in the wonderful movie "Dead End") and they were a rowdy bunch who were enjoying their newly found fame and notoriety for being "hooligans". They disrupted the movie set with their raucous and wild behavior and they thrilled with doing it. They picked on co-star Humphrey Bogart (who had also co-starred with them in "Dead End") and Bogey could not control them. Well, Cagney was different. He was a REAL tough guy and he single-handedly whipped the kids into shape by physically taking a tough stance with them (see the film clip below) and once the actors realized what was happening they quickly behaved themselves.

But it was Cagney's acting that won that movie for me. Did he help out his old pal, Pat O'brien, by "turning yellow" so as make the kids ashamed of him, or was that all an act?? In my mind there is only one answer.

Watch Cagney's little actions in this clip..... he was really man-handling the "tough kids".

Don Cardi, ya beat me to it with Man of 1000 Faces!

One of my (many) favorite Cagney films. I first saw it on TV when CBS aired it for the first time in the NYC area sometime around 1968. (Remember The Late Show? The Late Late Show? The Late Late Show II? Award Theater? Heheheheh... I'm showing my age.)

Not very historically accurate, Cagney was way too old for the role, the re-created Lon Chaney makeups bore little resemblance to the originals, the script was pure 1950's soap opera, and yet...

...I still think it's a great film and much of that is because of Cagney.

Two Cagney movies I didn't enjoy are The Gallant Hours and One, Two, Three.

One of his that is overlooked, but which was very good is A Lion in the Streets.
